Savannas and Tropical Seasonal Forests

Savannas & Tropical Seasonal Forests •  Savanna = Tropical biome dominated by

grasses, shrubs, and small trees

12/4/15&

10&

Savannas & Tropical Seasonal Forests •  Tropical seasonal forests = larger growths of

trees than savannas and fewer fires

Climate •  Savannas and seasonal forests have a short wet

season and a long dry season •  Wet Season = Only growth period for plants.

12/4/15&

11&

Animal Adaptations •  Savanna wildlife include many antelopes,

giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, lions, and hyenas

Animal Adaptations •  Some animals, such as elephants, are

migratory – they move to follow rain patterns •  Some animals give birth during the wet

season for food availability

12/4/15&

12&

Animal Adaptations • Animals feed on different levels of

vegetation – Ex/ Giraffes feed on high leaves, while gazelles

feed on grasses

Plant Adaptations • During the dry season, plants drop their

leaves or die back • When the rain returns, growth begins again

12/4/15&

13&

Plant Adaptations •  Some grasses have vertical leaves to reduce

sun exposure and drying out •  Trees and shrubs have thorns or sharp leaves

to deter herbivores

Temperate Grasslands

12/4/15&

14&

Temperate Grasslands •  Temperate grasslands = often located mid-

continent (ex/ North American plains) • Dominated by grasses

Temperate Grasslands • Slow decomposition results in extremely

fertile soil (nutrients accumulate in soil)

12/4/15&

15&

Climate • Hot summers and cold winters •  Seasonal droughts, occasional fires, and

animal grazing prevent shrubs and trees from becoming established

Plant Adaptations • Many plant seeds are fire-resistant or fire-

germinated •  Long roots help plants survive droughts and

fires

12/4/15&

16&

Animal Adaptations • Grazing animals, such as bison, have large,

flat back teeth for chewing vegetation • Animals, such as prairie dogs, live

underground for protection against weather and predators

Threats • Due to their fertile soil, many grasslands have

been turned into farmland • Overgrazing by cattle • Soil erosion caused by grain crops

12/4/15&

17&

Pair-Share-Respond 1.  What kind of plant life would you find in the

savannas and tropical seasonal forests? 2.  What kind of animals live in the savannas? 3.  Describe a plant or animal adaptation for

the savannas 4.  How are plants adapted to grassland

biomes? 5.  Identify one way grassland biomes are

threatened
