Architecture ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities Description
Technology Vision and Strategy
• Define the future state of the
enterprise’s business processes,
organization, information, technology,
and applications to achieve business
vision and satisfy strategic
requirements
• Identify the gaps between the current
and future state (e.g., business
processes, organization, information,
technology, applications), and develop
recommendations
• Assess alternatives and identify the
best recommendations based on a
holistic view of the
costs/benefits/dependencies associated
with all potential alternatives

Architecture ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities Description
Technology Life Cycle Management
• Identify Emerging Technology
• Define standards that state which
technologies are used for what purpose
and introducing and retiring
technologies
Technology Procurement• Sometimes responsible for obtaining
emerging software and managing
vendor relationship
Methodologies
• Specify how business and technical
systems are to be designed and how
designs are to be documented (e.g.,
using UML)
Life Cycle & Process Standards
• Define life cycles (e.g., recommended
rapid applications development
methods) and processes for common
tasks (such as project management,
reuse, metrics and testing)

Architecture ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities Description
Skills Planning
• Although skills planning is not often a
core architecture function, an
architect’s perspective on the future of
technologies and processes can be
valuable in identifying training and
recruiting needs.
Data Architecture• Develop Enterprise Data, Master Data
Management, Data Warehouse, Data
Mart, Shared Data Services strategy
Interface and Modularization
• A key architectural task is "city
planning" — defining the partitioning,
interfaces and relationships between
major elements of the IT infrastructure
