percent in the 31st District! Unbelievably, the state Supreme Court overturned the law.

This year the Senate voted on my mea-sure, SJR 8213, to put the two-thirds tax-vote rule in our state Constitution. If leg-islators had voted as their constituents did on I-1185, the measure would have passed easily and appeared on the November 2014 ballot. Unfortunately, needed Democrats would not support the will of their own constituencies so you will not get to vote on this. I will continue working to put this taxpayer protection on the ballot for the people’s approval.

Providing for K-12 schools: Of the operating-budget adjustments our Senate majority approved, about three-fourths would have benefited K-12 education. Unfortunately, the House wouldn’t sup-port that. Still, the final budget puts about two-thirds of the additional spending into our schools.

My bill (SB 6424), to create a Washington

State Seal of Biliteracy for high-school grad-uates who become proficient in a language besides English, passed the Legislature. I believe all students deserve an opportunity to learn another language and be recog-nized for their effort. They must compete and succeed in a global economy. We need to enhance language instruction.

College tuition “freeze” will continue: The Senate budget I supported continues the freeze on in-state tuition rates. This is the first time since 1980 that tuition rates have held steady for two years.

Sadly, the House and the governor were willing to let tuition increase again for 2014-15. That’s like another tax hike on our families. Fortunately, our Senate majority’s position prevailed yet again.

As co-chair of the Joint Committee on Veterans’ and Military Affairs, I’m also pleased that we ended the one-year waiting period for veterans to qualify for in-state tuition rates. I sponsored this change in 2013 and the Senate passed it unanimously. Unbelievably, the House wouldn’t vote on it. That embarrassment wasn’t repeated this year, so this bill will become law.

Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. At the famous race venue, they will get a behind-the-scenes look at Kahne’s race-day environ-ment.

Kahne’s connection to the insurance giant is a pro-fessional one. He drives the No. 5 Farmers Insurance Group/Quaker State Chevrolet SS for Hendrick Motorsports in the Sprint Cup Series.

Also during Thursday’s visit to Southwood, Farmers Insurance and the

Kasey Kahne Foundation announced matching dona-tions to the school that will create a “reading garden,” a manicured spot on school grounds where students will be able to sit quietly and read.

Farmers Insurance launched the “Thank a Million Teachers” pro-gram at the start of 2014 and, as of last week, had recognized nearly 300,000 educators throughout the nation.

Enumclaw native Joe Callero was riding high last week as coach of the Cal Poly Mustangs, one of just 64 basketball teams locked into the NCAA’s Big Dance.

For Callero and his troops, the experience was brand new. Some esteemed programs are regulars in the postseason tourney that eventually declares a national champion, but Cal Poly was treading on new ground – never before had the small school from the Big West Conference quali-fied for the elite field of 64.

Playing a First Four con-test against fellow No. 16 seed Texas Southern, the Mustangs dialed up an 81-69 victory to guarantee themselves a berth in the show. The reward for a 16 seed is a matchup with a No. 1 seed and Callero’s crew

drew one of the best. Cal P o l y ’ s re m a rk-able late-s e a s o n show ing conclud-ed Friday with a 64-37 loss to unde-feated Wichita State, con-sidered among the favorites to claim the national title.

Callero, who took over the Cal Poly program in April 2009, has traveled a lot of basketball miles to find himself in the national spotlight as coach of one of the tournament’s true long-shots.

He grew up in Enumclaw, the eighth of 16 chil-dren, and graduated from Enumclaw High. He fin-ished his playing days as a point guard at Central

The Enumclaw High girls tennis team has been one of the most winning programs over the past few years for both sports and academ-ics, and this year should be continue the trend.

Coach Rick Carel said although the team lost four players to graduation, four talented younger girls will fill the roles.

Carel said one of the secrets of the team’s suc-cess is many of the girls, play other sports. “They

are all-around athletes that develop into good tennis players,” he said.

Through the past two seasons the Hornets have been undefeated in South Puget Sound League play, going 26-0; the team continued the streak by winning at home Friday against Decatur.

A few of the returning players include sopho-more Mariah Bone and senior Jordan Koontz.

Carel said returning players Barbara Becker and Kylee Almy also will be on the court for the Hornets.

Some of Carel’s promising younger players include Kylie Rademacher, Olivia Adams, Bailey Malneritch and Camille Sorenson.

Against Decatur, No. 1 singles player Bone and No. 2 singles Koontz rolled to easy victories, each winning 6-0.

In the doubles matches, No. 1 Almy and Anna Musick won 6-3, 6-0. The No. 2 team of Adams and Rademacher won 6-0, 6-3 and No. 3 Malneritch and Sorenson won 6-0, 6-1.

Councilman wrong, the mayor captains the ship

I am writing in response to the recent events regarding the Enumclaw City Council as reported in The Courier-Herald. Since I was not present at the meeting in ques-tion, my assessment of the situation can only be based on the informa-tion provided by your newspaper.

Controversy will always arouse interest from the public, especially when it is on the front page of one’s local newspaper. I was not surprised that the issue of a Code of Conduct was suggested as a guideline for the City Council meetings.

Frequently a “Code of Conduct” is initiated by individuals whose agen-da is not to promote cooperation within a group, rather it is initiated to silence individuals who choose to disagree with them, as in this case. The concerns expressed by Mayor Reynolds and City Attorney Mike Reynolds are legitimate and on tar-

get, therefore councilmen Dickson and Overland could only counter with the “manner” in which their concerns were expressed.

Mr. Dickson and Mr. Overland pointed at Mayor Reynolds and Mr. Reynolds’ emotional response to draw attention away from the truth of the issue.

As a person who grew up in Chicago, I have been socialized to heated arguments amongst city lead-ers. It does not faze me. The bot-tom line amongst this smoke and mirrors, taking away emotion and affect, is that Darrel Dickson is in the wrong.

Mr. Dickson needs to remember that he is the member of a “team.” There is no “I” in team. There is a pecking order in any leadership arena, whether it is political lead-ership, the medical profession or even a kid’s soccer team. Mayor Liz Reynolds is the head of the team. She is the CEO of our communi-ty, the “captain of the ship.” City Attorney Mike Reynolds is her legal consultant on matters pertaining to the community. The City Council is our executive management team, of

which he is a member.Mr. Dickson had no business going

to any agency, whether as a represen-tative of himself or of the communi-ty without full disclosure to and per-mission from Mayor Reynolds, City Attorney Mike Reynolds, the rest of the members of the City Council and the citizens of Enumclaw.

I am personally concerned that there has become too much frac-tionation and splitting with our City Council and community since Mr. Dickson became a member. I see certain City Council members align with Mr. Dickson because they do not really know and understand the issues and are unable to think inde-pendently. That is never good for a community.

Mr. Dickson knows what he did was wrong and he needs to apologize to Mayor Reynolds, City Attorney Mike Reynolds and the rest of the City Council for under-mining their authority, but mostly he needs to apologize to the people of Enumclaw for stepping out of his boundaries.

Mary L. Ballard, M.D.Enumclaw

I recently rediscovered my favorite TV show, “One Tree Hill,” and started watching the entire series.

When I sit and think of the Seattle Seahawks champion season, a line from the show comes to mind.

