ENSLINJEManual II
The installation of old works
Lotta Hannerz at Eskilstuna Art Museum14/3 - 23/8 2020
ENSLINJE
"To think? ... To think! Is to loose the thread." Paul Valéry
This exhibition is an excavated past, a portable present and an imagined future. The past, the present and the future "mise en abyme" inside each other.
The past" consists of works borrowed from collectors and museum and works leading upto the present.
A condition for "the present" was that it could be packed into a suitcase as a travelerbetween here and there, between then and now. The new works therefore had to be lightweight and fold-able.
"The future" is a hunch about a prospective exhibition.
Over time, I have become interested in memory and how we remember. And that hasbecome worse with the data age. We have more information, but our memory is nowexternal to compared with oral and often nomadic cultures where the memory is internal.Complex memory systems and multifaceted tales allow these cultures to carry vastamounts of information about the practicalities of flora and fauna, cycles, naturalphenomena, medicine, technology and crafts as well as their own history generationsback in time. This visual map* brings a different perspective than our dissected andclassified reality. In this information age it is easy to see only the pine needle and not thewhole forest.
Looking back at my own work has made me realize how unreliable the thought is. Whatseemed crystal clear at the moment might later turned out to have a completely differentmeaning. Sometimes I blush when I realize how narrow-minded my own perspective wasin that moment. The idea is usually much more ambiguous than that. One cannot rely onone's own interpretation. Many thoughts also returned. Like echos. They fall in line witheach other, but with a certain displacement. As single lines not fixed in space but in time.We never step into the same river and but however clear the water is, even the straightestline will deform.

(Swedish for piloting) - Using fixed points called "range markers", to form a "leadingline" or "range axis" along which to navigate safely.
- French term, originally derived from heraldry, is a formal technique of placinga copy of an image within itself, often in a way that suggests an infinitely recurring sequence. An image in an image. Literally means means "placed into abyss".
* - A strategy of memory enhancement which uses visualizations of familiar spatialenvironments in order to enhance the recall of information. In human development, stories wereused to remember everything that had to do with our survival. In Australia, the indigenouspeople have song lines where the whole landscape is a memory map.
