Subhash Chandra was born on November 30th 1950, in Hisar, Haryana.

His families are Marwaris who settled in the old undivided Punjab four generations ago.

They entered the grain trade and by 1966, ran one dal mill and two cotton gins.

His father lost heavily in cotton trading and the business’ entire net worth was wiped out.

Plus, there were debts to suppliers and moneylenders.

At the time, Chandra was seventeen and in his first year at engineering college.

His father pulled him out of university and told him that he had to find some way of helping the family business.

Due to the debts they had no capital to run any business, he struggled to find something that they could do without putting in our money.

Fortunately, he met the district manager of the Food Corporation of India and agreed to do some business with them.

In 1981, Indira Gandhi’s government told the Russians that they were to deal with Subhash Chandra.

He made crores in profit on the transaction. After all those years at industrial

diversification, Chandra was a millionaire. And the profits had not come from industry or

packaging. As part of the endeavor, they opened the Essel

Packaging plant and made huge investments in property including 800 acres in Gurgaon – Subhash had the foresight to see that as Delhi expanded, this would be a growth area.

This onetime rice trader from Hissar, Haryana has today transformed into a media baron and his other interests include packaging, theme parks, lotteries and cinema multiplexes.

The Zee chairman dropped out after standard 12. He is the founder of Zee TV, India's first private TV channel, competes with, among others, Sony Entertainment Television and STAR Plus.

In November 2009, he took over management responsibility of Daily News & Analysis (DNA), which features among the top 8 English dailies in India and is one of fastest growing English newspapers in the country.

Subhash Chandra was awarded the The Hall of Fame for Continuing Contribution to Industry (Entrepreneur) at the annual Exchange4media Indian News Broadcasting Awards (EINBA) 2010.

The EINBA awarded excellence for work and achievements during the period between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010.

Mr. Subhash Chandra bagged lots of awards and honorary degrees. A few among them are :

1. Entrepreneur of the Year’ by Ernst & Young in 1999.

2. Business Standard’s Businessman of the Year’ in 1999.

3. ‘Global Indian Entertainment Personality of the Year’ by FICCI for 2004.

Subhash Chandra has also been recognized for his role as a philanthropist.

He has set up several organizations for social causes, including TALEEM OR Transnational Alternate Learning for Emancipation and Empowerment through Multimedia.

TALEEM is involved in various educational and research activities.

He is the president of Global Vipassana Foundation, which is a philosophical organisation that spreads spiritual teachings

He is also the chairman of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of India that runs a non-formal one-teacher schools all over India.