“Every song ends, is that any reason not to enjoy the music?”

The same can be applied to the Hawks. The Hawks are NFL champions; they set out to go all

the way and they accomplished their goal. The city, almost

two months later, is still buzzing about that win. Blue and green can still be seen all around town and that isn’t going to change any time soon.

The Hawks have something good

going. I think they have more to accomplish and have the drive to do so.

But there will be a lot of changes made to the team.So far, the Seahawks have resigned defensive lineman

Michael Bennett, tight end Anthony McCoy, defensive tackle Tony McDaniel, quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and kicker Steven Hauschka. The Hawks have also added wide receiver Taylor Price to the roster.

But the Hawks have made some changes that fans may not appreciate as much.

They have let go of defensive linemen Chris Clemons and Red Bryant.

Others to say goodbye include wide receiver Golden Tate, right tackle Breno Giacomini, defensive tackle Clinton McDonald, cornerback Walter Thurmond and cornerback Brandon Browner.

All have signed with other teams. For as long as I can remember, fans have hated it when

players leave for more money. But why should we stop them from going or be mad that they did and act like poor sports when they return on an opposing team?

A lot of players say they will never leave for more money and most of the times they do just that. But can we blame them?

Playing professional sports is a business. When they leave, it isn’t because they don’t like it here. It is because they have been offered a raise somewhere else.

The Seahawks are evolving and changing and we should let them. Coach Pete Carroll and General Manager John Schneider, along with the rest of the Seahawks organiza-tion, did a great job putting together the 2014 Super Bowl champion team, so why not let them work their magic again and put together an even better team for next sea-son.

The Seahawks proved it isn’t impossible to win a Super Bowl if you put your all into it and who is to stay they won’t be able to do it again.

Like our great quarterback Russell Wilson says, “Why not us?”

A funny thing happened to me on my way to an oil change.

I recently had the oil changed in my wife’s 2004 Toyota Tacoma at a local repair shop and was told by the mechanic that the fuel filter and spark plugs were badly in need of replacement. I knew enough to know that changing the fuel filter, once an easy job, was no longer simple, so I told the mechanic go to ahead and change it. It turned out he had to replace the filter going through the wheel well. So I made a good deci-sion.

When it came to the spark plugs, I figured it was a cinch for me to do it by myself. After all, I’d changed

the plugs on my vehicles since I was in my 20s. I popped the hood to the truck and saw the spark plugs on the side of the four cylinders, where they had been on my previous 1978 Toyota pickup. There was a long metal bar that was screwed on over the top of them so I figured out how

to remove it. What I found was that, instead of spark plugs, I had discon-nected the fuel injection jets. When I tried to put everything back the way it was I found I was unable to do so.

Not knowing what to do but real-izing that I would probably only make matters worse if I continued, I swallowed my pride and called the repair shop, asking for advice and help. Since I live in town they came out and told me what I had done. The mechanic couldn’t re-screw the bolts because I had cross-threaded the bolt hole. I’d have to have the truck towed out of my garage and hauled

Let’s face it: something is seriously wrong with the U.S. economy. I’m speaking not of the remnants of the recession, but of the structure of our society; that is, the middle class is rapidly shrinking, the lower class is growing and the gap between the wealthy and everyone else continues to increase at an alarming rate.

What the hell’s going on?Well, I’m not an economist and

I don’t pretend to understand the world’s financial markets or the Wall Street circus. Nonetheless, there are certain tenets of economic history and conditions that I can clearly grasp. For instance, America was built on cheap labor – namely, immi-

grants and slaves – and, by 1885, two financial classes were firmly estab-lished: there was a millionaire class (Rockefeller and Carnegie) and a second laboring class for everyone else. What middle class may have existed was more or less insignifi-cant. This really didn’t change until

organized labor started throwing its weight around. As the bumper sticker says: “Unions brought you the middle class.”

Today many unions are broken. It’s cheaper and viable for corpora-tions to move production to Asia or to “right to work” states, as Boeing machinists have recently discovered. Then too, in the last 50 years, union membership has dropped from 35 percent of the workforce to 8 percent. Furthermore, on assembly lines it’s often cheaper to build robots than to hire workers. Many good-pay-ing, middle-class jobs simply don’t

Cedar River Academy students will present their winter term projects to par-ents and the public dur-ing the school’s Knowledge Fair on March 27.

The public is invited to join the celebration during an open house that begins at 1 p.m. and continues through the Knowledge Fair that runs from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Visitors may examine student displays, interview students, meet parents of Cedar River Academy students, tour school facilities and meet CRA educators.

“Cedar River Academy applies its Student-Centered Education Model to transfer learning respon-sibility from teachers to students”, said Kristin McSwan, Cedar River Academy Head of School. “Our students develop

subject matter skills and then apply them to proj-ects that interest them. This research, build, document, and present cycle assures the student has a high inter-est level and deep concep-tual subject matter under-standing.”

CRA students complete a number of projects during each of three terms dur-ing an academic year. Near the end of each term, stu-dents prepare presentations and demonstrations of their favorite project. End-of-term Knowledge Fairs enable students to publicly demonstrate their subject matter understanding and knowledge.

At the March 27th open house, Cedar River Academy will introduce its Life-Prep High School program designed to sup-port students as they meet

Washington state gradua-tion requirements, research and sample career options based on individual inter-ests and abilities while developing a career readi-ness plan, and develop life skills and knowledge required for success in the 21st century. Life-Prep High will blend online learning, research- and project-based learning activities support-

ed by CRA certified teach-ers, and field studies and internships.

Cedar River Academy is a non-sectarian private school offering learning programs for pre-kinder-garten through 12th grade students.

Members of the Enumclaw Rotary Club recognized two students as Students of The Month during their March 20 meeting.

Nate Flood, son of Reeva and Dan Flood of Enumclaw, was the recipi-ent from Enumclaw High School. A strong academic student taking Advanced Placement classes, he has a 3.93 grade-point average, is a member of the National Honor Society and is currently the student repre-sentative for Young Life. He plans on attending the University of Washington this fall and, while a field of study is undecided, his interests include math and science.

Caroline Siewert, daughter of Shelley and Rob Rothbauer of Buckley, was the recipient from White River High School. Taking advanced placement classes, she has a 3.98 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is the varsity cheer captain and volunteers time at both a preschool and Heritage House. She plans to attend Washington State University to pur-sue a degree in special and elementary education.

Members of the state Legislature passed bills on three of the State Board of Education’s 2014 legisla-tive priorities prior to their March 13 adjournment:

• authorization of a 24-credit career and college ready graduation require-ment framework,

• expansion of math and science course equivalen-cies for vocational pro-grams, and

• extended learning opportunities to combat summer learning loss.

SB 6552 authorizes the 24-credit graduation requirement framework developed by the SBE, pro-vides flexibility to school districts in meeting the instructional hour require-ment and expands math and science course equiv-alencies for Career and Technical Education pro-grams.

“The career and col-lege ready diploma is a big win for kids,” said Board Chair Dr. Kristina Mayer. “Establishing a meaning-ful high school diploma

that prepares students for their next step in life, whatever that might be, has been a top priority for the board for nearly a decade.”

