E X E C U T I V E S UMMA R Y OnOctober19th,2017studentsfromENVI2310:SolidWasteManagementbeganthefirstofafive-stagewasteauditoftheKPULangleyCampus.JanitorialandcafeteriastaffwereinformedpriortoOctober19thtoforgoemptyingwastereceptaclesasusualandinsteadleaveallwasteinplaceforstudentcollection.Insmallteams,studentsemptiedthecontentsofwastereceptaclesoncampusandcollectedfilledgarbagebagswhichwereusedtoestablishalargepileoutsidethecampuscafeteria(Stage1).Asaclass,studentsworkedcooperativelytoopenandsortthroughthecontentsofallgarbagebagscollected,separatingwasteintocategoriesincluding:landfillgarbage,mixedpaper,refundablerecyclables,non-refundablerecyclables,coffeecups,andorganicwaste(Stage2).ENVI2310studentssubsequentlyre-baggedthesortedmaterialsandweighedbagsineachcategory,recordingtheresults(Stage3).Aftertheseinitialstages,ENVI2310studentshostedaninformativeboothintheWestBuildinghallwayonKPULangleycampusaspartofSustainabilityWeektotalktostudentsandfacultyaboutwastemanagementstrategies(Stage4).Finally,studentsworkedtocollectivelycompilethisWasteAuditReporttoshowcasefindingsfromtheWasteAuditconducted.Resultsshowedthatsubstantialamountsoforganicwasteisthrownintolandfill-designatedreceptacles,andthatmanycoffeecupsareusedonadailybasis.TheENVI2310classrecommends,basedonfindings,thatsystematicchangesarerequiredtoreducelandfillwastegeneratedoncampus,suchasreintroducingbiodegradablecoffeecups,mandatingorganicwasteseparationincafeteriafoodpreparation,andmodifyingwastereceptacletypeandavailability.

I N T R O D U C T I O N Duringthe2017fallsemester,theKPUstudentsofENVI2310:SolidWasteManagementconductedawasteaudittodeterminethecompositionandquantityofgarbage,organicmaterials,andrecyclablesdisposedofinasingledayattheKPULangleycampus.TheoverarchingobjectiveoftheAuditwastoconstructaprofileofwasteatKPUandaddressthefollowingquestions:Whatmaterialscomposemostofourwaste?Howcompliantarestudentsandfacultywithseparatingtheirgarbageatwastestations?Howmuchwaste(inkg)isproducedonaverageatKPULangley?
TheWasteAuditwascompletedinfivestages:Stage1,WasteCollection,Stage2,WasteSorting&InitialWeighing,Stage3,SecondaryWeighing,Stage4,ReportCompositionandStage5,SustainabilityWeekOutreach.Stages1through3wereallcompletedonOctober19thbygathering,weighing,andsortingbaggedwastethathadaccumulatedontheKPULangleyCampusoverroughlysixhours(7:00amto1:00pm)onThursday,October19th.
O B J E C T I V E S & S C O P E O F P R O J E C T TheobjectivesoftheWasteAuditwereasfollows:
1. Toquantifytheamount(mass)ofwastegeneratedontheKPULangleyCampusmid-week.
2. Toevaluatewastecontentsanddeterminethemostcommonwastetypesbycategorizingindividualwasteitemsintopre-determinedclasses.
3. TodeterminethequantityofdisposablecoffeecupsthataredepositedintoKPU’swastebinsoverasingleday.
4. TomakewastemanagementrecommendationsforKPUbasedonfindingsproducedbytheWasteAudit,incombinationwith1)previouswasteauditsconductedatKPULangleyand2)successfulwastemanagementstrategiesdemonstratedbycomparableacademicinstitutions.
ThescopeoftheWasteAuditwaslimitedbytimeandresources;howeverdatacanbeextrapolatedtoapplyobservedtrendsincampuswasteproductiontoKPULangleyingeneral.TemporallimitationsweregroundedinENVI2310scheduling;theclassitselfrunsThursdaysfrom1:00pmto4:00pmandthereforeconfinedthedurationoftheWasteAudit.Resourcelimitationsweregroundedinstudentsavailable(ENVI2310includesonly11students),andaccesstowaste(lockedclassroomsorprivateofficeswerenotincluded).Therefore,theWasteAuditrepresentsasnapshotofKPULangley’swasteproductionandefficiencyofcurrentwastemanagementstrategies,andlookedatasix-hourwasteaccumulationoncampus(7:00amto1:00pm)onanarbitraryThursdayinOctober.

