This morning your local guide takes you to
the immense 15thC Cathedral, beautiful
Reales Alcarzares, the Girala Tower and
the former Jewish ghetto of Barrio de San-
ta Cruz with its much loved flower be-
decked, wrought iron balconies. After
lunch you are free to enjoy one of the
world’s most alluring cities in your own
way. You may choose to visit the Roman
site of Italica- one of the earliest Roman
settlements in Spain with its huge amphi-
theatre and fine mosaics.

Travel to lovely medieval Toledo today
arriving in the afternoon. This majestic
city was declared a UNESCO World Her-
itage site for its extensive cultural and
monumental heritage as well as its histori-
cal co-existence of Christian, Muslim and
Jewish cultures. You trace the vestiges of
this cultural synthesis on a guided tour
visiting Plaza de Ayuntamiento and the
beautiful cathedral, the old Jewish quarter,
the church of Saint Tome with its famous
El Greco painting the ‘Burial of Count
Orgaz’ and Saint Juan de los Reyes.

Seville to Grenada
Travel to the final bastion of Moorish
Spain today, the magnificent city of Gre-
nada. In the afternoon you visit the lovely
Albaycin Arab quarter with your local
guide. This section of the city clings to the
hillside opposite the Alhambra and
amongst its cobbled alleys is where you
can feel Granada’s Moorish ancestry most.
Here classic Carmens with intricate Moor-
ish decorations and gardens of vines and
fruit trees surrounded by high walls, line
the stone lanes. A traditional Paella dinner
is arranged in a local restaurant tonight.

Day 16 Sunday 12 May
Al Hambra
It is said that no journey through life is
complete without having seen the Al
Hambra. Relish a guided tour today of
the magnificent Alhambra Palace and
the Generalife Gardens. The exquisite
Moorish architecture and breathtaking
gardens are beautiful beyond belief. In-
deed the name Generalife is derived
from Yannat al Arif meaning gardens of
lofty paradise. You will long remember
this earthly paradise. (Visit time is ad-
vised on tour). Enjoy leisure in Grenada.

Day 17 Monday 13 May
Granada - Ronda
After breakfast you travel along the fab-
ulous Pueblos Blancos route- the white
washed villages of Andalucia drive,
stopping in the pretty villages of Grazal-
ema and Arcos de la Frontera before
arriving in Ronda the ‘Queen of the
white washed villages’. On arrival you
see the striking Puente Nuevo bridge
which spans the cavernous gorge of
Ronda, then settle in to your lovely hotel
for the next two nights.

From medieval Plaza de la Villa to vi-
brant Puerta del Sol, the compact heart of
old Madrid is steeped in a rich history and
delights all with its most colourful sights.
Take a guided tour this morning down the
wide tree lined avenues, taking in lively
Puerto del Sol, Gran Via, Paseo de la Cas-
tellana, the Cibeles Fountain, the Plaza de
Espana and the Plaza Mayor. You then
have a guided audio tour of the interna-
tionally renowned Prado Museum which
houses a phenomenal collection of master-
pieces by Spanish masters Goya, Ve-
lazquez and Zurbaran and numerous Euro-
pean painters such as Ruebens, Titian and
Bosch. Enjoy some free time in the after-
noon before enjoying a welcome dinner

Madrid to Salamanca
Travel to Salamanca and pause for lunch
in the fabulous walled city of Avila. The
impressive 12th century walls which en-
compass the old town are said to be the
finest medieval remnants in Spain and
along with the old town itself are
UNESCO World Heritage protected. En-
joy lunch and photo opportunities here
before arriving in beautiful Salamanca.
Noted for its outstanding architecture and
gastronomic and religious culture, Sala-
manca is a fine university town with a
magnificent old quarter. Best of all its
treasures have not been exposed to mass
tourism, preserving an authentic charm.
Enjoy dining at your leisure tonight at a
local Tapas bar or café.

Salamanca to Porto
Tour Salamanca this morning then con-
tinue on a scenic drive to Ciudad Rodrigo
to admire the historical architecture or
sample local produce in the fortified old
centre. After lunch you cross the nearby
border into Portugal and arrive in Porto
where you check into your hotel for the
next three nights. This romantic city of
ornate baroque churches, medieval relics
and beaux-arts buildings all crammed
along the banks of the River Douro is
bathed in sunlight and a relaxed ambi-
ance. Like a living museum, this far flung
outpost of the Roman Empire is a treas-
ure for those seeking an unspoilt Europe.

Spend the day discovering Porto’s
UNESCO World Heritage designated
historical core. Sights include the 14thC
San Fransisco Church with its extraordi-
narily lavish golden interior, the Cais da
Ribeira medieval waterfront district, Por-
to Cathedral, Avenida dos Aliados, the
Bolhao local markets and the Soares dos
Reis Museum. Sample a local eatery this
evening at your leisure with gastronomic
delights such as seafood fresh from the
Atlantic, wines and ports from the Douro
Valley vineyards, smoked meats, piquant

age protected Douro River Valley today.
This most scenic outing encompasses a
boat cruise to admire the famous vine-

Porto to Coimbra and Obidos
Depart Porto this morning on a leisurely
drive to the sophisticated university town
of Coimbra, the former medieval capital
of Portugal. Today its historic buildings
still tumble down the hillside above the
Mondego River. Have an informative
walk with a local guide in its atmospher-
ic core, visiting the old university which
has been Portugal’s finest for five centu-
ries, the renaissance Se Nova Cathedral
and Se Velha de Coimbra the old cathe-
dral. You also visit lovely Igreja de San-
to Antonio dos Olivais church. The after-
noon and evening are at your leisure.

Coimbra to Obidos & Lisbon
From Coimbra this morning you spend a
relaxing day in quaint Obidos where its
classic crenelated fortification encloses a
maze of cobbled streets and white wash-
es houses decorated with summer flow-
ers. A short drive this afternoon takes
you to Lisbon, Europe’s second oldest
city which exudes a delightful old world
ambience and its own distinctive charac-
ter. Here you check in to your hotel for
the next three nights.

Your city tour of Lisbon today begins
with a visit to Belem to see the Jeroni-
mos Monastery and the Tower of Belem.
Try the famous ‘Pastei de Nata’ Portu-
guese custard tarts when you pause for
lunch and drive along Liberdade Avenue
and Pombal Square. In the afternoon you
walk through the genuine old Alfama
district- the historic Moorish quarter and
the oldest in Lisbon. Enjoy the enchant-
ing, steep cobblestone lanes etched in
deep history before ascending to the Cas-
tle of Sao Jorge from where you have
magnificent views over the River Tagus
and the city and sea below. This evening
you stroll through the white washed

After breakfast you set out for Sintra
and visit the romantic Palace of Queluz
situated atop one of the highest peaks in
the Sintra Mountains. The palace is
comparable to Versailles for the sumptu-

There is time to stroll through the intri-
guing streets and to browse the antique
and handicraft shops and tea rooms.
Return to Lisbon via Cabo de Roca the
most westerly cape of continental Eu-
rope and the Estoril Coast road with its
panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Lisbon to Evora
Enjoy a relaxed morning in Lisbon be-
fore travelling to Evora at noon, where
you check in to your character hotel.
Evora is like a city museum dating back
to Roman times. It is UNESCO World
Heritage listed and a fascinating desti-
nation from which to journey through
history. Tour this afternoon with a local
guide to see its elaborate medieval ca-
thedral, the Templo Romano, Roman
Baths, the Silver Water aqueduct and
the Sao Joao- the first governor of Por-
tuguese Tangier’s family pantheon.
