What is Sustainability? Sustainability is an integrated, three-part approach for achieving the goals of environmental preservation, economic prosperity, and social equity for all members of society.WPI is proudly engaged in each of these critical and overlapping areas through our learning, research, service, and administrative operations.WPI actively seeks to foster a community that produces innovative ideas and practical solutions to the complex problems associated with each part of the sustainability puzzle.

****(WPI) has launched an interdisciplinary environmental studies bachelor of arts degree program that provides students with both intensive technological and social policy training. The new major will focus students on working toward solving the complex environmental problems of our time. The program is designed to educate future environmental professionals with the knowledge and skills that will cross boundaries and foster thought leadership in this important area.

*Social SustainabilityWPI is committed to working with its various communities, on and off-campus. From Worcester to Windhoek, Namibia, from Boston to Bangkok, Thailand, through learning and research WPI students and faculty interact with urban and rural communities on sustainability issuesthat cut across the dimensions of environmental protection, economic prosperity and social equity. Through our campus activities, learning, and project center experiences we seek to ensure that all people are afforded justice and have the opportunity to achieve economic, environmental, and social well-being

*Abstract In the past, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) was the cause of environmental disasters in which SO2 emissions soared, causing environmental and physical health problems in the surrounding areas of Mae Moh. Because of such problems, communication of pollution levels became an important objective for EGAT. We accomplished our goals of identifying EGAT's environmental communication strategies and residents' information needs through interviews with EGAT employees and residents of three Mae Moh villages. We conclude the report with communication guidelines for EGAT addressing the main barriers to communication - information accessibility, information comprehensibility, and trust - as well as further recommendations for EGAT regarding increased interaction with villagers.Abstract The goal of this project was to develop a strategy for improving the sustainability of solar home systems in rural Thailand. Heretofore, there has been no long term maintenance plan and many are failing. Communications, attitudes of users and organizations, and funding sources and requirements were researched through interviews with users, government officials, private companies, and experts. We have proposed both short and long term recommendations and developed a prototype web application to improve the overall lifetime of these systems.

**A team of WPI undergraduates recently helped a local school take a major step toward installing what may be the first power-generating wind turbine in Worcester. An Interactive Qualifying Project, completed by, from left, Hans Jensen, Tyler Forbes, Adam Young, and Brian Foley (all members of the Class of 2007) and advised by Alex Emanuel, professor of electrical and computer engineering, helped Holy Name Central Catholic Junior/Senior High School on Vernon Hill in Worcester determine that it could save millions in annual energy costs by installing a 600-kilowatt wind turbine. The project was recently co-winner of first prize in the annual President's IQP Awards*Abstract Our team created a prototype system to monitor compliance with the "Merton Rule," which mandates that buildings produce 10% of their energy from renewable energy sources. We developed and installed the prototype system at a new retail facility and retrieved energy information from a sensor connected to solar panels from a remote computer. We evaluated the use of the prototype system with other forms of renewable energy and analyzed the financial viability of the Merton Rule.**Abstract The settlements in Windhoek, Namibia are plagued by erosion problems resulting from severe rainstorms and inefficient use of rainwater. This project focused on the community of Otjomuise, and how various erosion control measures can be implemented to reverse the effects of erosion and utilize rainwater for productive purposes. Working with community members we constructed several structures that served as replicable demonstrations for residents of Otjomuise and surrounding settlements. By working alongside the community we helped mobilize an effort toward erosion control and prevention and effectively improved the sustainability of future projects

*Abstract Namibia's farmland is currently overrun by invasive bush, which threatens wildlife and cattle. Our project goal was to contribute to the sustainability of a bush-to-electricity industry by designing accommodation trailers to attract and retain workers, as well as by recommending proper land aftercare systems to ensure sustainability of Namibian farmland. We developed several flexible trailer designs to comfortably house rural workers in a variety of fields. We also recommended aftercare systems that allow farmers to significantly increase their land productivity.Abstract The purpose of this report was to assess the potential for the implementation of a Basin Management Approach in the Fish River Basin in Namibia. Using information collected from interviews with local authorities, community representatives and water and sanitation experts, our results provide a detailed overview of the state of water and sanitation in this basin. From these results we developed a list of recommendations that should be considered in the creation of effective and capable basin management