TheWasteAuditwasconductedunderalimitedscopeusingseveralstandards.First,theWasteAuditwasconductedmidweek,mid-semesterduringtheFall2017semester.ByconductingtheAuditduringtheschoolweek,theweekendinfluencewasreduced(whichmayhaveledtoreducedwasteproducedifstudentstookFridayorMondayoff,particularlyifeitherendoftheschoolweekwasaholiday).ByconductingtheAuditmid-semester,thevariablesstemmingfromtheinfluxofnewstudentsorstudentsdroppingoutwaseliminated,if,bymid-October,thereisconsistencyinweeklyschoolattendancebystudents.Second,theWasteAuditwasnotconductedafteranusualeventoranomaly(suchasafestival,farmer’smarket,orclassparty),whichmayhaveinflatedwastecollected.Third,theWasteAuditlookedatroughlysixhoursworthofaccumulatedwaste,from7:00am(whenKPULangleyopens)to1:00pm(whentheWasteAuditbegan).
S T A G E 1 : W A S T E C O L L E C T I O N OnOctober19th,2017ENVI2310studentsconductedtheWasteAudit.Studentswereinitiallydividedintofivegroupsandassignedtospecificareasofthecampustocollectgarbage(seeTable2.0below).PaulRichard,ENVI2310instructor,communicatedwithKPULangleyjanitorsandcafeteriastafftoseethatwastereceptaclesandsortingstationswerenotemptiedthroughoutthedayonOctober19th.Table2.0:WasteAuditAssignmentsCampusArea,WasteCollected NumberofStudentsAssignedWomen’sWashrooms 2Men’sWashrooms 2Cafeteria&EastBuilding 3South(Nursing)Building 2WestBuilding 2Twofemalestudentswereassignedthefemalewashroomsaroundthecampusandtwomalestudentswereassignedthemalewashrooms.ThesetwogroupscommunicatedduringStage1anddecidedamongstthemselveswhichgroupwouldcollectfromgender-neutralorhandicappedwashrooms.TwostudentswereassignedtheSouthBuilding,twoassignedtotheWestBuilding,andtheremainingthreeassignedtoboththecafeteriaandeastbuilding.MaterialsusedbygroupsduringStage1included:

Thecollectiontookapproximately1.5hourstocomplete.Eachgroupwasgivenafloorplanoftheareaofthecampusthattheywereassignedto.Eachgroupwentaroundemptyingoutallthebins;thisincludedwastebins,recyclingbins,organicbins,bottlebins,andcanbins.Thebinswerethenreplacedwithnewbags.Aftertakingoutthegarbagebags,eachtiedbagwastaggedwiththenameorareaofthebuilding,thefloorandthetypeofgarbage.Ifgarbagewasobtainedfromaclassroomoroffice,thentheclassroomortheofficenumberwaswrittendownaswell.Ifa
classroomorofficewerenotabletobeaccessedatthetime,itwasrecordedonthefloorplan.

