“With each passing experience, our confidence grew and the sense of purpose for our innovation heightened.”

Duration: 1 hour lecture Facilitator(s): UNSW Founders Startup CoachesVenue: Your classroom or Michael Crouch Innovation Centre (MCIC)

Our students are graduating into a complex world where work is being radically reshaped by technology and innovation, and where the complex, pressing problems confronting the world demand global solutions.

Automation and AI will see the disappearance of 47% of existing jobs in the next two decades, to be supplanted by the emergence of entirely new industries. At the same time, the world has entered a critical phase in confronting issues of global scale. In the coming decades, the urgent need to address climate change, resource scarcity, mass migration and sustainability will require inter-disciplinary solutions of global impact.

Creativity, innovation, sustainability, resourcefulness, resilience and collaboration will be key to meeting these challenges and taking advantage of these opportunities.

This lecture exposes you to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and startups to help you launch your UNSW Founders Journey.

The Founders Program is the university-wide initiative to support students, staff and recent alumni to build entrepreneurship skills, and found and grow real companies.

In this lecture, we’ll introduce students to our suite of 10 initiatives, which provide opportunities for participants at every stage of entrepreneurship, whether they’re a true beginner or their startup’s already gone global. We’ll walk them through the ‘Founders Journey’, which typically starts with foundational programming in the MCIC, then might encompass technical product development or prototyping services, incubation and business coaching. The journey culminates with participation in UNSW’s flagship 10x Accelerator.

We’ll also introduce students to our ‘Founders’ Ethos’; our commitment to instilling the values of diversity, collaboration, sustainability and excellence in all that we do, and our expectation that our Founders will commit to ‘give back’ in their ventures.

Introduction to the UNSW Founders Program MCIC

FoundationsThe Michael Crouch Innovation Centre runs a comprehensive and year round program of upskilling and confidence building workshops: MCIC Foundations, open to everyone in the UNSW community.

Hackathons

Hackathons are a great way to get the ball rolling on solving a whole range of real world ‘wicked’ problems. A hack is a competitive and immersive learning experience. Students collaborate intensively in cross-disciplinary teams to create solutions from scratch by ideating, prototyping, testing, receiving feedback from mentors and pitching their solutions to a panel of experts.

A fun and collaborative introduction to the fundamentals of creative problem solving, learning and implementing the process and framework of design thinking.

At the end of the session, students will have an understanding of the creative process of design thinking, innovation tools and an introduction to an entrepreneurial mindset.

Students will get hands-on experience with generative design and rapid prototyping techniques and processes. Their ideas will turn into physical prototypes within the two days!

Pitching Practice

The purpose of a pitch is to start a conversation, spark curiosity and questions about ideas and solutions! Pitching is an essential skill not only for startups, but for anyone seeking to persuasively communicate an idea.

At the end of the session students will have learnt practical tools and techniques to connect with their audience, communicate key messages and deliver their pitches with impact.

Inspire your students and increase engagement with course content by organising in partnership with UNSW the Entrepreneurship team, a ‘Shark Tank’ styled pitch event.

Students pitch their ideas/solutions generally within 3 to 5 minutes in front of an expert panel.

Founders JourneyThe Founder’s journey begins in the Michael Crouch Innovation Centre, where participants can hack, prototype and tinker in one of the best makerspaces in the country. Through education sessions, workshops and talks, our Founders learn new tools, tactics and mindsets to set them up for longterm success in the startup ecosystem.

Founders with a bright idea, project or viable startup can then

launch their startup journey through Founders Coach & Connect, where they’ll receive one-on-one mentoring and business advice from our experienced team throughout their participation in our programs.

From there, a world of new opportunities is open for our Founders. If they’ve got a great idea but no Chief Technology Officer , our world-first FounderLab program can build them a platform for free.

If they’re ready to go global, our Global Founders program can help them enter international markets and make new contacts. And if they’re a female founder, New Wave Founders offers tailored incubator, networking and mentorship opportunities to help raise the level of women’s participation in the ecosystem.

Once our Founders’ startups are ready to level up, they can access our Accelerator stream, beginning with our pre-accelerators

Start, Launch and Grow. The Founders’ Journey culminates with Founders 10x, UNSW’s flagship Accelerator which identifies exceptional, high impact startups and accelerates their investment readiness through masterclass, tailored mentoring and networking and significant funding support.

This ambitious vision for embedding entrepreneurship is made sustainable through our evergreen Founders Fund and by the support of our generous donors.
