Innovative rubber and silicone in the world of FRPs

Kraiburg developed a new generation of rubber compounds for the

direct bonding between rubber and FRPs.

- Direct bonding without any adhesives and in the same process step

- Can be processed with autoclave, press and resin infusion

processes (RTM, VAP)

Applications:

- Impact resistance – by integrating rubber within a defined

construction up to five times of energy can be absorbed

- Improves splintering and crash behaviour

- Integration in a sandwich lay-up, vibration dampening will be

improved

- Integration of a non-slip surface

- Integration of a flexible function

The Key-Benefits for this development are the easy processing and

optimisation for prepreg-production-process. This product offers a

wide range of new applications and a prolonged product life.

Additionally Kraiburg offers new silicone compounds for mold

making.

- Raw silicone for difficult dimensions of FRP-parts, like edges or

undercuts (pressure pads)

- Raw silicone with special stiffness for mold making (vacuum bags)

Key-Benefits:

- Curing time of the silicone at a temperature of 80°C in approx.

25 minutes without pressure (depends on the compound)

- Handling like prepreg

- Repairing of cured vacuum bags is possible

Metawell GmbHmetal sandwich technology

Metawell® is a patented lightweight panel out of aluminium. Its ingeniously simple structure (it reminds that of corrugated cardboard) makes Metawell® a very light but rigid sandwich panel with trendsetting characteristics.

Two cover sheets are connected to the corrugated core material using a special hot-melt adhesive in a continuous process. The core material itself is very rigid in one direction through the geometry, taken from nature (like a shell). With just one coversheet glued to the corrugation an easily formable mate-rial emerges which is called “Aluflex”. It can be perfectly used for curved elements and backside reinforcements.

Since the pre-treatment is already on the coils which are used for cover sheets and corrugation a good corrosion protection is also available for the core material. 20 years experience with the product justify the worldwide use of Metawell® in series and single projects in the areas trans-port (automotive, trains, shipbuilding), construc-tion (façade systems, radiant ceilings, interiors) and industry (housings, platforms). The company Metawell GmbH does not only manufacture the sandwich panel Metawell® but also develops and produces solutions of consequent light construc-tion in close cooperation with its customers.

Munich University of Applied SciencesCompetence Center „Smart Composites“

The Competence Center “Smart Composites” of the University of Applied Sciences in Munich performs research und development in the field of composite materials mainly for the automotive, wind energy and healthcare. In cooperation with industry part-ners different sensors have been developed that can be structurally integrated. A new approach is based on the electrical conductivity of the rein-forcing carbon fibre, which is used to gain a strain sensor based on piezoresistivity. The electrical connections are made at the ends of the fibre. The change of resistivity of the fibre subjected to mechanical load is measured. Thus to some extend the carbon structure itself can be used to measure its own state of strain. Especially, if several carbon sensor fibres are arranged to intelligent sensor meshes within the composite structure. Investiga-tions show that these carbon fibre sensor meshes can be used to improve the reliability and can lower the manufacturing costs of composite structures. At the JEC 2009 different samples are presented.

The department of Polymer Engineering of the University of Bayreuth is one of the leading re-search groups in Germany in the field of polymer composite materials. Our core competence lays on understanding and optimizing the interrelationship among Structure-Processing-Properties, with acti-vities including thermoplastic and thermosetting composites. Our department combines physical and chemical fundamental knowledge to bring innovative smart materials into real world applications, such as ener-gy efficient out-of-autoclave fast curable matrices and class-A surface composites.A number of modern industry-relevant manufac-turing methods are available, such as injection moulding compounding for novel thermoplastic hybrid composites, and resin transfer moulding or autoclave processing for high performance carbon/glass reinforced thermosets. The characterization of the large spectrum of properties belongs to our daily work. This includes thermal analyses, morphology investigations, quasi-static mechanical testing and analysis of fatigue behaviour.By building a bridge between pure science and industrial needs, our department is proud to be a reliable collaborator on the development of the new generation of composite materials with our industrial partners.

The Cluster Neue Werkstoffe is the Bavarian net-working platform for innovations in new materials.

The Cluster Neue Werkstoffe aims at strengthening the interconnections in the field of new materials between Bavarian competences and players in industry and sciences – from materials develop-ment and processing up to their application in the manufacturing of components.

This is done by establishing a Bavarian-wide constantly updated und pro-actively organized platform for information and communication, in close cooperation with regional material-focused networks, other cluster platforms and the manage-ment located at Bayern Innovativ GmbH.

With meetings at companies or institutes and fo-rums or workshops dealing with specific topics, the Cluster Neue Werkstoffe brings together decision makers and key members of the materials business and enables target-oriented exchange of infor-mation and experiences. By way of this dynamic dialog of all participants, cooperative projects are formed, which are supported and accompanied by the management of the Cluster Neue Werkstoffe.