Asafetyconcernduringtheauditwascomingacrosssharpobjectswhilegoingthroughthegarbage.Studentsmadesurethat,whengoingthroughthewaste,thegarbagebagsweredumpedoutonthetarpandthenwerecarefullysegregated.Tongswereprovidedsothatifstudentsfeltunsafehandlingthegarbage,thetongscouldbeusedtopickandsort.Toassuretheareawedidthesortinginwaskeptcleanandsafeafterwards,weusedatarpsothatiftherewereanyspillsoranymessitwasallonthetarp.Attheendthetarpwasdisposedofaswellasallthegarbagebags.Theclassworkedasateamsothattheworkloadwasdistributedouteventuallyresultinginasafe,fairandsteadyworkenvironment.Therewerenosafetyissuesreportedduringthisaudit.MaterialsusedbyENVI2310duringStage2included:

considered.

D I S C U S S I O N ResultsfromtheWasteAuditdemonstratedcompliancebypeopleonKPULangleycampuswhodiscardofwastematerials,asreceptacleswereshowntocontainlargelytheirintendedmaterials.ENVI2310speculatesthatwastereceptacleavailability,design,andsystematicwastemanagementflawsbringaboutthegenerationofanexcessiveamountofsolidwasteoncampus.RecommendationsforimprovingwastemanagementatKPULangleyaredetailedinthesubsequentsection(Recommendations).
R E C OMM E N D A T I O N S ThefollowingrecommendationshavebeendevelopedfromtheWasteAudit,addressingbothsystematicchangesandmodificationstoavailablefuture-wastematerials.
S Y S T E M A T I C C H A N G E S Implementingtop-downchangestotheKPUsolidwastemanagementstrategyislikelytorenderthemostnoticeableresultsandgeneratethelargestimpact.Modifyingthewastemanagementsystemitselfandaddressingprocessesthatareinsufficientlycurbingwastegeneratedoncampus(asevidentbythisWasteAudit),willlikelyreshapehowwasteisviewedbystudents,staff,andfaculty.
I N C R E A S I N G W A S T E S T A T I O N S Thereisanurgentneedtoprovideadditionalwaste-separatingstationsoncampus,toprovidepeoplewiththeopportunitytoseparatetheirwaste.AsofNovember2017,thereareonlytwoadequatestationsonLangleycampusthatofferareceptaclefororganicmaterials.Unfortunately,bothwastestationsarelocatedonlyonthefirstfloorofcampus,andonlyintheWestandEastbuildings.ThisdoesnotmeettheneedsofKPULangleystudents.Whiletherearemultiplethree-binreceptaclesthatallowseparationoflandfillwaste,paper,andallrecyclableslocatedthroughouttheschool,thesepseudo-stationsareinsufficientastheystillonlyprovidelimitedwasteseparatingstreamsanddonotincludeanorganicsreceptacle.ItisrecommendedthateachKPULangleybuilding(East,West,Nursing,Brewery,ISH,Horticulture,etc.)beprovidedwithatminimumonewaste-separatingstationperfloor. M O D I F Y I N G W A S T E S T A T I O N S Inadditiontoinstallingmorewaste-separatingstations,itisrecommendedthattheybeupdatedtodiscouragelandfillwaste.Currently,thelandfillbinandorganicsbinatthestationsareofsimilarsizeandcapacity.Toreducelandfillwasteandencourageseparationofwaste,itisrecommendedthelandfillbinbeconsiderablysmallerthantheorganicsbintopromotesustainabledisposal.

