ensuring high quality, low salinity water for edible oils refiningchallenge

Water quality and reliability are absolutely essential in the refining of crude edible oils such as palm oil. At Integrated Oil Industries’ (IOI) new plant, located 16 km (10 miles) south of Egypt’s Suez city, the client wanted to ensure that the quality of their boiler feedwater and cooling tower water, key to refining operations, was never compromised. In addition to reducing TDS, they also want to minimize wastewater discharges.

After an extensive technical evaluation, SUEZ Water & Process Technologies was chosen to satisfy the demanding water treatment requirements for this edible oil refiner’s brand new factory.

SUEZ’s electrodialysis reversal (EDR) technology was chosen for this application because of its high salt removal, high water recovery—achieving a minimum recovery of 80% of the feed as product water and low pretreatment requirements, particularly when compared with reverse osmosis (RO). SUEZ’s EDR technology also has the advantage of being extremely robust to feedwater variations in the canal water.

IOI, like many SUEZ clients, benefited from SUEZ’s broad systems integration expertise, which goes beyond a single product or technology. Multimedia filtration was combined with EDR to achieve optimal water purification results for the boiler feed and cooling tower waters, absolutely critical to palm oil refining.

For IOI, the SUEZ brand translates into total water confidence and reliability, irrespective of variability in feedwater.
