Where do I go when I arrive?

. Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)Outpatient Department, on the 5thfloor, Riverside Block, ChristchurchHospital.

. You will be registered and your detailschecked.

need to see the Anaesthetist. There may besome tests required, ego blood test, chest )j:-rayor photos, etc.

The Nurse will co-ordinate yourpreadmission and explain the day's proceed-ings, check your medical history, outline theoperation and the after care required.

What do I bring?. All current medication.

. Depending on age, some people mayhave an ECG (heart test). If this is

required, you will be sent a letter to go tothe ECG Department on the ground t100rnear the main entrance before your Pre-Admission Appointment.

The House Surgeon will check that youare fit and well for your operation. You willbe asked about previous hospital admissionsand operations, medical conditions and anyallergies to medication or food.

The Surgeon will explain the operation andask you to sign a Consent Form givingpermission for the operation.

. Any relevant x-rays that you keep at home.

Tea and coffee are available. If you arediabetic or have small children with you, it isadvisable to bring a snack. Snack machinesand cafeterias are available in the hospital.

Please ask hospital staff where these arelocated.

Medications?

Why do you need to attend aPreadmission Clinic TheAnaesthetistwill generally see you on the

day of your operation. Occasionally they mayneed to see you at the Preadmission Clinic.

Please feel free to ask questions about youroperation.

If you are currently taking Warfarin, Aspirin,Solprin, Aspro, Aspro-Clear, Codis, or Cartiaor if there is Asprin or Salicylic Acid writtenon the medical label, please contact the ENTPreadmission Office, Phone: 364 1466. Thesemedications may need to be stopped prior tosurgery.

. To review your medical fitness for anaes-thesia and surgery.

. To provide you with information aboutwhat to expect before, during and after thesurgery.

Before leaving, please check with thePreadmission Nurse to see if there are anychanges to your planned operation and toensure that everything has been completed.

What happens at thePreadmission Appointment?

At the time of your appointment, you willmeet a Nurse, a junior Doctor (HouseSurgeon), and the Surgeon who will mostlikely do your operation. Some patients may

How long should myPreadmission Appointment take?

Most surgical procedures require an overnightstay in hospital with a post-operative period oftime off school/work. If you require furtherinformation regarding this, please ring (03)364 1466.

Who should come with me?Please allow up to 4 hours. This may some-times take longer if more tests or investiga-tions are required. .

. A parent or legal guardian is required tosign the Consent Form of any childunder 16 years.

Note: If the parent or legal guardian cannotattend the Preadmission Appointment, theyshould contact the ENT Preadmission Nurse to

make other arrangements. If this is not done,the operation may be postponed.