This bill embraces a mul-tiple pathway approach providing more student choice in math and science course-taking decisions, seven combined credits of electives and Personalized Pathway Requirements that allow students to explore or focus on a range of fields of knowledge that interest them, and increased oppor-tunities to earn course equivalency credits in CTE courses.

While the framework increases the credits need-ed to graduate from 20 to 24, SB 6552 also makes the culminating project volun-tary, somewhat offsetting the change.

Finally, the bill directs the Office of the Education Ombuds to convene a task force to review barriers to the 24-credit diploma for students with special needs.

Louis A. Braun died on March 12, 2014 from a sudden illness. He was born March 2, 1935 in Peru, IL to Albert and Eva Kathryn (Frederick) Braun, graduating from LaSalle-Peru High School in 1953. While attending the University of Illinois in Champaign, he met his future wife, Barbara Fraser Jennings, on May 25, 1956. They were married on December 22, 1956 in Evanston, IL and so began a beautiful 57-year marriage. After graduating from the School of Engineering in December, 1959, Lou began a 25-year career with the Federal Government. This career led Lou and his family from Illinois to Washington DC followed by Dugway and Salt Lake City UT, Placerville CA, Romney WV, and nally to Enumclaw WA in the summer of 1976. Lou enjoyed the out of doors, be it shing, camping, or working in the yard. One of his favorite events was the family’s annual Trailwatcher’s Picnic, where his catch of the season would be featured. He and Barbara developed a love for ice skating and would travel to skating events. These travels took them to France, Switzerland, Canada, and multiple locations in the US. Upon retiring, Lou was always learning and puttering around. He read, took writing classes, learned to bake pies, and did what he liked best, shing whenever and wherever they were biting. He valued education at all ages and instilled that in his family. While Lou was the 1st college graduate in his family, he provided the support and guidance that enabled his children and grandchildren to pursue and obtain a college education. Lou is survived by his wife Barbara, two daughters: Cathie (Scott) Jamieson, Lisa Shafer; seven grandchildren: Courtney (Brent) Lemer, Jahna Wong; Justin, Steven, and Kristen Jamieson; Jennifer and Daniel Shafer; and two great-grandsons, Kolt and Klay Lemer. His family and friends will miss his subtle guidance and support, green eyes, smile, and pies. But more importantly, Lou’s quiet, unconditional love and generosity will be forever in the hearts of his family and those whose lives were touched by Lou.

A couple weeks ago, while sitting in church listening to an incredible sermon, I took a moment to sit back and close my eyes. The guest speaker was Pastor Brian Houston from Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia, and his message was alive! I was definitely not falling asleep. He was speaking to pastors and leaders that morning and he invited us to close our eyes and visualize the “church we saw with our eyes closed.”

With the launch of our church, Grace Point NW, quickly approaching I was eager to see if God would add clarity to the vision for the church we planned to help build on the Enumclaw Plateau. So I prayed, sat back and closed my eyes. What I saw was more than remark-able. Though I strained and squinted to see a church, when I closed my eyes I saw

a city. I thought I’d share with you not only what I saw, but what I see.

I see a city satu-rated and running over with the love of God! The love that f lows every-where throughout this city is tangible. It has its own feel and fra-grance. In this city every-thing is steeped in love. As I peer around there is no judgment or pride, no guilt or shame and no records of wrong. The love is so per-vasive that everything and everyone is made perfect and beautiful. Love’s full glory and purpose revealed as a river in the heart of a city.

I see a city with truth as the only foundation. Nothing can shake this city. Everything built here will stand forever and those

who live in the many dwell-ings are safe and at peace.

I see a city where music and worship fill the streets. There is laughter and free-dom and victory is the per-petual theme. I literally see a party…and there ain’t no party like a holy ghost party cuz a holy ghost party don’t stop! …back to the vision.

I see a city transformed by the identity of Jesus Christ. There is no separa-

tion or qualifying distinction between God and his people. Jesus has become our mir-ror! We no longer detect the stains of our sins or the scars of our many failures in life. Instead we appear as he is; a righteous, holy, beloved child of God! Even the conscious-ness of sin has been forever blotted out. In this city there is rest! Hallelujah!

I see a city completely uninhabitable for lies or curs-es to exist. In the same way fire is not sustainable where this is no oxygen, depres-sion cannot be sustained in this city. Addiction cannot be sustained. Cancer cannot be sustained. Hopelessness cannot be sustained. Death has given way to life and light has overtaken darkness.

In this city the devil is completely and forever defeated. There is no memo-rial for him anywhere and he will have no rights or access ever again.

When I close my eyes I see the church as a city. A city

steeped in the love, truth and identity of God. Blow the trumpets in Zion! The year of the redeemed has come!

Welcome back to Buckley Veterinary Hospital’s monthly pet care column. This month, we are highlighting the significance of protecting and screening your furry family member for internal parasites. We will be shedding some light on the importance of regular fecal screens and preven-tative parasite control for your pets. The information in this piece is provided to you in part by IDEXX Laboratories, one of the United States’ largest pet diagnos-tic companies.

Human intestinal parasites in the United States have been virtu-ally eradicated by improvements in sewage management, availabil-ity of clean drinking water, con-trol of zoonotic parasites in food animals and the routine anthel-mintic treatment of the human population. Dogs and cats have not yet been so fortunate.

Dr. Byron L. Blagburn of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, has con-ducted surveys showing the level of infection among shelter dogs

is similar to what it was 10 years ago, when the national average was more than 10 percent infected with hookworms, roundworms or whipworms.

An ongoing national survey has also found more than 25 per-cent of cats have roundworms and more than 10 percent have hookworms. Even when pets are well taken care of and live in nice neighborhoods, there may be other animals (strays, foxes, coyotes) infected with parasites defecating in their yards and parks.

Normal behaviors like eating directly off the ground, drink-ing out of puddles, grooming, playing fetch and pouncing and biting items on the ground, pre-dispose dogs and cats to parasitic infections all year long. Dogs and cats also acquire infections from infected prey like rabbits or mice or fleas that serve as intermediate or paratenic hosts for different parasites.

Year-round internal para-site prevention products do

not guarantee that a pet will not have intestinal parasites. Recurring developmental stag-es of parasites, such as hook-worms, periodically repopulate the intestine, grow to adulthood and shed eggs in feces. Eggs and cysts produced by parasites may not be susceptible to preven-tion or treatment by the prod-ucts being administered. Lastly, owner compliance in admin-istering preventatives may be lacking.

In addition to having health implications for your furry fam-ily member, some of the parasite stages shed in dog and cat feces are zoonotic, so removing them to prevent environmental con-tamination, thereby protecting you and your family, is impor-tant.

Larva of hookworms cause nasty skin lesions. Larval stages of ascarids can migrate through the liver, lungs and eyes, caus-ing organ damage and blindness, respectively. With an estimated 3 million to 6 million people infect-ed each year, ascarid infection is one of the leading causes of uni-lateral blindness.

A pet’s history and lifestyle gives some indication as to whether they are more or less likely to have certain parasites.

