On November 5, National City City Council gave two polluting busi- nesses less than two years to relocate from Old Town National City. Steve’s Automotive and Jose’s Auto Electric each pose a significant risk and no longer conform to approved land uses in Old Town National City. Together they accrued over 23 code violations in the past eight years. The City Council also considered the location of their operations within 1,000 feet of Kimball Elementary School, where over 400 students attend daily. The newest chapter of the Barrio Logan commu- nity plan update was announced on November 14 as EHC filed a lawsuit against the San Diego Ship Repair Association for misrepresenting the plan with blatant lies to acquire signatures. The community plan was already democrati- cally passed twice by San DIego City Council and since then, signature gatherers have been caught lying to voters on video. Clean air and healthy communities are at risk. A new, polluting power plant named Pio Pico is proposed to be built in southern San Diego. The permit for this power plant will lock in 25 years of heavily toxic air, soaring asthma rates and much higher energy costs for residents. Vanesa is a critical thinker and likes to write, leading her to participate in conferences and give media interviews on the hazards of industrial polluters in her community. “There are companies that generate nothing but garbage, that sell things that stop working quickly so we will buy them again, creating more and more trash and making the com- panies richer and richer,” says Vanessa. “The answer is lack of information, and our best alternative is organizing.” Her mother, Karina Zavala, and brother, Bryan, join Vanesa as members of the border campaign. A partir del mes pasado, vivir en una comunidad libre de tóxicos se convirtió en una realidad más cercana para los habitantes de Old Town National City. El 5 de noviembre, el Cabildo de National City dio a dos empresas contaminantes un plazo de menos de dos años para reubi-carse fuera de Old Town National City. Tanto Steve’s Automotive como Jose’s Auto Electric representan un riesgo importante y ya no cumplen

con los usos de suelo autorizados para Old Town National City. En su conjunto han acumulado más de 23 infracciones al código durante los últimos ocho años. El Cabildo Municipal asimismo consideró la ubicación de sus operaciones, a una distancia menor a 1,000 pies de la primaria Kimball a la cual asisten diariamente más de 400 alumnos. Carolina Martínez, promotora de políticas en EHC, comentó: “queremos empleos y empresas en nuestra comunidad, pero aquellas que contaminan no deben insta-larse junto a escuelas y hogares.” EHC agradece a todos por su apoyo a favor de comunidades libres de tóxicos y nuestro derecho a tener comunidades sanas.

Este pasado 14 de noviembre se anunció el capítulo más reciente de la actualización del plan comunitario de Barrio Logan; al mismo tiempo, EHC entabló una demanda contra la Asociación de Astilleros de San Diego por tergi-versar información acerca del plan mediante fl a-grantes mentiras a fi n de recabar fi rmas. Cabe mencionar que icho Plan ya lo había aprobado democráticamente en dos ocasiones el Cabildo de la Ciudad de San Diego, y desde entonces se ha venido descubriendo a recabadores de fi rmas mintiendo a votantes en video. La sanidad del aire y la salud de nuestras co-munidades están en riesgo. Se propone instalar una nueva y contaminante planta generadora llamada Pio Pico en el sur de San Diego. De otorgarse el permiso a dicha planta, se cimentarían 25 años de aire sumamente tóxico, tasas alarmantes de asma y costos energéticos mucho mayores para los habitantes. Vanesa tiene 17 años. Es miembro del Grupo de Jóvenes hace más de cinco años. Es hija de Karina Zavala y hermana de Bryan, también miembros de la campaña de la frontera. Vanesa ha participado en conferencias y entrevistas ante los medios advirtiendo los peligros por la contaminación de las maquilas en su comunidad. Tiene pensamiento crítico y le gusta escribir: “Hay empresas que solo generan basura, venden cosas que en poco tiempo dejan de servir y volvemos a comprar y así cada vez hay más basura y la empresas cada vez son más ricas”... “La respuesta es la falta de información y nuestra mejor alternativa es la organización.”
