Continued InspirationBy Tom Gonzales

When waiting to capture living comedy legend Bill Cosby in a photo, I met a comedian with a fascinating story. Cheeky Chink was wait-

ing for hours just to shake the hand of Bill Cosby and to thank him for his advice over 40 years ago. “Without him, I wouldn’t be doing comedy,” a choked up Cheeky told me. Inspired at an early age by Bill Cosby’s comedy bit Chicken Heart, Cheeky followed in Bill Cosby’s foot-steps and tried the craft of comedy. He even performed while serving in the US Army in the Vietnam War and continued after he returned.

Cheeky met Bill Cosby while performing at Redd Foxx’s Comedy Club in Los Angeles, CA in the late 60’s. Bill Cosby gave advice to Cheeky and told him to keep on pursuing his dream of entertaining and he could perform at any club he wanted.

Cheeky, who had gotten a reputation “ribbin’” on other people and whose middle name is “Chink”, was on his way down the comedy path.

Those words from Bill Cosby lead Cheeky back to his home of New Orleans where his act Chakula and Chink toured the “chitlin” circuit, which was the name given to the string of per-formance venues throughout the eastern, south-ern, and upper mid-west areas of the United States that were safe and acceptable for African

American musicians, comedians, and other entertainers during segregation and integration. Notable venues included the Royal Peacock in Atlanta; the Cotton Club, Small’s Paradise and the Apollo Theater in New York City. Notable performers included BB King, The Supremes, and Jimmy Walker. Cheeky performed just after integration and lasted for 17 years. In a mixed bag of events, Cheeky survived Hur-ricane Katrina and was transplanted to El Paso, TX where he currently helps the VA Homes and Creative Arts at the VA hospital and still per-forms.

Coming to El Paso must have been destiny for Cheeky because he was able to go “full circle, just to thank him,” – him meaning Bill Cosby, Cheeky’s continued inspiration.

After much heated debate, public outcry and opinion, affiliated Minor league baseball is set to return to the Sun City.

Of course word broke earlier in the week that construction would take things past the April 11th scheduled opening day for the El Paso Chi-

huahuas, forcing team officials to fall back on plan B of using the former home of the franchise in Tucson to host "opening day".

The opening day in El Paso has been pushed back until April 28th, and the wait will be sure worth it once con-structions crews move out the Chihuahuas move in. The natural grass has been growing elsewhere, and is expect-ed to be laid later this month once a crane is removed from what will be the playing surface.

Luxury, modernization, all mixed in with an El Paso twist will make all El Pasoans, baseball fan or not, fall in love what will be the prized jewel of the city. The ballpark will hold around 7,000 more baseball fans. The seating layout is unique with multiple advantage points from about 12 different fan accessible areas.

A back drop of the downtown skyline and Franklin Mountains will bring a brand new breathtaking view of the city from your seat along the third base line or any-where from behind home plate.

Club seats right behind home plate are the best seats in the house so far, but there will be many great seats around the gorgeous ball yard once the Chihuahuas take the field.

The left field wall will be twenty-two feet high, and give El Paso its very own downtown green monster.

A beautiful landscape of the desert southwest will be donned above the left center field wall, adding more El Paso flavor to the elite venue. There also will be a few outfield seats scattered around the outfield walls.

A state of the art multi faucet video board will soar above the right field wall along Sante Fe street.

The video board will have replay, stats, real time scores from around the nation, as well as different tidbits throughout the game. A full time production crew will catch every run, out, and homer displayed on the mon-strous video board.

El Pasoans may nickname the ball park the brick yard with the emphasis of red bricks as a design to match the historic union plaza.

The area behind home plate will feature the brick wall design, which can also be found on the outside once the ballpark in complete. Top of the line suites, press area, and club seats will fill two stories looking outwards to the Franklin Mountains from behind home plate.

Glass will also be featured behind sky boxes that face Juarez, making this stadium an architectural gem some-thing this city has never seen before.

From a player’s perspective, they will be living the Big League life in the Minors.

State of the art locker room, physical training, and prac-tice facilities are what the El Paso Chihuahua players will have at their luxury when they are playing at home.

The Chihuahua’s dugout will be on the third base side, with the adjoining clubhouse built underneath the stadi-um. Two battle tunnels will be available just steps away from the dugout, which will lead right to the field and can get pinch hitters ready in a jiffy.

