ELIGIBILITY
You are eligible to apply if you are a registered business within the Avon Valley region
and based in the Shires of Northam, Toodyay, York, Goomalling, Beverley, Cunderdin
and Tammin and can demonstrate a substantial degree of financial and managerial
autonomy and reasonable freedom from external policy direction in relation to the
business operations.
THE DETAIL
• The Application form is comprised of 3 sections:
o Business Details, o Categories o Application questions
Please complete ALL 3 sections
• If you believe a specific application question is not applicable to you, please state the reason(s).
• The closing date for all submissions is 5pm on Friday 31st August 2018.
• Applications may be submitted electronically to the email inbox [email protected]. No other email address.
• Alternatively, applications may be submitted on either CD or USB Drive to the Northam Chamber of Commerce Office at 160 Fitzgerald St, Northam by the closing date and time.
• It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the application has been received. In the interest of fairness any submissions received after this date will not be considered.
• Electronic applications are to be submitted in in either Word or PDF format
• You may include up to an additional five A4 pages of supporting documentation in your application. This could include business brochures, planning documents, advertising, customer feedback etc.
• Applicants are also requested to provide an Inspirational quote, of 7 to 10 words, describing their business experience/motto.
• Please try to stay within the suggested word count. Content significantly over the count will be scored poorly.
• Words essential for graphs and customer testimonials are NOT included in your word count.
• Although you might have the best business in the region, your success will depend on the information you provide in your submission.

AWARD CATEGORIES / ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
BUSINESS AWARDS
Award category Eligibility criteria
Best Business with 0-4 Employees
The business must employ up to four staff members (full-time or equivalent) at the time of your application to the awards.
Best Business with 5-9 Employees
The business must employ up to nine staff members (full-time or equivalent) at the time of your application to the awards.
Best Business with 10+ Employees
The business must employ up to ten staff members (full-time or equivalent) at the time of your application to the awards.
Best Home-based Business
The business is operated either at home (you carry out most of the work at your home) or from home (and business does not own or rent any premises other than your home).
Best New (Start-up) Business
The business must have been trading for a maximum of two years at the time of applying to the awards.
Best Not for Profit Business
The business must be a not for profit business within the community.
Ray Head Community Engagement
The Ray Head Community Award recognises a not-for-profit organisation in the Northam community which has demonstrated excellence and commitment to the community.
Best Community Engagement Business
The business must be able to show that it has made a significant contribution to its local community. The award is to recognise a business whose community involvement is not the actual focus of its operations; it is about acknowledging the additional efforts made to support the local community.
People’s Choice The business must be nominated by a member of the public and demonstrate excellence in the area of Customer Service.
Best Avon Valley Business of the Year
Eligibility is being a winner in one of the above categories with the highest aggregate score.

BUSINESS PERSON AWARDS
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employee of the Year
This Award recognises the achievement of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employee who demonstrates commitment to their role in the workplace and community.
Young Business Person of the Year
• Entrants must be 35 years or younger at time of the application
• Provide examples of activities the nominee has undertaken to advance the business, franchise or commercial venture
• Outline the contribution to the local and wider community; and benefits to Western Australia
• Has the nominee had any recent business achievements or performance success?
• Source of funding, grants and budgets (if applicable)
• Barriers or difficulties the nominee has faced and how they have been overcome.
Northam Women in Business Award
The intent of this award is to recognise and celebrate the leadership and creativity of inspirational business women in the Avon Valley. This award is to celebrate women’s achievements and encourage women to accomplish their goals whilst assisting and leading other women by example. Entrants should have
• A compelling vision that shapes what they do
• Excellent leadership and inspiration for women in the Avon valley and beyond
• Overcoming adversity with determination and creative problem solving
• Championing the skills of relationship building and negotiation in business
• Mentoring women to succeed
• Making a difference to the community (business or otherwise) of women in the Avon Valley
• Demonstrated initiative and leadership
Business Person of the Year
The intent of this award is to recognise and celebrate the leadership of a business person within the Avon Valley. This award is for business people who are leaders in both business and their local community whilst assisting and leading others by example. The winner will demonstrate:
• A compelling vision that shapes what they do
• Excellent leadership
• Overcoming adversity with determination and creative problem solving
• Championing the skills of relationship building and negotiation in business
• Mentoring others to succeed
• Giving back to their community
• Challenging the notion that there is only one way of doing things.

ENTRY CHECKLIST
Ensure you are eligible for your selected category / categories
Have you completed all Business Details?
Have you indicated all Category entries you are applying for?
Have you have answered all the relevant questions?
Have you signed your submission?
Have you included your Inspirational quote, of 7 to 10 words?
Have you attached all supporting documentation?
Have you included a high-resolution image of your logo?
Please submit 5 high resolution business photos to be showcased at the Awards Night in case you qualify as a finalist.
You might like to include yourself, your staff, your premises, your products/services. (These photos may also be used by the Northam Chamber of Commerce (NCC) to promote your business in the lead up to the Awards night or on the NCC website.
Formatting
To ensure the submission is easy to read, consider the following suggestions:
• Use size 11 font, using either Arial, Tahoma or Times New Roman font type
• Use clear headings
• Use bullet points
• Keep paragraphs short
• Clearly indicate on each page of your submission, your business name
Make sure the document is well spaced and not cramped on the page, use pictures,
graphs or quotes to engage the judges.

QUESTIONS – BUSINESS AWARDS
You are encouraged to copy and paste the questions to create an entry submission.
Q1 - Business Overview
Please provide a broader overview of your business including a brief history and summary of your current operations. Describe your products and/or services. What makes your business unique? (400 words)
Set the scene for the judges, imagine they do not know anything about your business. Explain why potential customers would choose your business rather than your competitors. How are you achieving business excellence? What makes you an award-winning business? Any financial performance does not need to include figures, but you should demonstrate good financial management and growth.
Q2 - Business Planning
Describe your past business goals and how you've achieved them, as well as your future goals and what strategies you are implementing to bring them into fruition.
(350 words)
Include details of the strategies and the specific results you’ve achieved. Highlight any changes you’ve made to your business operations, such as streamlining systems, introducing new products/services or sustainability initiatives. If you employ staff, include strategies used to recruit, retain and motivate them. Note – the judges will be looking for specific and measured results.
Q3 - Marketing
Describe your target customers, how you market to them and the effectiveness of these activities. (250 words)
Profile your ideal customers in this answer and how you promote your business to them. What tools do you use to promote your business and what results do they achieve? How do you measure success?
Q4 - Customer Service
How do you create and retain loyal customers? How do you measure customer satisfaction? What strategies does your business use to deliver excellent customer service? (350 words)
What strategies do you use to engage and communicate with your customers? What do you do to ensure your customers are satisfied and come back for more and/or spread the word to family and friends? What are your customer service policies and procedures? How do you acquire and respond to customer feedback?

Your submission might include an overview of where you work and your job duties and responsibilities. You may include examples of any training you have undertaken or any initiative you have shown at work.

The applicant should state why they believe they should be the Avon Valley Business Excellence Awards “Young Business Person of the Year”
Your submission should include, but is not limited to:
