We are so many and so different; we can learn so

much from each other. Let’s bring interdisciplinary

education and work back to the centre of our strategy!

Inspiration



- public higher education institution;

- 7 schools (engineering, business, education, arts, health, technology,

design);

- > 18.000 students;

- applied research and development tradition and

vocation;

- close connection with business (at the ❤️ of PT

industry);

- > 10 years of entrepreneurship support activities;

Who are we?



- new generation of entrepreneurship support policies:- business as usual was not enough anymore!

- were we on the “right side of history”?- dissatisfaction with main outcomes from our

programs:- we needed better business and product ideas!

- we needed better teams!- entrepreneurship ecosystem grew substantially:

- are we all doing the same?

- in what way could we be more effective in the life cycle?- we were unable to involve “unusual suspects”:

- how do we get musicians, performing and visual artists in?- the 7 schools were not working together:

- break the silos!!!!

Starting Point



- develop a distinctive entrepreneurial culture @ Porto Polytechnic;

- add value to the entrepreneurship ecosystem, by providing students with world class education;

- allow students to co-design and be responsible for their education;

- provide the right setup to enhance ideation, concepting and commitment stages.

Ambition





- internal analysis: - analysis of our educational offer; - analysis of our educational offer in entrepreneurship & product dev.; - workshop with stakeholders from all schools (using HEInnovate);- extended dialogue with startup founders and others at the

ecosystem;- extended dialogue at Presidency level.

- international benchmarking:- applying the HEInnovate tool (self assessment and comparison);- identifying international best practices in each dimension of

HEInnovate;

Work Methodology



- back at our original mission:- we are higher education institutions! - our job is to provide students with the best possible education! - we don’t know how to run incubators, accelerators, hackatons, etc!

- other people (including students) do it much better that we do!!!!- interdisciplinary education and work is part of our

DNA:- schools need to collaborate! students demand it!- we need to design joint programs, and/or…

- … allow students and teachers to move back and forwards!- “tangibles”, manufactured products, technology…

that’s our thing!- don’t misunderstand us… we love virtual, software, IT, etc., …- but we are damn good at designing, developing, prototyping and

scaling products!- and 95% of the industry around us are also into that!!!

Conclusions



- porto design factory:- experimental education platform for co-creation, development and

acceleration of innovative ideas; - “nobody’s house; everybody’s house”; it belongs to the 7 schools! - informal, low-hierarchy and disruptive approach to the class room;- students come first, second and third…

- part of Design Factory Global Network, powered by Aalto University;- redesigning our whole educational offer:

- since 2014 we have a Pro-President just for that!!!- redesign curricula, by introducing an interdisciplinary, teamwork-

centered and entrepreneurial insight;- we love super-specialists!!! but “no man [or woman] is an island…”;- more flexibility, more optional courses, more in-university

mobility…- adopt the Bologna spirit at last!!!!- get companies to co-design our education with us!!!

Outcomes



- organization level:- a new project unit, to get the schools to get together;- a new pro-president to rethink and redesign our educational offer;- more international collaboration;- more effective collaboration with industry;

- new people brought to inner core of the Presidency (non-academic);- education level:

- redesigning curricula, embedding this new entrepreneurship culture;

- rethink the whole educational offer;- new importance to short term / non-credit programs;- new programs based on interdisciplinary team work;

- international product development joint projects.- cultural level:

- dialogue is starting! people are curious about crazy pilots we started;

- students as responsible for own education;- in-house exchange of knowledge and resources.

Changes



But have only just begun…
