In too many ways, our economies are geared to the needs of the few, not the many. Billions of people have been left behind without electricity, safe water and sanitation, decent education and health care, or the opportunity of fulfilling work.

Generations have written these off as unsolvable problems. We don’t agree, and neither does the United Nations. With the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN has given us a common language to describe these challenges and a framework for collaboration to tackle them.

Business has a pivotal role to play. To the forefront are social entrepreneurs, using the power of markets, technology and new business models to innovate paths out of the toughest problems confronting our species and our planet. Their enterprises are the engines of not only sustainable growth, but also human dignity and potential. EY Enterprise Growth Services (EGS) exists to accelerate their impact — and progress toward the SDGs — by helping improve their resilience, productivity and capacity for sustainable growth.

Operating at heavily subsidized rates, EGS extends the services of our mainstream business to people and places we wouldn’t normally reach. AfricorpEnabling access to export markets for smallholder farmers in Sudan

Africorp provides a route to global markets for over 4,000 smallholder farmers in some of the world’s poorest and most marginalized communities.

Working capital and processing constraints mean the company is unable to meet demand for its products, which include sesame, hibiscus and Arabica gum. EY was engaged by a consortium of impact investors to develop the robust business plan needed to attract growth capital.

Invest in Africa Addressing the challenges of doing business in Ghana for small and medium-sized enterprises

Working with FMO (the Netherlands’ development bank) and Invest in Africa, we deployed a team of six local and international EY people to help small and growing businesses in Accra improve their resilience, profitability and attractiveness to investors.

TakaTaka Solutions Providing affordable and environmentally

friendly waste management services

Waste management is a major challenge in Nairobi. Government falls short, and private operators charge fees that are inaccessible to two-thirds of the population, only to dump waste in unmanaged sites that cause severe health and environmental problems. TakaTaka views waste as an opportunity, not a problem. It provides affordable collection services and steady jobs, and it recycles 95% of the waste it collects.

EY helped TakaTaka streamline its operations and decision-making.

SolarNowOffering affordable off-grid

energy in East Africa

In Uganda, 82% of the population lives without grid electricity. SolarNow sells and maintains 50W–5kW solar systems, bringing affordable light and power to low-income homes and businesses across the country.

EY helped SolarNow improve the motivation and retention of its salesforce with a comprehensive HR and pay strategy.

Frontier Markets Reducing the use of dangerous, polluting kerosene in rural India

Frontier Markets is tackling the problem of energy access in rural India by building a last-mile distribution and maintenance network for reliable, affordable solar products.

EY worked with Acumen’s Lean Data Services team to help Frontier Markets build scalable, cost-effective means to continually gather customer feedback.

Looking ahead

Over the next six months, we’ll be working with:

• M-KOPA, a leading solar home systems provider that has created over 2,600 jobs and brought affordable, off-grid solar power to more than 375,000 homes in East Africa. M-KOPA’s customers will save US$280m in energy costs over the next four years. We’ve been engaged to help the business streamline its operations and reduce customer support costs.

• Svadha, which tackles the problems of access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene at the base of the pyramid in India through an innovative model built on village-level entrepreneurs. We’ve been engaged to help develop a business plan to attract growth capital.

• The West African Rice Company, which develops currently unused but fertile farmland in one of the most impoverished areas in the world. WARC employs smallholder farmers on a salaried, one-year training program, boosting their output and income. We’ve been engaged to help the business implement stronger operational and financial controls and processes.

As EGS expands, we’re looking forward to working with more of the world’s most impressive social entrepreneurs.
