For decades, EY has supported the entrepreneurs who drive sustainable economic growth. Enterprise Growth Services (EGS) is an extension of that commitment, focused on the social entrepreneurs who change lives and livelihoods at the base of the pyramid. Its social enterprise model brings the best of our people, services and experience to organizations that wouldn’t ordinarily be able to work with us. Since the programme’s launch two years ago, EGS teams have supported 27 social-impact businesses across sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia and Latin America, helping them improve their productivity, profitability, and ability to scale. Our clients
use the power of the market to improve health, livelihoods, education and access to energy in their communities. They are the engines, not just of sustainable growth, but of human potential and dignity. We’re proud to work with them, and to give our extraordinary people exceptional experiences that last a lifetime. Over the next few pages, we’ve profiled ten EGS engagements which demonstrate the range of work we’ve done, and clients we’ve supported. EthioChickenCreating food security and jobs in Ethiopia
Nearly half of Ethiopia’s children are stunted by poor, protein-deficient nutrition. Ethiochicken produces highly fertile, disease-resistant chickens and sells them to smallholder farmers in Ethiopia through a unique and scalable distribution model.
EGS helped them select their first Enterprise Resource Planning system and find more than 100 efficiency improvements.

Access to Capital for Rural Enterprises (ACRE)Enabling market access and job creation in India and Bangladesh
ACRE, a consortium of international NGOs, finds and supports rural enterprises with high socio-economic impact.
EGS helped two ACRE-backed social enterprises develop the business infrastructure and credible growth plans they need to attract impact investors.

CAT LogisticsGrowing a logistics business to support west African economies
Land-locked countries rely on open, effective supply and trade routes. CAT Logistics provides vital freight services and helps clients like the World Food Program navigate complex customs regulations, keeping life-saving goods flowing. EGS helped CAT strengthen their governance, consolidate their financial operations and improve their cashflow across Benin, Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger and Ghana.

Clean TeamTransforming lives through safe, hygienic
and convenient sanitation
Around 2.6 billion people live without access to a toilet. Clean Team is tackling the sanitation crisis head-on.
EGS has worked with Clean Team for 12 months on a range of business development and operational improvement projects.

FonkozeEmpowering rural women in Haiti through microfinance
Fonkoze provides microfinance to rural women entrepreneurs, helping them grow the businesses which feed and educate their families.
EGS helped Fonkoze position itself for continued growth by working with the management team to enhance the bank’s finance function.

Invest in AfricaConnecting Ghanaian businesses to multi national corporations
Multinationals operating in lower-income countries want reliable local business partners in their supply chains. For SMEs, multinationals offer steady revenues and a platform for growth. The challenge is connecting them.
EGS helped Invest In Africa design, build and launch a non-profit business, the African Partner Pool, which has already screened and accredited hundreds of local SMEs on behalf of 12 multinational companies.

JibuBuilding life-saving clean-water
businesses in East Africa
Every minute of every day, a child dies from the effects of drinking dirty water.
EGS helped Jibu set up the replicable financial and operational infrastructure they need to grow fast. That means more clean, affordable water in the hands of parents at the base of the pyramid.

EGS is proud to help entrepreneurs across economic sectors create steady jobs.
We worked with DDP, a leading outdoor advertising company, to improve their financial reporting and resilience — an essential step in enabling further growth.

MyAgroRevolutionising farming in West
Africa to enable growth
MyAgro’s focus is moving farmers beyond subsistence farming and helping them increase their income and buffer against economic shocks.
We helped them strengthen their financial management and reporting, which means they’re better able to support thousands of farmers to improve their lives and livelihoods.

Stamp out Sleeping Sickness (SOS)Tackling life-threatening disease in Uganda
Every year in Africa, sleeping sickness causes 30,000 deaths and the loss of 1.5 million disability-adjusted life years*.
SOS is building a network of vet businesses across Uganda — the only sustainable way to suppress the cattle-borne parasites which cause the disease.
An EGS team spent seven months helping these businesses reduce costs, improve customer focus and profitability, and position themselves for collaborative growth.
* The disability-adjusted life year (DALY) is a measure of overall disease burden, expressed as the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability or early death.

Looking ahead
Over the next six months, we’ll be working with:
• Makera Cattle who help farmers across Zimbabwe improve the quality of their herds, creating higher and steadier incomes for rural families. We will help prepare the company for investment and growth through standardizing core operational processes; improving financial management; advising on suitable ERP packages; and improving staff management and development.
• Virtual City who develop and deliver mobile software solutions to the supply chain and agribusiness industry in Africa, benefitting thousands of smallholder farmers. We will be working with Virtual City to help them develop an enhanced business and pricing modelling capability, in order to manage the organisation’s increasing scale and complexity and maintain profitability.
• EdenTree who connect farmers in Ghana to local markets, increasing incomes and job security. We’ll help them prepare for further rapid growth by supporting their selection and implementation of a new management information system.
