Good to Go!This means : … we are completing Enterprise SPICE initial release.… we are entering the next major phase of our Enterprise

SPICE project … Deployment and Usage.… we are hoping you will use Enterprise SPICE in your

respective enterprises, and let us know your experience.

This presentation will provide a brief summary of the Enterprise SPICE initial release, and then offer some model usage considerations.

Background – What is Enterprise SPICE?

Enterprise SPICE is about: • bringing together standards and the SPICE assessment

framework to serve the enterprise

Enterprise SPICE objectives:• Integrate and harmonize existing standards as

determined by project stakeholders to provide a single process model to address broad enterprise processes.

• Provide an efficient effective mechanism for assessing and improving processes deployed across a typical, large or small, enterprise.


The Enterprise SPICE ProjectThe Enterprise SPICE Project• First proposed, SPICE 2006 in Luxembourg• Formally launched, SPICE 2007 in Seoul, Korea

Project Structure• Sponsor: SPICE User Group• Advisory Board: governs the project

– 15 members voted in every 2 years• International Project Leader• Volunteer Participants in various roles (board member,

author, assessor, reviewer, …)– Over 120 project participants from 31 countries


Project PhasesEnterprise SPICE is being carried out in 3 initial phases:

• Phase 1: Initial Release: Development of initial Enterprise SPICE Process Assessment Model

• Phase 2: Deployment and Usage: Communications, Training, Guidance Documents, Structured Feedback Mechanisms, Partnerships, Assessment Oversight, Interest Groups, Tool Support, …

• Phase 3: Subsequent Releases: further enhancements and improvements


Development of Initial Release

PRM: In 2008, we developed and distributed the draft Enterprise SPICE Process Reference Model (PRM) for international stakeholder review

• Many hundred comments received and addressed

PAM: In 2009, we developed and distributed the draft process dimension of the Process Assessment Model (PAM)

• Close to 500 comments received and addressed• Some trial assessments conducted

Release: In 2010, “good to go”, initial release ready for use


Scope of Initial ReleaseEnterprise SPICE scope for initial release was

determined by project stakeholders/participants

The following disciplines are addressed:• enterprise management, investment management,

general management,• service management, human resource management• acquisition, quality management systems, • full life cycle engineering for products and services• knowledge management, environment, safety and

security• core supporting disciplines

Sources:FAA-iCMM (baseline, integrating ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 12207, ISO/IEC 15288, ISO/IEC 15504, MBNQA, CMMI, EIA 731, previous CMMs, MIL-STD-882C, MIL-STD-882D, IEC 61508: DEF STAN 00-56, ISO 17799, ISO 15408, ISO/IEC 21827,NIST 800-30).

Process DescriptionsEach Enterprise SPICE process is described by:• Purpose – functional objectives of the process• Outcomes – expected positive results• Base Practices – activities to be performed to achieve outcomes• Relationship Notes* - between and among processes• Work Products – input and output• Mapping* - to the materials used to derive the process description

* Note that Relationship Notes and source mapping are additional new constructs in SPICE models


Using Enterprise SPICEEnterprise SPICE is an innovative approach bringing

together codified standards and SPICE assessment framework to serve the enterprise

Models are abstractions. As George Box has stated, “Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful”

• Enterprise SPICE is a single integrated model: – brings together essential information from source

standards and models, robustly harmonized– customer can use a single model to efficiently and

effectively guide essential enterprise activities

• Relation to sources: – captures sources at appropriate level of detail, no

significant source content lost– users can find more detail if needed or desired by

consulting sources indicated in mapping tables


Relation to other standards and models - 2

• Mix and match: processes from other models can be additionally used for areas not yet included in Enterprise SPICE, or for areas where additional detail is needed

• The capability dimension: Enterprise SPICE provides the process dimension of the PAM. Any SPICE conformant capability dimension can be used with Enterprise SPICE


Usage Contexts• General applicability: for any enterprise that seeks to

improve in an integrated wayLarge or small, public or private, …

• Products and services: for acquiring, developing, operating any type of product or service; not sector specific

• Level of application: for strategic, tactical, or operational issues; for team, project, large or small organizational unit, or overall enterprise

• Selective Use: selected processes may be used as applicable to the business needs of the enterprise


Supporting Assessment and Process Improvement

Major ways to use Enterprise SPICE:

• Internal process improvement: internal assessments to understand process capability for improvement purposes

• Independent capability determination: external assessments/evaluations of process capability for partner or supplier qualification or general benchmarking

• Process definition: using process information as guidance for defining processes


Assessment

• Assessments compare processes of assessed entity to Enterprise SPICE

• Assessment Method: – no particular assessment method is required for use

with Enterprise SPICE– the chosen method should be conformant with SPICE

requirements

its needs, goals, improvement directions and priorities

We have completed a first step towards this vision with our Initial Release, now “Good to Go”