Important factors include the age of a pet, recent adoption from a shelter, frequenting dog parks, administration of year-round preventives, hunting, presence of fleas, access to rodents or cock-roaches and presence of other

medical problems. Even predomi-nantly indoor pets are likely to be exposed to parasites.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends that appropriate fecal examina-tions be performed on puppies and kittens at least two to four times during the first year of life and once or twice per year in adults.

We can only hope that some-day the task of fecal examination will become exceedingly boring because we are no longer finding anything. The goal is a negative sample so that, as occurs with people, tests will only be ordered when there is clinical suspicion of infection or a history supporting a need for a fecal examination. However, for now, fecal examina-

tions continue to be an impor-tant component of the routine, preventative examination in our medical family, and it is impor-tant to perform these tests in a manner that maximizes detection of parasitic infections.

The true goal is prevention of illness, pain and suffering; to help you, as a pet owner, provide a lon-ger, healthier and happier life for your best friend!

Thank you to our readers – we welcome you back next month. As always, send questions, com-ments, or suggestions for future columns to us at [email protected]. Get out there and give your pets plenty of exercise as we head into spring and make sure you’re giving monthly flea and parasite prevention.

Parasites cause trouble, but can be prevented

Outdoor pets might be more susceptible, but even indoor animals can suffer from internal parasites.

A SUPPLEMENT TO THE COURIER-HERALD

2014 CAR & TRUCK GUIDE

FORD C-MAX HYBRIDWhen it comes to bragging rights, the Toyo-

ta Prius has long dominated the fuel-effi ciency argument. However, the 2014 Ford C-Max is looking to change the debate by offering a hy-brid with features that go beyond good mpg, namely style, comfort and a fun-to-drive at-titude. Like the Prius the C-Max is a 5-door hatchback that can comfortably fi t four people, or with its seats folded haul loads of cargo. Be-cause it’s based on the Ford Focus the C-Max is more driver-friendly than the Prius, offering a better ride, a quieter cabin and a more pol-ished interior. While the Prius may have been fi rst to the party, the 2014 Ford C-Max looks to be the kind of gate-crasher that isn’t going to leave without a fi ght.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...If you’re impressed by the good fuel econ-

omy a hybrid can deliver, but you don’t want to sacrifi ce the comfy features yielded by so many non-hybrid cars, the 2014 Ford C-Max masterfully blends both desires into a single vehicle.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014The Ford C-Max sails into 2014 relatively

unchanged. New transmission gearing aims to improve fuel economy, while a new approach to fuel-economy labeling results in slightly lower EPA estimates more in line with real-world driving.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

The C-Max’s trump card isn’t its excellent fuel economy but rather its very Focus-like driving characteristics. Ford’s hybrid pow-ertrain setup feels considerably more respon-sive than the system Toyota employs in its Prius cars, and a near-seamless transition be-tween gasoline engine and electric motor, even at higher speeds, makes you forget you’re driv-ing a hybrid car. The C-Max’s added weight – nearly 600 pounds – over the Prius should work against it, but we found the car acceler-ates briskly, loves to play in the curves and delivers a surprisingly comfortable and quiet driving experience. A tall roof and wide side glass provide excellent 360-degree visibility, while the elevated seats provide an SUV-like driving position.

MYFORD MOBILEFavorite Features

As the technology behind the plug-in hybrid is still relatively new, Ford created a smart-phone app to assist owners in managing charge times and checking battery levels. The app also provides a map of nearby charging stations.

ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTERSAerodynamics is the key to better fuel econ-

omy and less wind noise inside the passenger compartment. The C-Max’s active grille shut-ters close at highway speed, directing air over and around the car’s front end, reducing drag and thus reducing fuel consumption.

FORD FOCUSIn the intensely-competitive compact-car

market, the details count for everything, and the 2014 Ford Focus covers those details. The Focus looks great on the outside without giv-ing the impression it will fade from fashion in the next six months. The inside is modern and comfortable – it’s spacious and offers a generous assortment of premium features and touches with the ascending trim levels of S, SE and Titanium. You can have the Ford Focus as a 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback, and it’s fully competitive with all the likely suspects, including the import nameplates of Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Nissan Sen-tra, Toyota Corolla and Mazda Mazda3, and its fellow domestics the Chevy Cruze and Dodge Dart. Shopping in this market segment? The Focus deserves your attention.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...Want an effi cient compact sedan with style,

effi ciency, technology and comfort that’s still fun to drive? Give the 2014 Focus your close attention.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014For 2014, the only change of any signifi -

cance for the Focus is a new Sport Appearance Package for the SE trim level, consisting of sport cloth seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and an available rear spoiler.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

With its internationally-inspired engineering and design foundations, the 2014 Ford Focus delivers a fi rst-class driving experience. All trim levels are noted for a comfortable feel to the ride combined with quick response and confi dence-inspiring stability. The higher trim-level Focus Titanium, when fi tted with the optionally-available 18-inch wheels and 40-se-ries tires, tends to ride a little fi rmer but handle even more responsively. For those times when bad weather or tricky situations require some assistance, the AdvanceTrak stability control, in combination with a torque-vectoring control system that transfers power to the wheel with the most grip, keeps things on course. With front disc/rear drum brakes on the Focus S and 4-wheel discs on higher trim levels, the brakes deliver sure stops. Even the Focus Electric can be considered fun to drive.

MYFORD TOUCH Favorite Features

Standard on Titanium trim levels, Ford’s top-line infotainment and telematics package is based on an even more advanced – and now more user-friendly – application of the auto-maker’s acclaimed SYNC voice-command system and includes a premium 10-speaker Sony sound system, with HD Radio, media hub, in-car Wi-Fi access and more.

GREAT DRIVING EXPERIENCEFord engineers went the extra mile to give

the 2014 Focus commendable road manners and comfort, which is something we really ap-preciate.

FORD F-150Continuing a 36-year trend, the 2015 Ford

F-150 reigns supreme among full-size pick-up sales. Owners love the F-150 for its wide and varied lineup that includes multiple bed lengths, cabins and engine choices, as well as an unimaginable number of trim levels. And, although there is no diesel engine option, the F-150 is the only full-size pickup to of-fer a turbocharged gasoline engine delivering power like a V8 with unbeatable fuel economy. Whether it’s an inexpensive basic work truck that can take a beating and still hold its value or a plush, horse trailer-hauling family vehicle you can be proud to take to any country club, Ford builds an F-150 for all occasions and oc-cupations.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...If you’re looking for a more personalized

pickup truck, Ford’s F-150 for 2014 offers one of the most varied and distinct line ups in the business. From trims to work options to cutting-edge electronics and infotainment sys-tems, there is an F-150 for just about everyone.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014The 2014 Ford F-150 receives a new grille,

with HID headlights now on XLT and higher trims. XLT and SLT trims gain new 17-inch wheels, while power telescoping and folding trailer side mirrors are offered as a new option. Limited trims will offer a new Marina Blue leather interior.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

Big payload and bigger towing ability hasn’t kept Ford engineers from building a pickup truck that doesn’t ride or handle like an aging fl atbed. The 2014 Ford F-150 is so comfort-able you’d swear you wear behind the wheel of a Lincoln SUV. We tested a number of trims and found all delivered a fairly calm driving experience, with little harshness and an im-pressively quiet cabin. No matter which engine you choose, there is no shortage of power or ability, although the base V6 would be our last choice and the twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, our fi rst. On the road, the F-150’s elec-tric power-assisted steering does an excellent job of delivering feedback to the driver while keeping the big truck tracking straight and true on the highway. During a towing demonstra-tion, we hauled 20-foot trailers with absolutely zero drama, thanks in large part to the pickup’s trailer sway control, rearview camera and inte-grated trailer-brake controller.

