Introduction

As part of the governments strategy to significantlyreduce energy use in buildings, thereby reducingCO2 emissions new Building Regulations havebeen introduced. These regulations require thatbuildings offer more effective methods of energyconservation and efficency. Reducing heat loss isnowa crucial element in the design and buildprocess; offeringa new challenge to both architectsand developers alike. Building elements thatcontribute to the thermal protection of a structuremust offer a ‘thermal value’ (U Value) as specified inthe Building Regulations Guidance Documents,Approved Document L1B and L2B.

After extensive research and development, Envirograf®have launched a unique triple insulation system. TheThe Envir<e>Flex System offers acoustic, fire andthermal protection, making it one of the only 3 in 1

insulation systems available. The Envir<e>FlexSystem has also been designed for ease of use makingit one of the fastest and easiest thermal systems toinstall available. The product is made to size so minimumcutting is required on-site. Building Regulations

ThermalDocument L1A and L1B of the Building Regulationsrequires that the ideal Elemental U-value target forroof living areas should be 0.20 (0.18 Scotland), forpitched roof constructions and 0.25 (0.18 Scotland -0.22 Ireland) for flat roofs.

The process of calculating these final U values isflexible, allowing for trade off with other key insulatingbuilding elements. These calculations are usuallymade by thermal building experts during the designstage of a new build or extended development.

Both Documents L1A and L1B offer recommendedtolerances for individual elements U Values shown inthe Table below:

Thermal performanceEnvir<e>Flex System has been tested at the BDAKEUR Test House in Holland.

The tests included the Envir<e>Flex System in both apitched and flat roof structure. The results are shownin the table below for U Value calculation purposes.

The Envir<e>Flex System fully satisfies therequirements of Documents L1A and L1B. TheEnvir<e>Flex systems can offer effective thermalinsulation solutions that are required by BuildingControl where the tolerances are acceptable on anappropriate building project.

FireDocument B of the Building Regulations states:B2. (1) To inhibit the spread of flame within thebuilding, the internal linings shall:

(a) adequately resist the spread of flame over theirsurfaces; and

(b) have, if ignited, a rate of heat release or a rate offire growth, which is reasonable in thecircumstances.

(2) In this paragraph ‘internal linings’ mean thematerials or products used in lining any partition, wall, ceiling or other internal structure.

Fire performanceThe Envir<e>Flex System comprises a fire resistantinsulation sponge and a fire barrier, tested to BS476:Part 21:1987 offering 1 hour fire resistance.

CondensationDocument C of the Building Regulations requiresstandards of the control of condensation. When usedwith a impermeable underlay the Envir<e>Flex Systemsatisfies the requirements of Document C.

AcousticThe acoustic value is dependent upon the overallstructural design and included elements. The foamelement of the Envir<e>Flex System has been testedin variable constructions and is commonly used forhigh level sound suppression systems in sound studioenvironments.

The Envir<e>FlexSystem allows full

ventilation between theinsulation element and

the outer roofmembrane minimising

condensation risk.

The Envir<e>FlexSystem offersThermal,Acoustic and 1 hourFire Protection -offering a very effectivetriple protection(Thermal, Acoustic andFire) system.