The Chihuahuas will also enjoy personalized lockers with USB, I-phone, and electronic connections in each locker, giving players the ultimate home away from home field advantage.

Still much work is needed to be done until the first pitch is thrown, El Paso should be excited for what will be something to brag about to our Las Cruces friends.

RIVER is inspired by real life news events in South America regarding kidnappings and sexual slavery that continue to esca-

late. Created and written by Andrew Gomez, Mark Vasconcellos and Matt Valdovinos, RIVER is set on the border of the US and Mexico. Gomez’s character is a police detective who lost his daughter and is trying to find clues to her whereabouts while fighting his own personal demons and drug addiction. There are plenty of colorful characters stemming from drug dealers, businessmen, cops (both dirty and not-so-dirty) as well as other intrigu-

ing players in this web series. Both Vasconcellos and Gomez say the partners are shopping RIVER out to media festivals in an effort to get signed to a major production company such as Netflix, Amazon or Sony. Vasconcellos adds that he would lobby to bring production back to the El Paso/Las Cruces area in order to give back to the dedicated actors and film makers who have supported and worked on RIVER (sans money) and they can “have a real, paying series shooting down here in the border-land.”

El Pasoans like to describe their city as the Mexican Food capital of the World. With the

proliferation of Mexican Food restaurants, it’s likely a legitimate claim. But what some don’t

In particular, Cappettos has been providing “Power Lunches” since it was purchased from the original owner in 1956 by Eddie Da-

vis, Sr. and his wife Alice.

Eddie cooked and Alice waited tables at the orig-inal location at 2716 Montana Street. During the early years the four Davis kids all worked in the restaurant at one time or another. The business, operating in an old Montana Street house that had been refurbished was expanded in 1974 to accommodate growing clientele. In addition to families celebrating special occasions, the restau-rant’s proximity to Downtown El Paso made it a favorite among city government employees and businessman as well as many attorneys and physicians.

When Eddie died in 1983, son Eddie, Jr. took over and continued the growth of the establish-ment with additional remodels and expansion in 1985 and 1999.

Eddie Jr. opened a second location in the North-east that was only marginally successful and soon closed. Another location on Trawood on

the east side of town was opened and it lasted for several years before it too closed. A Westside lo-cation on North Mesa also experienced the same fate.

Eddie made appearances on TV station KDBC’s noon edition from 1991 through 1998 and had many fans. In 1998 he published a cook book featuring recipes from the restaurants and cus-tomers in addition to competition entries.

The Great Recession that began in 2008 and brought financial disaster to many firms didn’t leave Cappetto’s completely unscathed and in 2012, the location on Montana was closed.

But Mr. Davis’ entrepreneurial spirit would not be stymied by a little misfortune and he soon opened in a new location on North Stanton in the “Cincinnati” district. Appropriately enough the new restaurant is named “Nuovo Cappetto’s”.

This new location is only a few blocks from UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso) and is sure to draw customers from the students and faculty. Worthy of mention is the fact that Eddie

realize is that El Paso also has a few fine Italian restaurants too, some of which date back many years. Estab-lishments like Como’s, Bella Napoli

and Cappettos have been in business for 50 years or more.

has been a longtime supporter of UTEP sports.

Nuovo Cappetto’s presents a new style and atmosphere be-fitting the fresh location. Ed-die supplies the classic dishes from the old restaurant along with new recipes. In addition there is a Sunday brunch and live music on weekends.

Many out-of-town visitors are directed or taken to Nuovo Cappettos for the delicious Italian food served there. A particular favorite dish among customers is the Rigatoni Isa-bella. Consisting of Rigatoni pasta of course, the dish has a tasty cheese sauce and the addition of jalapeños gives it a special zest. Spaghetti and meatballs is always a standard as well as Veal Parmesan. But the menu is long and varied so

it will be difficult for a patron to be disappointed.

And, as always there will be Spumoni. Enjoy!

Something you don’t know about, but maybe you should...

“What is said at the barbershop stays at the barbershop.”

What makes it “magical”?The Magic Barger Salon has been family owned and operated since 1989 and has

been in the same area by Ft Bliss.

Customers leave feeling good and this gives something a little extra to the customer. The main client base is generally men sta-tioned at Ft Bliss, but Magic Barber Salon also does female haircuts.

When asked how the salon fits into the “Lifestyle” of the area, Gabriela Saenz, one of the managers and has worked at the salon since 1992, says,