TAILGATE STEPFavorite FeaturesDesigned to deal with the awkward and po-tentially dangerous chore of getting into the pickup truck’s bed, the integrated tailgate step on the 2014 Ford F-150 scores big. It deploys easily and even offers a convenient hand-hold.

FUSION ENERGIFresh from its debut last year, the Ford Fu-

sion continues to redefi ne the role of the mid-size family sedan, including a plug-in hybrid electric model dubbed the Fusion Energi. Un-like the hybrid car, the Energi can run at high speeds up to 22 miles solely on electric power, after which the gasoline engine kicks on to power the vehicle. Those interested in more traditional methods of propulsion will be quite satisfi ed with Ford’s gasoline only offerings, including two small displacement turbo en-gines with big power and bigger fuel economy fi gures. All 2014 Fusion models offer stunning styling, a host of sophisticated electronic audio and communication options, and a sporty de-meanor more commonly associated with Audi or VW than the big blue oval – all of which in-spired us to name it one of the 10 Best Sedans Under $25,000 for 2014.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...If you’re looking for a sporty sedan, a luxu-

rious touring car, a fuel-effi cient family car or just something to impress the neighbors, you’ll fi nd it all in the 2014 Ford Fusion.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014For 2014, the Ford Fusion receives some

new color choice inside and out, as well as optional infl atable seatbelts for outboard rear passengers, a heated steering wheel and venti-lated front seats. A new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine debuts, while the Fusion Hybrid gains a new, lower price trim level, the S.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

If there is one area in which the 2014 Ford Fusion shines, it’s the car’s athletic driving character. The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder isn’t going to win you any drag races, but even at that level, the Fusion’s excellent suspen-sion setup gives it small-car handling in a big package. Move up to the 1.5-liter and 1.6-liter turbo engines and your inner enthusiast will be most pleased, especially considering you can still get a manual transmission on the SE model. But, it’s the 2.0-liter turbo with its 240 horsepower that will make the most ardent V6 fan capitulate to this engine’s superiority. The Fusion Hybrid system’s transition between the gasoline engine and electric motor is nearly seamless, and the car can travel up to 62 mph on electric power alone. The Energi plug-in hybrid’s electric-only top speed is 85 mph, and the car is rated to travel up to 21 miles on elec-tricity alone and up to 620 miles total.

SMALL BUT EFFICIENT ENGINESAll of the gasoline powerplants used in the

2014 Ford Fusion are 4-cylinder engines, and all but the version in the base model are 2.0 liters or less. If that size makes you dubious, you need not be. These small engines pack a powerful punch thanks to turbocharging and direct-injection technology.

FUGATE

Look carefully under the hood and you will find that there are probably many belts at the front of the engine. If it’s an older car, you may notice that there are up to three and even four belts to drive all the accessories, including the air conditioning. Many new cars will have only one belt. However, it may still need to be changed, so don’t expect it to get changed on its own!

If you do your own car maintenance, you will want to inspect the belts, yourself. And the only way to do so, is visually. You will be looking for a cracked belt or an oil-soaked belt (in this case, it could mean more trouble emerging from elsewhere in the engine compartment). If the belt is glazed, chances are that it needs to be replaced, strictly because it is old and worn. However, if it’s cracked, it needs to be changed very quickly.

If you are a car owner with no specific tools, you my be better off visiting your

mechanic who not only has the experi-ence, but also the proper tools to mea-sure the belt tension and see if the part is even more worn out than it appears.

You can always change the belts your-self, especially if you own an older car with narrow drive belts. But in the case of those specific “serpentine” drive belts with all the adjusters and pulleys, you’d probably do better to let an expert do the job.

There isn’t much that a car owner can do to maintain his new car these days. Manufacturers build more reliable vehicles today, and dealers make certain that they’re always a step ahead with the maintenance of your vehicle. Owning a car today is no longer the hobby it used to be. So, if you’re a car owner what do you need to do to maintain your car?

To begin, be sure to maintain the proper pressure in all four tires at all times (and don’t forget the spare tire, while you’re at it!). Then, you can wash and clean your car as much as you like - you won’t wear out the paint! But if you really want to stick your nose under the hood (and you’ll notice that your engine is hidden under a plastic cover!) to ensure that your engine is well maintained, then check the fluid levels regularly.

Today’s cars have all the bells and whistles to let the driver know if a liquid is low or leaking. But a little preventive maintenance will not hurt. Begin with the windshield washer liquid. Although winter is behind us now, it is best to keep the windshield washer

reservoir filled with the proper liquid (you never know when you are going to drive over a muddy road or follow a truck that’s dripping with dark liquid and splashing your windshield). By the way, don’t fill up the reservoir with water. You may forget about it next fall and you’ll run into big trouble when the temperature freezes.

Engine oil can be checked easily, as you never know when an engine will burn off oil.. Brake fluids are also easy to reach, but be sure to have the proper fluid to top it off (if oil is missing, you’d best visit your mechanic or your dealer... that’s usually the sign of a problem!). The power steering fluid is another problem spot to watch and so is the engine coolant. And if possible, you can always have a look at the transmission fluid although many recent cars no longer offer that possibility. If in doubt, consult your mechanic. Fluids can usually tell a lot!

Today’s drive belts are bigger and better than ever. But they still need to

be changed at a some point.

CheCk all fluid levels in your Car Can you replaCe belts?

CHEVY SILVERADOThough its familiar sheet metal does very

little to suggest otherwise, the 2014 Chevro-let Silverado is all-new from head to toe. It’s what lies beneath the bodywork that counts, as the Silverado’s improvements become im-mediately evident once you step inside. The revamped cabin is perhaps the quietest in the segment, and the use of higher-quality mate-rials helps to spice things up considerably. A trio of new engines combined with significant chassis and suspension upgrades put the new Silverado on competitive footing with the re-cently redesigned Ram 1500, the forthcoming 2014 Toyota Tundra, and Ford’s top-selling F-150. Fuel economy numbers are nothing to get excited about, but the 2014 Chevy Sil-verado delivers big on its promise of blending work-truck capability with everyday civility.YOu’LL LIkE THIS CAR If...

