WELCOME

Welcome family, friends and loved ones the 40th Annual Family Reunion. It is once

again the time of year that we can meet new family members and catch up with others.

We are so glad you are here! We have some exciting additions for our 40th Reunion.

This year’s reunion started with a Pepsi tour and Fish Fry on Friday, the luncheon as

the main event today, and will conclude Sunday with a Church service at Saint James

Church of Christ, 350 NC Hwy 118, Vanceboro, NC 28586. Church services will be

hosted this year by our family members.

Today, there are many activities planned, that we, the committee, hope that you will

enjoy. This year we will have a college scholarship drawing to award to one or more of

our students in college. We welcome any size donation for this fund. Additionally, we

have included a fun and exciting activity to raise money for our scholarship fund with a

tricky tray.

We have a display of prizes with a ticket bag near each prize. Please purchase tickets

and place the ticket in the ticket bag near the items you hope to win. You can put as

many tickets as you want in the ticket bag to increase the odds of winning. We will have

raffle tickets available during the Dinner Program for you to buy and then drop one or

two or many in the bag or bags of your choice. Below is the cost for a raffle ticket:

$3.00 – for 1 Ticket$5.00 – for 3 Tickets

$12.00 – for 10 Tickets

Reunion History

Our first reunion was held the first Sunday in July, 1974 at the Vanceboro Community

Center. There were approximately 150-200 family members in attendance. Many family

members cooked and served the meal which consisted of fried chicken, barbecue, ham,

assorted vegetables and desserts. There was lively fellowshipping and a commitment

was made to continue to gather annually. The founders who worked so hard to bring

about the first reunion were:

Troy Lee Dawson

Tony Moye (deceased)

James W. Dawson (deceased)

William Dawson (deceased)

Time is our most precious commodity, so use this time to mix, mingle and have fun.

Dawson/Moye Family

DoctrineThe family is the basic unit of society. Families are both personally and socially

necessary. The bible recognizes that every culture needs the family. The family

replenishes the population. It gives its members an identity and provides basic

training for social living. The main concern of the bible however, is to relate the

family properly to God. It is a social unit to which certain responsibilities are

assigned to God.

A. The provision of basic needs

B. The rearing of children

C. Protection

It takes a village to raise a child. There is an assumption that not only is there a

nurturing family but that there is also a supportive community that will help raise

and support the growth and development of caring, productive children that

benefit the community, the family and other loved ones. Warren and Nancy Elks

Dawson accepted this challenge and were united in holy matrimony and blessed

with a beautiful family. Five children were born to them and they produced 41

children and we are still growing.

Our family is an ever changing source of strength and love. With each birth and

every marriage, the roots become stronger and the branches grow. Even when

growing in separate directions, we will always remain as one in the heart.

Warren and Nancy Elks Dawson Family History

Special note to the family: Family history is very important. We encourage

everyone to read this history and become involved in keeping track of family members

and record special events such as marriages, births and deaths. This record is a work in

progress and we would like to add facts and dates to the information we already have.

In researching the history of Nancy and Warren Dawson, the initial

search was of the name "DAWSON,” what does it mean and where did it

come from. The name Dawson is of English origin and literally means Son

of David.

The goal was to discover information on Nancy and Warren Dawson.

In that effort, I did not have much information on Nancy but learned Nancy

was from Pitt County North Carolina. Warren was married to Nancy

Dawson, who predeceased him, the date of her death in unknown. Warren

Dawson was the father of LUCY, NANCY, JOE, STANLEY, and WILLIE.

Warren remarried Maggie after Nancy’s death. Maggie had two

children of her own when they married. Warren predeceased Maggie,

dying on July 15, 1929. Attached is an actual copy of Warren's death

certificate, which list the date of his birth as approximately 1862, his age at

death as 67, his wife as Maggie, that he was born in Green County, and

his father's name was John Dawson.

While no initial or other specific information about John Dawson was

available, John Dawson was the father of Warren Dawson. A further

search shows this John Dawson, age 64, birthplace New Bern, married

(wife’s name not listed), date of death February 16, 1910 and his father's

name also listed as "John Dawson.” We have attached a copy of his death

certificate.

In our continued search, we came across another "John Dawson"

born about 1839 and married to a woman named Roney. This could be the

grandfather of Warren Dawson, however no available information confirms

this. A copy of the federal census information was attached. The above

information concluded the internet search through Ancestry.com. We will

make additional searches and attempt to provide additional information at

our next sponsored Dawson reunion.

RECENT HISTORY:

Some family members were interviewed to obtain information

regarding our most recent history. In interviewing family members, it was

both pleasing and encouraging to learn that Warren Dawson was a hard-

working man; he was a free man having been born close to the end of

slavery. Although Sharecropping was prevalent, he managed to find land in

Vanceboro. This land is in the well-known area called the "Maul Swamp"

road. This property was left to Maggie and the children after Warren's

death in 1929. They later divided the land among the five children, Lucy,

Nancy, Joe, Stanley and Willie after Maggie's death. To this date, several

offspring of the five children continue to reside on the property.

The five children, primarily attended Queens Chapel church. They

were educated in the Vanceboro School for blacks, which only went to the

8th grade, and they obtained any higher education through a school in

Grifton North Carolina. However, most children found it difficult to attend

school even to the 8th grade because of working in the fields.

Sharecropping and Jim Crowism was the practice in the south, it was

extremely difficult and challenging for black people to succeed financially

and/or find land.

Our family members had many God given talents and managed to

land public jobs in several areas. The children of LUCY, JOE, STANLEY

and WILLIE were involved in the following areas: military, farming, auto

mechanics, construction, and carpentry to name a few. Several members

were excellent carpenters. In fact, cousin Joe John and cousin Amos, built

cousin Isabelle Moye's house, in which she continues to reside up to this

day. Based on my research the first person to attend college from our

family was Lula Mae Bond, the eldest daughter of Jake and Willie Mae

Dawson. She became a teacher and actually taught several of our family

members in elementary school in Vanceboro. The first person to obtain a

PHD was Alton Roundtree, the son of Isabelle Roundtree.

Since those initial accomplishments, we have entered almost every

field of study and occupation. We reside throughout the United States and

some abroad but many of our family’s members still consider this area as

home.

I wish to recognize each of the five children and their offspring, please

refer to the attached sheet that list them.

**If any information is inaccurate or omitted, please accept my apology, it was not intentional.

Please inform me of any corrections or additions for future reports.
