Background – What is Enterprise SPICE?

Enterprise SPICE is about: • bringing together standards and the SPICE assessment

framework to serve the enterprise

Enterprise SPICE objectives:• Integrate and harmonize existing standards as

determined by project stakeholders to provide a single process model to address broad enterprise processes.

• Provide an efficient effective mechanism for assessing and improving processes deployed across a typical, large or small, enterprise.

The Enterprise SPICE ProjectThe Enterprise SPICE Project• First proposed, SPICE 2006 in Luxembourg• Formally launched, SPICE 2007 in Seoul, Korea

Project Structure• Sponsor: SPICE User Group• Advisory Board: governs the project

– 15 members voted in every 2 years• International Project Leader• Volunteer Participants in various roles (board member,

author, assessor, reviewer, …)– Over 120 project participants from 31 countries

Development of Initial Release

PRM: In 2008, we developed and distributed the draft Enterprise SPICE Process Reference Model (PRM) for international stakeholder review

• Many hundred comments received and addressed

PAM: In 2009, we developed and distributed the draft process dimension of the Process Assessment Model (PAM)

• Close to 500 comments received and addressed• Some trial assessments conducted

Release: In 2010, “good to go”, initial release ready for use

Summary of ContentProcess Dimension: Enterprise SPICE provides the process

dimension of the Process Assessment Model

Categories: 29 processes in 4 categories:

• Governance/Management – processes that set direction and oversee execution of other processes.

• Life Cycle – processes that cover typical life cycle of a product or service.

• Support – processes that contribute to success and quality of all processes.

• Special Applications – provide ways Enterprise SPICE processes might be implemented for a particular application.Note: This construct is an innovation introduced in Enterprise

SPICE

Process DescriptionsEach Enterprise SPICE process is described by:• Purpose – functional objectives of the process• Outcomes – expected positive results• Base Practices – activities to be performed to achieve outcomes• Relationship Notes* - between and among processes• Work Products – input and output• Mapping* - to the materials used to derive the process description

* Note that Relationship Notes and source mapping are additional new constructs in SPICE models

Using Enterprise SPICEEnterprise SPICE is an innovative approach bringing

together codified standards and SPICE assessment framework to serve the enterprise

Models are abstractions. As George Box has stated, “Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful”

How can Enterprise SPICE be used and useful ? • Relation of Enterprise SPICE to other standards/models• Usage Contexts• Using Enterprise SPICE to Support Assessment and

Process Improvement

Page 14: EnterpriseSPICE - Good to Go

Enterprise SPICE –Good to Go - Ibrahim SPICE 2010 – May 2010 14

Relation to other standards and models - 1

• Enterprise SPICE is a single integrated model: – brings together essential information from source

standards and models, robustly harmonized– customer can use a single model to efficiently and

effectively guide essential enterprise activities

• Relation to sources: – captures sources at appropriate level of detail, no

significant source content lost– users can find more detail if needed or desired by

consulting sources indicated in mapping tables

Page 15: EnterpriseSPICE - Good to Go

Enterprise SPICE –Good to Go - Ibrahim SPICE 2010 – May 2010 15

Relation to other standards and models - 2

• Mix and match: processes from other models can be additionally used for areas not yet included in Enterprise SPICE, or for areas where additional detail is needed

• The capability dimension: Enterprise SPICE provides the process dimension of the PAM. Any SPICE conformant capability dimension can be used with Enterprise SPICE

Page 16: EnterpriseSPICE - Good to Go

Usage Contexts• General applicability: for any enterprise that seeks to

improve in an integrated wayLarge or small, public or private, …

• Products and services: for acquiring, developing, operating any type of product or service; not sector specific

• Level of application: for strategic, tactical, or operational issues; for team, project, large or small organizational unit, or overall enterprise

• Selective Use: selected processes may be used as applicable to the business needs of the enterprise

Supporting Assessment and Process Improvement

Major ways to use Enterprise SPICE:

• Internal process improvement: internal assessments to understand process capability for improvement purposes

• Independent capability determination: external assessments/evaluations of process capability for partner or supplier qualification or general benchmarking

• Process definition: using process information as guidance for defining processes

Page 18: EnterpriseSPICE - Good to Go

Enterprise SPICE –Good to Go - Ibrahim SPICE 2010 – May 2010 18

Assessment

• Assessments compare processes of assessed entity to Enterprise SPICE

• Assessment Method: – no particular assessment method is required for use

with Enterprise SPICE– the chosen method should be conformant with SPICE

requirements

Process Improvement - 1Process Improvement Goals: the enterprise determines

its needs, goals, improvement directions and priorities

Enterprise SPICE helps • provides good or best practice guidance for performing

business processes• several processes focus on process improvement• measurement tied to business needs is emphasized

throughout

Page 20: EnterpriseSPICE - Good to Go

Process Improvement - 2Some Enterprise SPICE processes that support

process improvement• Enterprise Governance: for establishing high level goals and

objectives, including those pertaining to improvement• Project Management: for managing the process improvement

effort• Quality Assurance and Management: for checking

compliance and identifying improvement opportunities• Measurement and Analysis: for analyzing measures relative

to goals• Process Definition: for establishing and communicating

process assets• Process Improvement: for typical process improvement steps

and activities

Process Improvement - 3

• Enterprise SPICE does not define the process: the enterprise does

• Making it yours– Add Role and Structure: role assignment,

organizational structure and specific work products need to be added to Enterprise SPICE guidance

– Terminology: terminology needs to reflect the terms and usage in your enterprise

Page 22: EnterpriseSPICE - Good to Go

SummaryIntegrated process improvement• Enterprises requested help in sorting out standards and

models and compliance requirements • Integration is an effective, efficient way to help

The latest innovation in integrated process improvement is Enterprise SPICE

Vision: The Enterprise SPICE vision is to bring together:– standards and standards developers– the enterprise customers we serve, and– the international guidance of SPICE to support achievement of enterprise excellence.

We have completed a first step towards this vision with our Initial Release, now “Good to Go”

Page 23: EnterpriseSPICE - Good to Go

Next StepsNext steps – your part

We hope you use our initial release for enterprise-wide improvement and let us know your experiences

Next steps – our part• Proceed with Phase 2 efforts

Communications, Training, Guidance, Partnerships, Assessment Oversight, Interest Groups, Tool Support

• Concurrently work on enhancements/ improvements We are devoted to continuous improvement

With your help, we intend to provide the best enterprise improvement guidance available