While we realize the majority of full-size truck buyers are predisposed towards their fa-vorite brand, the 2014 Chevy Silverado makes a compelling case for itself. From its sophis-ticated-yet-easy-to-use infotainment system to its surprisingly refined interior, the 2014 Silverado deserves serious consideration from the brand faithful and cross-shoppers alike.WHAT’S NEW fOR 2014

The Chevy Silverado 1500 has been totally redesigned for 2014.DRIVINg ITDriving Impressions

GM engineers put a great deal of effort into developing a remarkably quiet cabin for the

2014 Chevy Silverado, and the hard work paid off. Road and wind noise are nicely quelled at highway speeds, while the retuned suspension soaks up everything short of a sinkhole. Steer-ing is light and precise, with responsiveness that belies the Silverado’s portly dimensions. Ac-celeration from the standard V6 is adequate for “air haulers” and light-duty users, though loads weighing in excess of 5,000 pounds are best left to the mid-tier 5.3-liter V8. The standard 6-speed automatic does an admirable job of keeping power on tap, especially with the well-calibrated tow/haul mode engaged. Lastly, while the pedal feels a bit spongy, the brakes themselves provide more than enough pucker power.fAVORITE fEATuRESMyLink InfotainmentWhether you’re a smartphone aficionado or a rebellious technology holdout, Chevy’s 2nd –generation MyLink system is quite possibly the most rewarding infotainment system money can buy. Features like mobile application support, real-time data widgets and one-shot destination entry (speak an entire address at once) deliver connectivity without complexity.uNDER THE HOOD

While their displacements carry over un-changed, all three engines available in the 2014 Silverado are entirely new from the block up. Each Ecotech3 engine incorporates direct fuel-injection, an all-aluminum design, and cylinder deactivation technology that seamlessly shuts down half of the engine’s cylinders under light loads. A 6-speed automatic transmission linked to a manual shift mode is standard across the board. Due to low customer take rates and negli-gible performance gains, the Silverado’s 2-mode hybrid powertrain is no more.

FAME

“I know Chevy trucks; I own two myself!”

Today’s cars have very good exhaust systems. In fact, the exhaust system now plays a more important role on vehicles than it did in the past. Indeed, it’s job is not only to get rid of the gases produced by the engine’s internal combustion, it must also clean them up almost com-pletely in order to meet environmental standards. But, just as with any other car part, the exhaust system will have the unfortunate tendency to deteriorate with time, its worst enemies being heat and corrosion. In the case of heat, if you don’t drive long enough to heat up the metal and allow it to dry out completely, condensation will build up within the exhaust system, allowing rust - the system’s second worst enemy - to develop. And although many recent exhaust systems are made of stain-less steel, rust will still develop, mainly on the exterior.

The exhaust system is composed of sev-eral parts, beginning with the exhaust manifold which connects from the engine, the catalytic converter (an expensive part to replace!) the muffler and/or resonator and the pipes themselves, with all the clamps, brackets and hangers, and other parts which also have a tendency to fail

often: the heat shields. These are the parts which may produce a rattling sound under the car. Finally, modern cars and trucks also have sensors in the exhaust system which work with the computer.

Other than a visual inspection, there is not much that a handyman can do with mod-ern exhausts. In case of a leak or when in doubt, it is better to have a professional do the job!

The best you can do to maintain your exhaust system, is to check it regularly, espe-

cially if you own an older car.

A SUPPLEMENT TO THE COURIER-HERALD

2014 CAR & TRUCK GUIDE

RAM 1500Pickup trucks are now being asked to de-

liver ever-better fuel economy, and the 2014 Ram 1500 will be right around the top of the list. Among its fuel-saving features are an en-gine stop-start function, an available Torque-Flite 8-speed automatic transmission, and ac-tive aerodynamics, with grille shutters and an air suspension that, among other things, can lower the vehicle to reduce aerodynamic drag. There are all the expected confi gurations of bod-ies and cargo beds, 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive, and three engine choices: the 3.6-liter 305-horsepower gasoline V6, the well-known 5.7-liter 395-horsepower Hemi gasoline V8, and the new 3.0-liter 240-horsepower turbocharged EcoDiesel V6, which will be the fuel-economy leader. The 2014 Ram 1500 offers something for just about any full-size truck buyer.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...If you want the only full-size pickup (so far)

with the fuel economy of a smaller-displace-ment diesel engine yet all the pulling and work-ing power you’d expect, the 2014 Ram 1500 is for you.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014By far, the most important news for the Ram

1500 for 2014 is the addition of the 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 engine. With 240 horsepower, it makes 420 lb-ft of torque (more than the 5.7-liter Hemi) and at only 2,000 rpm, so this combination will not shirk from hard work. And, it is expected to deliver best-in-class fuel economy while doing it.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

No full-size pickup drives more like a car than the 2014 Ram 1500. Instead of leaf springs for the rear suspension, the Ram 1500 has a multi-link layout with coil springs, with benefi ts in ride comfort and handling. Optionally avail-able is an air-spring suspension and, while the ride quality difference between the two might be diffi cult to detect, the air suspension gives other advantages: Its load-leveling and variable ride-height enhances fuel economy, reduces load-in height, allows easier entry and exit, and provides increased ground clearance for severe off-road conditions. For most general applica-tions the 3.6-liter V6 will be perfectly accept-able. However, for pulling larger trailers, there’s the choice of the robust Hemi V8 or the new EcoDiesel, which makes even more torque than the Hemi. The levels of wind and road noise, while very good for a pickup, are more than what would be expected from a mid-line sedan.

ECODIESEL V6 ENGINE Favorite Features

As fuel economy becomes increasingly im-portant to truck buyers, Ram steps to the front with the 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 engine, with 240 horsepower, 420 lb-ft of torque at only 2,000 rpm, and what will be extraordi-nary fuel effi ciency. This engine is the forerun-ner of a new breed of pickup powerplant.

AIR SUSPENSIONA versatile full-size pickup needs a versatile

suspension system, which is why the 2014 Ram 1500 offers electronically-controlled air sus-pension. With the push of a button, ride height can be lowered for ease- of-access to the cabin and cargo bed or raised for up to 10.7 inches of ground clearance.

DODGE DARTThe smallest sedan in Dodge’s lineup,

the 2014 Dodge Dart is a well-crafted 4-door that matches a contemporary appearance with good creature features and impressive overall handling. Based on a purpose-modifi ed Alfa Romeo platform, the compact Dart goes head-to-head with prime rivals like the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra,Kia Forte, Mazda Mazda3, Nissan Sen-tra, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Jetta. At-tractively priced and offering the choice of three engines and a host of class-exclusive techno touches, this roomy and comfortable front-drive Dodge also earns outstanding safety ratings. Those impressive credentials notwithstanding, the Dart still struggles to take market share in a segment that remains dominated by perennial class leaders, the Civic and Corolla.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...The Dart’s youthful styling, spacious and

accommodating interior, sporty character, in-novative class-above technology, and top safety ratings make this compact Dodge sedan an at-tractive (if frequently overlooked) choice in an extremely competitive segment.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014Introduced in the late-arriving 2013 Dart GT,

the 184-horsepower/2.4-liter “Tigershark” en-gine also becomes standard in the 2014 SXT and Limited models. Redesigned front bucket seats offer more comfort, and all but the base Dart SE boast additional standard features. Dart option packages also have been reshuffl ed to better refl ect customer preferences.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

A rigid core structure and well-sorted Euro-fl avored suspension give the Dart a confi dent and well-controlled feel that reaches a clear zenith in the enthusiast-oriented GT model. Al-though boasting the most powerful base engine in its class, the Dart also is the heaviest player in the segment. That extra mass takes a toll on ac-celeration and passing performance regardless of engine or transmission choice, particularly in the SE when its 2.0-liter engine is backed by the 6-speed automatic transmission. While the 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo in the Dart Aero makes the same 160 horsepower, its 24 percent more torque at virtually half the revs make the Aero considerably livelier as well as less thirsty. Buy-er requests for better performance led Dodge to fi t the 184-horsepower/2.4-liter in the volume-leading SXT and Limited as well as the GT for 2014, but even that extra muscle can’t match the 200-plus horsepower available in the far-lighter Civic Si, Focus ST and Jetta GLI.

