Environment Test Review
Test Date: Tuesday, April 22
What is the definition of an environment?
All of the living and nonliving things that surround you
What is an ecosystem?
A specified area in our environment containing living and nonliving things
What is the Greenhouse
Effect?
A natural process that warms the Earth by trapping the sun’s heat
Are greenhouse gases good or bad?
A lot of greenhouse gases are a bad thing, but a few of them are good
because they allow for the Greenhouse Effect to happen
What cause Greenhouse Gases
to build up?
Fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas being burned and they
release Carbon Dioxide
What are examples of Greenhouse
Gases?
MethaneCarbon Dioxide
AmmoniaSulfur Dioxide
What is the Ozone Layer?
The thin layer of gases in the stratosphere that is made up of the
ozone gas
What is the chemical symbol
for the Ozone Gas?
O3
Is the Ozone layer man-made or
naturally occurring?
Naturally Occuring
What is the purpose of the Ozone Layer?
The Ozone Layer filters out the harmful UV Rays as they reach our
atmosphere, but let through the warmth and visible light
Could life on Earth exist without the
Ozone layer?
No
Is the Earth getting warmer or colder because of
the increasing amount of
Greenhouse Gas?
The Earth is getting warmer
What is water pollution?
Water being contaminated with harmful substances as a consequence
of human activities.
What are three sources of water
pollution?
1. Factory Dumping2. Oil Spills3. Garbage
4. Fertilizers5. Sewage and waste water
What are two effects of water
pollution?
1. Death of aquatic animals and plants2. Disruptions of food chains
3. Diseases4. Destruction of ecosystems
What is waste?
Anything that we throw away or get rid of that doesn’t get used
What are some things that create
waste?
O PaperO Food scrapsO Yard Waste
O GlassO MetalO Plastic
O ClothingO Wood
O PackagingO Electronics
Where does the garbage we create
go?
Trash is put into a dump or a landfill
What is a landfill?
A place where trash is left in one spot on top of the ground or in deep holes
in the earth, which are filled with trash
Why is plastic such a problem?
On 8% gets recycled and the rest ends up in the garbage and doesn’t
decompose
What is a natural resource?
Resource that come from the earth, but are not always found close to
home
What is a renewable resource?
Resources that will not disappear as we use them
What is an example renewable
resource?
1. Wind2. Solar Energy3. Hydro Energy
What is a nonrenewable
resource?
Resources that cannot replace themselves once they are gone
What is an example of a
nonrenewable resource?
1. Oil/Petroleum (gas, diesel, propane)2. Natural Gas
3. Coal4. Uranium
Why do we need to conserve our
natural resources?
We protect animals and their habitats
We provide a future for generations of people to come
Why does it mean to reduce
something?
To make something smaller or use less of resulting in a smaller amount of
waster
Why does it mean to reuse
something?
We can reuse materials in original form instead of throwing them away
Or
Pass those materials onto someone who can use them
Why does it mean to recycle
something?
Materials can be remade into the same kind of object or into something new
What is a habitat?
The natural home or environment of an animal, plant or organism
Why are we losing habitats?
1. Global warming2. Deforestation
3. Cutting down habitats for farmland4. Water pollution
Why is a food chain?
The order in which organisms or living things depend on one another for food
What is a producer?
Organisms that produce their own food
What is an example producer?
Plants
What is a consumer?
Anything that eats plants and animals
What is are the three types of consumers?
Herbivores
Carnivores
Omnivores
What is an herbivore?
An animal that consumes only plants
What is an omnivore?
An animal that consumes both plants and animals
What is an carnivore?
Consumes only meat
What happens if something in a
food chain disappears?
It causes problems for all of the other animals on the food chain
What is a food web?
A food web is a group of food chains within an ecosystem
