The image of Queen Victoria seared into popular culture is one of an older, dour woman, swathed in black, looking as if she never cracked a smile. So when Jenna Coleman portrays her as joyful, it’s jolting. At 18 — still known as Alexandrina and playing with dolls — she’s awakened one morning and informed she is now queen of England. Writer Daisy Goodwin didn’t need to fictionalize much about Victoria’s 63-year reign. As Goodwin notes, women were “the legal property of their husbands, so that makes it even all the more extraordinary that this 18-year-old girl is the most powerful person in the country.” Of course ,Victoria proved up to the challenge, despite being surrounded by relatives with the worst intentions. She musters the calm dignity of a true leader. “I know I am young, and some would say my sex puts me at a disadvantage,” Victoria says, facing her critics. “But I assure you, I am ready for the great responsibility that lies before me.” Victoria recognizes she knows precious little, relying heavily on Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell) as her tutor, confidante and protector.

Her enemies plot to claim she’s insane. She bests them. Victoria may be quaking internally, but she does not blink, those giant blue eyes focus on whoever threatens her. In this case, her Uncle Leopold orders her to marry so the husband can advise her. “I think you forget I am of a royal line that stretches back a thousand years,” she tells him. “Whereas you are the king of Belgium, which did not exist a decade ago.” Victoria marries his son — not because Leopold mandates, but because she loves Albert (Tom Hughes). Though Albert initially balks at being the queen’s consort, he finds his way. When they decide to marry, he says, “For me this is not a marriage of convenience.” To which Victoria replies, “No, I think it will be a marriage of inconvenience.”

Victoria, a seven-part series about the most powerful woman the world has ever known, begins Sunday, January 15, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Local broadcast of Victoria is made possible by Xfinity, Oakland International Airport and Gump’s San Francisco.

Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria (ITV Plc); Jenna Coleman with Rufus Sewell as Melbourne (ITV Plc/MASTERPIECE).

The gap between being inspired and entertained just got smaller. Take the brainy topics of a TED Talk, the informative wit of The Daily Show and the insightful questioning of Terry Gross, sprinkle in a rapt studio audience, and you have Exactly. Hosted by three-time New York Times bestselling author Kelly Corrigan, Exactly is a new KQED podcast and a radio series featuring some of the most creative writers and entertainers of our time. “Leading conversations with smart, funny thinkers is pretty much

my dream,” says Corrigan. “Hosting Exactly is the most fun I’m capable of having.” In the first nine-episode season, Corrigan invites Nicholas Kristof, Anne Lamott, BJ Novak, Jason Segel and others to dig into such big-time ideas as “Is knowing more always better?” and “What’s the deal with humor and the dark side?” Laced with humor, Corrigan’s conversational style and easy connection with her audience bring out the best in her guests.

A conversation series in search of a finer point.

Erica Atreya’s Home Is Where You Hang Your Heart. After 18 years in San Jose, Erica and her husband moved to Folsom so they could buy a house. And in the last couple of years, at least five of Erica’s artist friends also have been priced out of the Bay Area.

With each passing year, artists find it harder to live and work in Silicon Valley. The overheated real estate market is pricing out individuals and nonprofits alike. “Any privately owned space is going to be extremely tenuous for an artist — or for anything that serves the social good,” says Barbara Goldstein, a regional expert on the public art scene. Priced Out, an online series from KQED Arts, explores the crisis, its impact on the community, and what cities like San Jose and Palo Alto are doing to stem the out-migration of the creative people who make the region an attractive place to live for everyone. Stories from the series include:

“Why Palo Alto Subsidizes Studio Rents for Priced-Out Artists” Palo Alto offers subsidized studio space to keep creative artists in an increasingly expensive region.

“When a Shipping Container Becomes a Mecca for Glass Blowing” The Bay Area Glass Institute is making do in a clutch of shipping containers in San Jose while sizing up a nearby warehouse as a future home.

“Priced-Out Artist Moves to Folsom, Leaves Heart in San Jose”Rising real estate prices are pushing artists out of Silicon Valley to places like Stockton, Folsom and Sacramento. But building a creative community beyond the Bay isn’t easy.

Snowbound: Animals of Winter Nature travels to the coldest, snowiest places on Earth to meet the animal survivors of winter.

The climate of the Arctic Circle and Antarctica poses a challenge to anyone visiting, but what about the animals who live there year-round? How do they cope for months on end in frozen wonderlands where temperatures can plummet to as low as minus 50 degrees? In a new Nature special, wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan takes you on a journey to meet the animal survivors of winter — Arctic fox, bison, reindeer,

lynx, weasel, polar bear, penguin, Weddell seal and woolly bear caterpillar — explaining how they adapt to their surroundings and employ clever tactics to survive. Whether they undergo a physical adaptation, use super senses or are just built for frigid conditions, these animals of winter not only subsist, but thrive.

Nature’s “Snowbound: Animals of Winter” premieres Wednesday, January 11, at 8pm on KQED 9.

Days before the inauguration of the 45th American president, FRONTLINE looks back at events during the Obama presidency that have revealed deep divisions in our country and examines the America the next president will inherit. The two-part program Divided States of America offers an in-depth view of the partisanship that gridlocked Washington and charged the 2016 presidential campaign, the rise of populist anger on both sides of the aisle, and the racial tensions that have erupted throughout the country.

Divided States of America airs Tuesday, January 17, and Wednesday, January 18, at 9pm on KQED 9.

January 2

017

On January 16, KQED Kids is being replaced by the 24/7 multiplatform children’s channel PBS Kids, which will offer free live streaming and games via pbskids.org.

Also starting January 16, KQED is reconfiguring weekday children’s programming times to be 6am to 2:30pm on KQED 9 and 4 to 6pm on KQED Plus.

In addition, to help accommodate PBS Kids, KQED will no longer carry V-me as part of its digital package, although V-me will continue to be carried on XFINITY 574 (Monterey/Salinas) and 393 (Sacramento/Fairfield). The channels formerly occupied by V-me — 54.5 and 25.3—have been reassigned to KQED World and PBS Kids, respectively.