R E D U C I N G S I N G L E - W A S T E R E C E P T A C L E S Currently,therearemanysingle-wastereceptacleslocatedthroughoutcampus,includingtraditionalsmall,metalgarbagecansortallerplasticswing-doorbins.Thesebinsaredistributedinclassrooms,privateoffices,orhallways,andpromotesingle-streamwastedisposal.Fromthiswasteaudit,itisspeculatedthatlesssingle-wastereceptacleswouldencourageindividualstovisitwastesortingstationsintheschoolinsteadandthusproperlyseparatetheirwaste.Byreducingtheavailabilityofgarbagebins,peopleatKPULangleycampuswillbeforcedtodepositsolidwasteintoappropriatestreams.
C A F E T E R I A W A S T E S E P A R A T I O N TheKPULangleycafeteriadoesnotcurrentlyseparatetheirorganicwaste,andyetgeneratesasubstantialmassoffoodwasteeachday,presumedtoresultdirectlyfromfoodpreparation.Thecafeteriacandivertlargeamountsoflandfillwasteintoorganicsbinsandshouldbeheldaccountableforthefoodwastetheydisposeofeachday. H A N D D R Y E R S Papertowelsaccountedfor15%ofthewasteinthisaudit.Thebestwaytoreducethatwastewouldbetoinstallhanddryers.AccordingtoRestroomDirect(RestroomDirect,2017),handdryersaremuchcheapertooperatethanusingpapertowels:0.02-0.18centsperdrywhereaspapertowelsarearound1centpersheet.Atsomepointthecostoftheinstallationofthehanddryerswouldbenullifiedbytheamountthatisbeingsavedinsteadofusingpapertowels.

D I S P E N S E R S I N S T E A D O F D I S P O S A B L E P A C K E T S AchoiceSodexorecentlymadewaschangingfromketchupdispenserstoindividualketchuppackets.ItisrecommendedthatSodexochangebacktoketchupdispensers.Thiswouldeliminatethewastemadebytheketchuppackets(thepapercupsusedwiththedispenserscanbeputintotheorganicsbin). C O F F E E C U P S Thelargestamountofwasteproducedbyonethingwas,likepreviousyears,coffeecups.In2016,uponrecommendation,SodexoswitchedtoprovidingcompostablecupstotheKPULangleycafeteria.However,atthestartofthefollowingFallSemester2017,theyrevertedbacktoprovidingnon-compostablecupsafterreceivingcomplaintsthatthecoffeedidnottasteasgood.SpeakingwithSodexostaffattheLangleyCampus,theyinformedusswitchingcoffeebrandsmeantpurchasingtheStarbucksbrandofdisposablecupsaspartofacombinationdeal.ThechoicewasbetweenStarbuckscoffeeorcompostablecups.TheenddecisionwastogobacktoStarbucks.

AdiscountisgivenforusingareusablemugatSodexo,Grassroots,andTimHortons:$0.25,$0.15and$0.12respectively(Zaida,S.,2014).Onerecommendationistoadvertisethatmore,perhapsputupasignbythecafeteria.Anotherrecommendationistoraisethatrefundslightly,maybeto10%offthecoffee.Thiswouldmotivatepeoplemoretoreducethewasteofdisposablecoffeecupsiftheycouldsavemoney.Sodexocouldalsoswitchbacktothecompostablecups,tominimizethewastegoingtothelandfill. C O M P O S T TheauditrevealedthatthelargestcontributortowasteatKPUisorganicsandfoodwaste.TheLangleycampushasonsitecompostingforfoodandplantwastethatisusedinlandscapingandgardening.Currently,onlytheSchoolofHorticultureFieldLabsandthegreenhouses,andSodexoasneeded,composttheirwaste(Zaida,S.,2014).UFVhasafewcompostbinsaroundcampusinareassuchasthecafeteriawheretheyaremostuseful(UFV,n.d.).Havingcompostbinsinareaswherepeopleconsumefoodwouldreducetheamountoforganicwastegoingtothelandfill.ConsideringorganicsandfoodwasteisthelargestcontributortowasteatKPU,separatingfoodwastefromorganicsandhavingmorecompostbinswouldbebeneficialforKPUasthecompostproducedcouldbeusedforlandscapingandtherewouldbeareducedcostofgreenwastepickup.
E D U C A T I O N EducationplaysoneofthemostimportantrolesinreducingwasteatKwantlensincewithouttheparticipationofallKPUmembers,alleffortgoestowaste. Outofthe3organicsbins,2ofthemwerecontaminatedwithotherkindsofwaste.Studentsandfacultyneedtolearnhowtoproperlyusebinstoremedythisissueandothercross-contamination.EducatingallmembersofKPUthroughSustainabilityWeekposters,articlesintheKPUmagazine"TheRunner"andactivitiesthroughtheS.A.F.E.club(StudentsActivefortheEnvironment)atKwantlenwouldincreaseawarenessofsustainabilityissuesandproperusageofbins.Also,atthebeginningofeachsemester,ane-mailcouldbesenttoallstudents,staffandfacultyabouthowtoproperlyusetherecycling,garbage,andcompostbinstoeitherteachand/orremindproperuse.Thisemailcouldbesentintheformofaposterorpdffileforeasyviewing,anditcouldalsobepartofaprojectforanEPTstudent. SomethingthatUFVistryingistheirprogram"Bin-be-Gone",wheretherearelessgarbagecansaroundtheuniversityandmorerecyclingstations(UFV,2017).Therationalebehindthisisitisnoweasiertorecyclethantojustthrowsomethinginthegarbage,sorecyclingisnowthemoreconvenientoption.Withtheeasyoptionofjustblindlythrowingthingsinthegarbagegone,studentsareforcedtopaymoreattentionandsorttheirwasteintotheappropriaterecyclingcontainer.

