A place to keep facts about characteristics of data that are necessary to clearly describe, inventory, analyze, and classify data
Supports data sharing with cross-system and cross-organization descriptions of common units of data
Assists users of shared data to have common understanding of the meaning, representation, and identification of a unit of data
