Our Environment

This is a forest.

How do forests help us?

These trees were cut down. This is called deforestation.

Why do people do this? What happens with the animals here? What could we do not to hurt the nature?

This is a power station. It produces electricity.

Can you see the smoke? It pollutes the environment. Can you think of other things that pollute the environment?

Factories

planes

cars

The water is also polluted.

Where do you think this water comes from? Why do you think it is dirty?

This is an oil tanker.

Do you know how it can pollute the seas and oceans?

The ground is also polluted by people.

Have you seen this happen? Where? What can we do to stop it?

People dont recycle their rubbish and it takes tens or hundreds of years to decompose.

If we recycle, we can reuse it, so we reduce pollution and the waste of other materials.

What are the consequences of pollution?

What effects does it have on our planet?Deforestation and pollution lead to global warming.

Another consequence is that extreme weather will become more frequent.

Hot temperatures, drought

tornadoes

hurricanes

Heavy snow

Low temperatures

flood

Ice caps are melting.

What kind of problems may appear?

Polar bears are endangered. Because of global warming the ice caps are melting so the bears have to swim longer distances. Some of them cant make it.

The Arctic ice cap (1980 and 2012)- can you see the difference?

The sea levels are rising. Cities on the coast and islands will disappear under water.

Deforestation is the biggest problem. Animals lose their habitat and many species have become endangered and even extinct (dont exist any more).

Why do we need to stop deforestation? Look at this picture and think how forests help us save the environment.

What can we do to help our planet? Here are some small things that may make a difference.Recycle, reduce, reuseTurn off the tap and the light when you dont really need itWalk or ride a bike, instead of using the carUse public transportPlant treesAlways throw the rubbish in the binDont waste paper
