When St. Anthony Main was approached late last year by the Minnesota Woodworkers Guild with the idea of hosting their show in the fall of 1983 we were obviously quite thrill ed and fl attered to be considered by thi s presti gious group. M y ow n personal admirati on goes back many years for what I consider to be truly an art , practiced and pursued by talented, hardworking, dedicated arti sans.

Their choice of having St. Anthony Main as the site is quite fitting indeed. We at St. Anthony Main fee l that our development is unique and that we have pursued a high standard of exce llence in our approach to saving one of the landmarks in the City of Minneapoli s. Therefore we feel very comfortable with what we see as an obvious setting for thi s Woodworker show.

There are so many factors invo lved in the creation of these some 75 pieces on display, each one unique to its own creator's persona lity and interpretation . It starts w ith an idea. The process of transforming the idea from the mind, through the tools in the hands, to the fini shed product. We hope you will apprec iate thi s effort as you view and admire the pieces. The most outstanding impress ion you will leave with will undoubtedl y be-quality, of workmanship and des ign. Rare it is, but certainly recognized and treasured w hen it exists.

So , we welcome and sa lute the Minnesota Woodworkers Guild in what we hope w ill be the first of many annual shows to come, and that we w ill have the opportunity to share in this experi ence w ith them aga in .

We w ish you much success!

The Minnesota Woodworkers Gui ld is a group of designers and craftspeop le who work in wood. It was organi zed in 1981 to ass ist woodworkers in our area in surviving as profess ional crafts-peop le and to fulfill many functions that the small businessperson wou ld have difficulty accomplishing on hi s own.

The Gu ild 's purposes are many and vari ed . One, increas ing the public 's sensitivity to finely made wood products and helping qualityconsc ious shoppers choose we ll -made pieces, is criti ca l to we who are the Gui ld 's members. Our pieces are made to last, and we want you to know why that makes us different.

Wood is the startin g place for w hat we do. When a craftsperson uses wood to make anything from furniture to ca rved signs, he is ab le to use the bea uty of the wood as an integral part of his des ign . Thi s approach lends it se lf to natural finishes and spec ial techniques used to highlight the fi gure, co lor, texture and other qualiti es of the wood. Since every piece of wood is different , thi s sort of approach is just not poss ible within the furniture industry, but it gives th e indi vidual craftsperson the poss ibility to crea te with wood as a fine art.

Unfortunately our trade was almost made extinct by mass production. Only recentl y has there been a rev ival of interest in quality woodworking, and thus we as a gro up need to share with each other our ideas, our knowledge of techniques, suppliers , business skill s, wood s, markets, etc. Since many of us are one-person shops, our adverti sing is done much more effectively and econom ica ll y through the Guild 's co llec tive efforts.

The Minnesota Woodworkers Guild has taken a large step in co-produc ing thi s show with St. An thony Main . Through an annual event of thi s kind we hope to bring the craftspeop le and the publi c toegther, You the publi c drea m of beautiful things in wood ; the workworker ca n make it a rea lity. Together w e can again put fine woodworking in its rightful place.

The Minnesota Woodworkers Guild .

The company that has been a part of the woodworking scene in the Twin Cities area for the last 30 years is proud to be a sponsor of the second annua l Northern Woods Show. It is a rare occas ion indeed when Twin Citians get an opportunity to view so many pieces from the area's leading woodworkers at one time.

We at the Woodworkers' Store are glad to be helping the Minnesota Woodworkers Gui ld in bringing thi s enriching experi ence to the Twin Cities.