*Abstract In Namibia, over 3800 unelectrified settlements will not receive grid power for 20 years. The Namibian government has proposed the implementation of privately-owned, institutionally-regulated renewable energy businesses to help provide energy services to these areas. The EPOGES toolkit, prepared for the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia, allows an entrepreneur to assess the market in an unelectrified area for the introduction of a renewable energy business. These businesses will provide income generation and accessible energy services to unelectrified communities.

*Purpose The purpose of the Presidents Task Force on Sustainability is to provide leadership and coordination for WPIs campus-wide efforts in energy and resource conservation and reduction in the harmful environmental impacts of our operations, all directed toward enhancing the long-term sustainability of WPIs activities and the environment of which we are a part. We are an educational institution; thus, these goals are interwoven with our academic goals in teaching about the practices of sustainable design and the impacts of behavioral changes, as well as in conducting research in the reduction of environmental impacts and in methods of enhancing sustainability. The task force is drawn from, and works with, all segments of the WPI community: students, faculty, and staff. Further, since WPI is an active member of the local, regional, and world communities, the work of this task force will have impacts beyond the WPI campus

**Materials ManagementPolicy Members of the WPI community are responsible for participating fully in the ongoing efforts to make the University more sustainable by reducing the amount of trash and increasing the percentage of waste that is recycled. Our progress in achieving these goals will be assessed in an annual report released by the President's Task Force on Sustainability. Programs To promote WPI's policy on responsible Materials Management, the University facilitates the recycling and safe disposal of many materials. Annually, about 13% of the waste generated by the Institution is recycled. Efforts are continuously being made to increase the percentage of WPIs waste that is recycled each year

*Climate ProtectionPolicy Global climate change can be attributed primarily to greenhouse gas emissions, which result from the burning of fossil fuels. WPIis committed to better understanding the significant social and environmental impacts of its energy consumption. To become more sustainable, the University seeks to reduce its dependence upon non-renewable energy sources and move towards utilization of renewable sources. Members of the WPIcommunity are responsible for fully participating in efforts to minimize the campus-wide consumption of energy.

*Grounds Services WPI's Grounds Services is working toward providing a safe, attractive, and more sustainable outdoor environment throughout campus. The University will focus on landscaping, litter control, and integrated pest management in order to accomplish these goals and implement the following practices: Collecting litter on a daily basis. Emptying trash and recycling receptacles 2-3 times a week. Undertaking pest management when disease or insects are inflicting noticeable damage on plants or trees. Preventive measures are undertaken on species more susceptible to damage. Minimal use of fertilizers and the incorporation of organic products when possible. Reducing the number of annual plantings in favor of perennial plant material. Performing most weeding by hand and relying on spraying by a licensed applicator in limited instances of herbicide application for weed control. Composting/recycling all landscape debris. Auditing irrigation systems and practices to identify opportunities for water savings

*LEED In February 2007, WPI's Board of Trustees passed a resolution that all new buildings for the university be designed to meet LEED certification. What is LEED? LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Developed by the US Green Building Council, USGBC, LEED addresses all building types, emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies, and promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality. LEED is a practical rating tool for green building design and construction that provides immediate and measurable results for building owners and occupants

*Zipcar WPI and Zipcar, the worlds largest provider of cars on demand by the hour or day, announced a joint partnership to provide Zipcars on campus to university faculty, staff, and students as an environmentally friendly alternative to the costs and hassles of keeping a car on campus. The partnership continues WPIs commitment to invest in sustainable solutions. Two self-service Zipcars, Honda Civic Hybrids, will be available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The cars will be available to all staff and students aged 18+, with gas, maintenance, insurance and reserved parking included in low hourly and daily rates