MULTIAIR ENGINE TECHNOLOGYFavorite Features

Developed by Fiat and fi tted to both the 1.4-liter and 2.4-liter Dart engines, MultiAir technology individually controls the lift and timing of the engine’s intake valves to improve both performance and fuel economy.

FLOATING-ISLAND DASH BEZELA class-exclusive feature that’s standard on

Dart Aero, Limited and GT models, this innova-tive interior element is ringed in Ruby Red LED light piping and contains the reconfi gurable 7.0-inch TFT (Thin Film Transistor) instrument cluster display and 8.4-inch UConnect touch-screen multimedia system.

DODGE CHARGERIs the 2014 Dodge Charger a family se-

dan or hot rod? Could be both. It offers the room, ride comfort and safety features a fam-ily requires, with the style and performance the enthusiast driver wants. The roofl ine looks lifted from a coupe and the sculpturing on the sides and eye-catching taillight treatment note a linkage to earlier Chargers from the 1960s. But this modern Charger has features and ca-pabilities that would leave owners of those earlier versions open-mouthed with envy, with V6 engines that far outperform those ancestral V8s, the effi ciency of an 8-speed automatic transmission and all the expected electronic conveniences. Add in the availability of all-wheel drive (AWD) and the inspiring Hemi V8 engine choices, and both the family and the enthusiast can be happy.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...You need four doors and interior room. You

want some get-with-it performance. You have a modest budget. You should look at the 2014 Dodge Charger.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014A new Redline Package includes 20-inch

Black Chrome aluminum wheels and a 3.6-liter V6 with cold-air induction and 300 horsepow-er. The AWD Sport includes the 300-horse-power V6 or 370-horsepower V8. There’s also a Wheel Sport Appearance Group, and new paint choices include Header Orange, TorRed and Plum Crazy historic colors.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

You don’t need the Hemi V8 to get the 2014 Charger sedan moving in a big hurry. The base 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 makes 292 horsepower, and the uprated version is 300. The V6 Charger is, after all, standard issue for huge numbers of police departments and they wouldn’t make that pick if it wouldn’t catch bad guys. Add the 8-speed automatic and you have not only per-formance, but thoroughly commendable fuel economy. The Charger deals with corners with a sophisticated fully-independent suspension: control arms in front and a multilink arrange-ment in the rear, with coil springs and assertive anti-roll bars all around. Steering is a precise and responsive rack-and-pinion setup. Brakes are 4-wheel discs, and the Performance Brake Package brings large vented rotors front and rear, and twin-piston calipers in the front. Even if you never use it, the Charger is engineered and built for some serious driving.

GREAT ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCEFavorite Features

A selection of powerful and responsive en-gines, a sophisticated suspension, great steer-ing, big and strong brakes, all well-blended into a very competent package. Four-door se-dan or not, he 2014 Charger can get down the road and around the corners, and doesn’t cost much in the bargain.

SUPER TRACK PAKThis optional R/T package turns the Charger

into a track-ready player, adding P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tires, 20-inch wheels, high-performance monotube shock absorbers, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, performance brake linings, performance steer-ing and 3-mode electronic stability control (ESC).

JEEP WRANGLERAfter decades of development and history,

the 2014 Jeep Wrangler SUV remains faith-fully true to its hard-earned and thoroughly-deserved reputation as the universal standard for off-road vehicles. The Jeep Wrangler line offers something for everybody, from a basic 2-door Sport with a soft top, to the go-where-the-trails-aren’t Rubicon. If you need more room the longer Wrangler Unlimited offers four doors and other features, but with the same level of off-road prowess. The engine is Chrysler’s highly-commendable 3.6-liter Pen-tastar V6, which delivers plenty of power and noteworthy fuel economy, and the Wrangler is also one of the few remaining vehicles that’s available with a manual transmission. That’s why we named it one of the 10 Best SUVs Un-der $25,000 for 2014.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF...You’ve already decided if you’ll like a

Jeep Wrangler. This SUV will go anywhere tires and wheels will take you. In the bargain, you’re going to give up a lot of creature com-forts, protection from the elements and modern expectations. But you already know that.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014Changes for the 2014 Jeep Wrangler include

a Freedom Edition and a Rubicon X special edition for even more adventuresome off-roading, plus the retro-looking Willys Wheeler Edition inspired by World War II-era Jeeps. A Trail Kit includes a tow strap, D-rings, gloves and a carrying bag, and the Sport is available with 32-inch tires.

DRIVING ITDriving Impressions

Once a Jeep, always a Jeep, and the 2014 Wrangler SUV remains true to why people buy them – body-on-frame construction, front and rear live axles, generous ground clearance, minimal overhangs, and a distinctive look that can be traced back for almost three-quarters of a century keep the customers coming. Even though this layout is heavily skewed to off-road use, driving it on paved surfaces is far better than might initially be expected. The suspension deals with pavement irregularities as well as it deals with off-road bumps and ruts, and the precise steering is as welcome off-pavement as on. Get away from the smooth and hard surfaces and the Wrangler is every-thing expected, capable of dealing with incred-ible landscapes and even crawling along at a walking pace. And, with the Pentastar V6, the Wrangler has its best engine ever, with plenty of power for the ups and downs.

3.6-LITER PENTASTAR V6Favorite Features

The Pentastar V6 gives the Jeep Wrangler ample power, smooth operation, nice response and commendable highway fuel economy; It’s just about as perfectly suited as it can be. And if you equip the Wrangler with the available 5-speed automatic, you’ll enjoy enhanced re-fi nement without giving up hardly any capabil-ity or effi ciency.

COMMANDING OFF-ROAD CAPABILITYWhy else buy a Wrangler but for its capabil-

ity to go far beyond the end of pavement? It may sound worn-out or obvious, but the Wran-gler SUV really is very, very good at this, and its off-road prowess remains, after decades, the primary reason for buying one in the fi rst place.

Page 18: Enumclaw Courier-Herald, March 26, 2014

The end of March is the beginning of spring garden projects and if this is the year you decide to have a beautiful landscape or productive vegetable gar-den, get organized with the help of this list to get you growing.

Five chores to do now: procrastination will just mean more work later

1 – Weed, weed and weed some more. The tiny white blooming shot weed is the most important weed to smother with a mulch or hand pull this time of year. If you allow this imported weed to continue blooming it will shoot tiny seeds all over the landscape, hitting you in the face as you bend over and try to pull it up. Sheets of wet newspaper three to four pages thick can be layered over large patches of this persistent weed and then covered with a mulch of bark chips. Getting control of the weeds early means less work all summer long.

