Program Notes

Hans Abrahamsen (b. 1952)Wald (2009)Duration: 18 minutes

Wald is, in a way, a series of variations from the beginning of my woodwind quintet Walden (1978). This thematic idea is very simple - a rising call of a fourth and the response in other voices. This idea is repeated several times, but because the call has a slower pulse than the responses, the process leads to them changing order.

In Walden I borrowed the title from the American philosopher Henry David Thoreau, who, in the middle of the eighteenth century, in a little wooden hermit house at the bank of the lake Walden pond, wrote the book Walden of his life and time in the forests. Here he experimented living for two years in order to come closer to nature and to see if it was possible to live simply without all the unnecessary needs created by society. The book is filled with poetry, but is also cutting and critical of society. In my piece Walden, I tried to search for the same simplicity, handling the most simple material, but at the same time trying not to lose the poetry.

Wald is a twin piece to Walden, but also to my former piece Schnee.

Robert Schumann wrote in 1848-49 a wonderful piano piece, Waldszenen. He wrote this collection of short pieces with beautiful titles like Einsame Blumen, Vogel als Prophet and also Jäger auf der Lauer, just a few years before Thoreau wrote his book Walden. For them the forest is the magical romantic place that gives a spiritual insight to man, but also from where we get our food through hunting. For me the forest still has this magical quality and Wald has scenes with a hunting horn that calls (I many years ago played the magical “Waldhorn” and remember playing in the forest near my home), flocks of birds that when agitated take off, and there is also the sense of a hunt followed by galloping horses.

– Hans Abrahamsen

John Luther Adams (b. 1953)The Light Within (2007)Duration: 13 minutes

Sitting in the silence of their meetings, Quakers seek to “greet the light within”. In his work, the artist James Turrell (a Quaker himself) says that he aspires to address “the light that we see in dreams”.

On a crisp autumn day sitting inside Meeting – Turrellʼs skyspace at PS1 in Queens, New York– I experienced my own epiphany of light. From mid-afternoon through sunset into night, I was transfixed by the magical interplay of light and color, above and within.

Over the hours the sky descended through every nameless shade of blue, to heaviest black. The light within the space rose from softest white, through ineffable yellows to deepest orange. Just after sunset there came a moment when outside and inside met in perfect equipoise. The midnight blue of the sky and the burnished peach of the room came together, fusing into one vibrant yet intangible plane...light becoming color, becoming substance.

Out of this experience came The Light Within. A companion to The Light That Fills the World (1999/2001), the harmonic colors of this new piece are more complex and mercurial than those of its outward-looking predecessor. Within this more introspective sonic space, the light changes more quickly, embracing darker hues and deeper shadows.– John Luther Adams

Conductor, educator, and writer Michael Lewanski is a champion of contemporary music and older repertoire alike. His work seeks to create deeper and more engaged connections between audiences, musicians, and the music that is part of their culture and history. He has been on the faculty of the DePaul University School of Music since 2007, where he conducts the Concert Orchestra, Ensemble 20+ (20th century and contemporary music), and works frequently with other ensembles. He is conductor of Ensemble Dal Niente, a Chicago-based new music group.

Michael has guest-conducted Lyric Opera of Chicago, chamber ensembles from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Orchestra, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), the Chicago Chamber Musicians, the Fifth House Ensemble, and many others. He has led over 100 world premieres. He was the Conducting Assistant for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago from 2010 to 2014. At the 2012 Darmstadt Summer Courses, Ensemble Dal Niente won the prestigious Kranichstein Music Prize under his direction. Michael has an extensive discography as both a conductor and a producer.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, he studied piano and violin; he made his conducting debut at age 13, leading his own composition. At 16, he was the youngest student ever accepted into the conducting class of the legendary Ilya Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Michael subsequently attended Yale University. His post-Yale education featured conducting study with Cliff Colnot and Lucas Vis.

Michael’s schedule for the 2016-2017 concert season includes concerts with DePaul School of Music Ensembles, local and national concerts with Ensemble Dal Niente (the Ear Taxi Festival, a California tour, a return to June in Buffalo), guest conducting engagements throughout the US, recording projects, various festival appearances, and academic presentations and conferences.