C : W A S T E M A N A G E M E N T : O T H E R I N S T I T U T I O N S ThethemesthatemergedfromotherinstitutionsareverysimilartowhatKwantlenPolytechnicUniversityisdoingwithwastemanagement.ThefirstthemethatemergedwerethetypeofwastebinsintheinstitutionsofMcGillUniversity(McGill,2017),UniversityofVictoria(UVIC,2017),UFV(UFV,2017),UBCO(UBCO,2017)andDouglasCollege(DouglasCollege,2017).LikeKwantlen,eachoftheseintuitionshaveawastesystemsetupwherethereisaseparatebinforthetypeofwastebeingthrownout.Forexample,therewillbeadifferentbinforgarbage,recyclables,paper,andbottles.Thesebinsaresetupinthiswayinthehopesofhavingstudentsthrowouttheirwasteaccordingly.AnotherthemeisthecompostingsystemoncampuswhichUFVandKPUhaveincommon.Thecampusesturnperishablesintosoilthatcanbeusedforgardeningandlandscapingpurposesonthecampus.Insteadofdiscardingthefoodandplantwaste,thesecampusesaremakinggreatuseofitbycreatingitintosoilfortheon-campususe.AthirdthemerelatabletoKPUthatemergedwerethewaterstationssetuparoundthecampuses.Thesewaterstationsallowstudentstorefilltheirownbottlesandthispromotesthereductionofplasticwasteasstudentswillnotbepurchasingnewwaterbottles.ThecampusesthatsharethisstrategywithKPUareMcGillUniversityandUVIC.

D : S H O R E L I N E C L E A N U P D A T A OnSeptember21,2017,ENVI2310conductedagarbageandlitterpickupaspartoftheGreatCanadianShorelineCleanupinitiative(GreatCanadianShorelineCleanup,2017).TheclasswalkedalongLoganCreekontheKPULangleycampusfromroughly1:00pmto2:30pminsmallgroupswithgarbagebags,tongs,andplasticgloves.Groupscollectedlitter,debris,andgarbagefound,anddepositedfullgarbagebagsintothecampusdumpsterbins.Keepingsafetyinmind,studentsusedtheirowndiscretionwhenpickingupsharps,biohazardouswastes,heavyitems,oritemsoutsidesafeareas.ThelengthoftheLoganCreekreachcleanedupwasroughly500meters,andstretchedfromGloverRoadtotheLangleyBypass.Atotalof1,163itemswerecollected,averagingapproximately2.3itemscollectedpermeter.ConnorSheepwash,ENVI2310student,wastheeventorganizerandclassrepresentativefortheinitiative.Table13.0.GreatCanadianShorelineCleanupRawData,KPULangley,September21st,2017
