Christopher Pyke, Supervisor, Waste Management with respect to Litter Programs;
Adopt-a-Park, Adopt-a-Road
Christopher Pyke, Supervisor, Waste Management, provided an overview of adopt-a-
road and adopt-a-park program which the City of Mississauga is targeting the problem
by changing attitudes and creating “Litter consciousness” through the programs like
“Don’t Be a Litterbug”.
Mr. Pyke advised that local businesses, local service clubs, schools and community
groups to participate in adopting a road or park through a volunteer cleanup program
and choose an area that they wish to adopt by registering their group on the E-City
webpage. The Volunteer Cleanup Program involves a two-year commitment with a
minimum of three clean-ups per year. Mr. Pyke further advised that a special sign will
be erected in the adopted location which will feature the group’s name and a Certificate
of Recognition from the Mayor will be presented to the group upon the completion of the
two-year commitment.
Mr. Pyke recognized that there may be Members of the Environmental Action
Committee involved as part of a community group; however, Mr. Pyke would like to work
with Members of the Environmental Action Committee to adopt an area in the name of
the Committee. Members of the Environmental Action Committee unanimously agreed
to participate in this initiative. Mr. Pyke will work on a proposal for the Committee to
choose an area to adopt and present to the Members of the Environmental Action
Committee.
Mr. Pyke advised of another opportunity that involves the clean-up of highway ramps.
Mr. Pyke advised that there is a Corporate Report going to the Leadership Team

Councillor Jim Tovey with respect to Biosphere Reserve Designation Process
Councillor Jim Tovey provided a brief overview of the Great Lakes restoration initiative,
which was recently cut. The 3 million dollar annual fund that assists with the restoration
of approximately 3,000 Great Lakes projects also financed the Asian Carp Program.
With the funding gone, there is no stopping the Asian Carp entering the Great Lakes.
Councillor Tovey advised that at Great Lakes St. Lawrence Annual meeting in Montreal,
Mayor Crombie put forward a Resolution, which was sponsored by Mayor Dyster,
Niagara Falls, New York, and the Mayor from Montreal. The Resolution spoke to the
support of the designation of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River basin as a United
Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Biosphere
Reserve.
Councillor Tovey is confident that the Canadian Federal government will approve the
designation which means we need to gather a lot of data, such as how many groups are
doing restoration, describe the boundaries, include maps, and agreements; all of which
would be handed over in a package.
Sheila Storey, Sawmill Sid Inc. put forward a Motion regarding the creation of a working
group to compile the data required with respect to the Biosphere Reserve Designation
Process.

Date: 2017/08/17
To: Chair and Members of Environmental Action Committee
From: Christopher Pyke, Supervisor, Waste Management, Environment Division, Community Services Department
Meeting Date: 2017/09/12
Subject: Environmental Action Committee Participation in Adopt-a-Park Program
Recently, the Environment Division (Community Services Department) began the development of
a four-year waste diversion plan that identifies litter as a key priority. The plan will use litter
cleanups as a vehicle to engage community members to feel that they can assist with the
beautification of their respective neighbourhoods.
The Corporate Litter Program called “Don’t be a LitterBug” was designed to help fight the battle
against litter in Mississauga. The City uses the program to target the problem by changing
attitudes and creating “litter consciousness”. To accomplish this goal, it is essential that
Mississauga has strong community support to achieve a cleaner and greener city.
Get Involved
The program encourages the community to gather their family, friends and/or co-workers together
to participate in the City’s adopt a street or park program. The program also asks local
businesses, sports organizations, service clubs, schools, community groups or neighbourhoods to
become “Don’t be a LitterBug” leaders by adopting a street or park through the Volunteer Cleanup
Program.
Making the Commitment
At the July 4, 2017 Committee meeting, the Environmental Action Committee (EAC) was asked to
consider joining the 80+ other adopters by adopting a park or road. It was explained that joining
the other adopters means committing to cleaning up an area that is important to the group, such as
a street that leads to their place of business, a park their children play in, or a road in their
neighbourhood.
The Environmental Action Committee agreed to adopt a park. By keeping this area clean, the
EAC will be promoting a positive image and discouraging litter over the two-year commitment (with
a minimum of three clean-ups per year).
A special sign will be erected in the adopted location featuring EAC's name, and a Certificate of
Recognition from the Mayor will be presented to the group at the completion of the two-year term.

The recommended park for the EAC to adopt is Union Park. The newly opened 1.5-hectare (3.8-
acre) park is located at the northeast corner of Tenth Line West and Aquitaine Avenue in
Mississauga, and functions as a multi-use outdoor space in the community.
This site offers residents a new playground, a shade structure, walking paths, a dog run, two areas
for natural ice rinks, a multi-sport court (including basketball nets), a water feature, adult exercise
stations and a skate park.
Next steps for the EAC:
1. Confirm the location the Committee will adopt (September 12, 2017)
2. Confirm that Christopher Pyke (Supervisor, Waste Management) will act as the Team
Leader for the Committee’s participation in the program (September 12, 2017)
3. The Team Leader will register the group as an adopter with the specified location
4. EAC works together to choose three potential pickup dates for 2018 (September 12, 2017)
5. Committee members mark their calendars to ensure availability for the three pickup dates
6. Group photo to kickoff EAC participation in the program (September 12, 2017) – To be
tweeted with messaging, encouraging community participation
More information on the program can be found at: www.mississauga.ca/litterbug

Subject: Update on Community Green Leaders: Celebrating Environmental Initiatives in Mississauga
Background
On May 7, 2013, the Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) received a report that outlined
options for community recognition. The Committee agreed to move forward with the option to
host an annual celebration and networking event. The inaugural Community Environmental
Appreciation evening was held on June 4, 2014 and has been held as an annual event each
year. Each event has been held in partnership with the Parks and Forestry Division (Community
Services Department) to recognize environmental and forestry initiatives. Attendants include
representatives from community groups, schools, businesses, key City of Mississauga staff, and
Members of Council and EAC.
2017 Event Details
This year’s event, Community Green Leaders: Celebrating Environmental Initiatives in
Mississauga, is scheduled to be held at the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga from 7:00
p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.
This is an invitation-only event that will recognize and thank community Green Leaders across
the city for their environmental and forestry initiatives. A request for initiatives will be sent
through a survey to non-profit organizations, school groups, businesses, and individuals. City
Councillors will also be invited to suggest groups and individuals from within their wards.
Groups/individuals that submit initiatives demonstrating community involvement and
environmental impact, which supports the priorities and actions in the Strategic Plan and/or the
Living Green Master Plan, will receive an invitation to attend.
The evening will feature opening remarks by the Mayor and/or Members of Council, the Chair of
the Environmental Action Committee, a keynote speaker, and networking opportunities.
Groups/individuals will be recognized and will also have the opportunity to display their work at
booths during the event. In support of local youth and food, light refreshments will be prepared