2 – Mow, feed and lime the lawn. In our damp climate moss will always be with us. But lots of moss in the lawn is also a symptom of soil that is acid and adding lime or calcium carbonate in the spring will help to neutralize the soil and help with drainage if you soil

contains clay. Fertilizing the lawn in spring helps the turf fill in bare spots where moss wants to grow. Be sure to sharpen the blade on your mower for a crisp, clean cut and fill in any dips and valleys with sandy loam so the lawn area is perfectly level.

3 – Prune, when needed. Most roses, fruit trees and overgrown shrubs ben-efit from a spring pruning but not all plants need to be pruned. If you haven’t removed the old growth from clumps of ornamental grasses or if you have an overgrown spiraea, ninebark, buddleah or winter weary nandina you can cut these shrubs back to almost ground level for spring renewal. Don’t be prun-ing rhododendrons or azaleas in early spring or you’ll be cutting off all the flower buds. Pruning after blooming is the general rule of green thumb.

4 – Feed your soil. This means add-ing compost or manure to the vegetable garden and around hungry roses or applying an organic fertilizer like alfalfa pellets to the soil and working this in slightly with a light raking motion. Your soil is teaming with microbes and other living critters that need organic matter to feed upon. The more living creatures in your soil the healthier your plants.

5 – Clean the beds, stop the slugs. In our wet spring weather, slugs devour the new growth of vegetables, annuals and perennials and cleaning up decaying foliage of last year’s plants is one way to destroy the slug’s favorite habitat. Stock up on slug bait (they make several brands that are pet safe) and be sure to bait for slugs around newly-planted primroses, pansies and lettuce starts.

Five chores that can wait until the weather

warms (like after mid-May) • Don’t buy tomato plants unless you

have a heated greenhouse.• Don’t plant the seeds of warm sea-

son crops like beans, corn or squash.

Some work can wait until the weather warms up just a bit

NOTICEWashington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (re- ceipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d bu ye r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quan- tity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the de- livery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a cord by v isual iz ing a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet . Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. To make a f i r ewood complaint, call 360-902- 1857.

• Don’t put heat-loving annuals like petunias, marigolds or geraniums into pots or windowboxes.

• Don’t try to aerate the lawn if the soil is still wet. Waterlogged soil is easily compacted.

• Don’t use a weed-and-feed product on your lawn. Cold night temperatures make the weed killers inef-fective.

to the repair shop. Fortunately, my insurance covered most of the tow-ing costs.

At the shop, the mechanic re-tapped the threads and then told me the spark plugs I had pur-chased at the local auto parts store were too “hot” for the coils that now go to each spark plug rather than the old way I was familiar with, a distribu-tor and wires. I was told that had I used the type of plugs I had purchased, I would have burned up the coils at $150 each (times four). The mechan-

ic replaced the plugs with the right type for the truck and I was able to drive it home.

The owner of the mechanic’s shop was being sympathetic when he told me, “We’ve all done it.” We all make mistakes that are costly and that I shouldn’t beat myself up too much.

What lessons did I learn from my out-of-date, behind-t he-technolog y attempts at being an at-home mechanic? Leave the new technology to the experts. A lot has changed since I replaced the spark plugs in my 20s and 30s. Times have changed and automobile technology is a lot more complex than it used to be. Kathleen, my wife, said I should stick to what I’m good at and let others do the repairs. Good advice.

Rather than spending my time doing what I’m not good at, I should focus on doing and improving what I am strong in. That’s what I tell my high school completion students and maybe I should follow my own advice.

ELFERS FROM 6

We would like to thank all of our wonderful friends and cousins that helped so much during the loss of our dad, father-in-law and grandpa.

A special thank you to the Enumclaw Men’s Club for providing the per-fect setting to celebrate Claude’s life. Thank you

Beth for making this hap-pen. To Olsen’s Meats for their great generosity and thoughtfulness. To my cousin George for making Dad’s favorite kielbasa. To all our thoughtful friends and family that brought in food. To Doug Wagner for the perfect eulogy; you did a great job. And to all our

wonderful friends who took care of everything for me, Fae Wagner, Robert and Kathy Chambers, Becky Birklid, Connie Johnson, Betty and Joe Mallery. I could not have done it with-out you.

To everyone, thank you for helping us celebrate his life in exactly the way he would have wanted – great family and friends and great food. The cards and flowers warmed our hearts and brightened our days.

exist anymore. There’s yet another situation I’d highlight. Corporate America pays few taxes, if any at all. In general, Boeing hasn’t paid any taxes for 10 years and, further-more, owing to any army of lawyers who’ve manipulated the tax code, we’ve recent found out that the gov-ernment apparently owes Boeing millions of dollars!

Similarly, wealthy individuals have access to lawyers and accoun-tants who find loopholes in the tax laws and, consequently, a CEO who clears more than $20,000,000 a year often pays fewer taxes than a secre-tary. Of course, when you examine the top wealthiest families (the top 1 percent) you find many of them don’t work anyway. They can easily live off their inheritance. And just

in case there isn’t enough inheri-tance to live in the style they’re accustomed to, they also marry into more money. Whereas the lower class and the struggling middle class often marry for love, it’s different in the upper class. The “noblesse” feels the importance of love is greatly exaggerated. They point out that a lot of people know how to love, but very few people are rich. And you can learn to love anyone if the money is right.

In this respect, the upper class tends to close in upon itself.

I’ll conclude with yet another sta-tistic that’s received considerable press in the last few months. A mere 85 people (family autocrats) have and control more wealth than half the world’s population (3.5 billion people).

As they used to say, what’s wrong with this picture?

Washington University, guid-ing the Wildcats to consecutive NAIA national championship appearances.

Since entering the coaching ranks, Callero has established a reputation for reversing the for-tunes of programs on the rocks.

As head coach at Seattle University from 2001 to 2009), Callero directed the Redhawks to 75 victories during his final four seasons and successfully guided the program through its Division I transition. His final season with the Redhawks produced a 21-8 campaign and the program’s highest winning percentage in 45 seasons.

Prior to his success at Seattle, Callero guided Division III

University of Puget Sound to a combined 22-25 record dur-ing the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons. The Loggers finished 14-10 during his final season to secure the program’s first win-ning campaign in nine years.

Before pointing Puget Sound in a winning direction, Callero served the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach at USC.

He compiled a 130-49 mark during a pair of three-season stints at Highline Community College (1989-92 and 1995-98) and, before departing for USC, helped guide the Thunderbirds to successive Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships. He twice earned conference Coach of the Year praise after Highline posted a combined 63-2 mark during the 1996-97 and 1997-98

campaigns.Between successful stints at

Highline Community College, Callero served as the head coach and as a guidance coun-selor at Sumner High (1992-95). Under Callero, Sumner also posted its first winning cam-paign in six years.

The postseason success of this year’s Cal Poly team has bumped Callero’s visibility, largely due to a regular season record that didn’t seem to inspire confidence. His squad lost nine of its final 11 before entering the Big West Conference tour-nament. But the Mustangs won the tourney title to earn the program’s first NCAA bid. With the victory over Texas Southern, Cal Poly squared off against Wichita State with a season record of 14-19.
