The chance to visit Bali hasbeen a dream of mine formany years. The idea wasformed after spending a month inJakarta and the Indonesian island ofEast Irian Jaya, New Guinea over 15years ago. It was the beautiful pictures I saw of Bali back then, thatlived in my mind all these years thatmade me want to go back.


Everywhere youll find stalls filled with cloves, rice, ginger, galangal for spiritual offerings, spa treatmentsand, of course, meal preparations.


Ordered chaos is the order of the day


A New Invitation

What brought me to Indonesia this time wasan invitation to teach Chinese Fan Dance as aGuest Artist at Spa Village Tembok Resort, aproperty of the prestigious yTL Hotel Groupof Malaysia.

But before heading up the coast to Tembokwhere it is fairly remote, I ventured to the littlevillage of Ubud, for I was told it was really special. I was not disappointed.

To be candid, this was not theperfect chamber-of-commercewell organized, time managedarranged trip. This trip wascompletely different, and muchmore gratifying. I winged itfrom start to finish.

On the way to Ubud

The cab journey from Denpasar InternationalAirport to Ubud took about ninety minutes.From Denpasar to Ubud, I passed open-airworkshops with beautiful Balinese furniture,Hindu temples, and what seemed like an un-ceasing line of little shops and stalls. I was in-trigued to see people sweeping frenziedlyoutside every door.


I checked into a boutique resort called GrandSunti Resort, which was really nice and not tootouristy. I quickly stashed my baggage, bothguratively and literally, and went to the out-door spa, which I had seen behind walls on apath leading through Koi ponds. I chose thetraditional body scrub called Boreh, a divineblend of cloves, rice, ginger and galangal.What a beautiful treatment, provided by a Ba-

linese woman who showed such a respectfulgentleness, a touch liken to the most loving ofhuman kindness.

Venturing out into the small winding streets ofUbud, I found many little shops, selling all sortsof fascinating things, particularly Batik sarongs.These shops sat next to Hindu temples, whereincense and oerings are given up throughout

the day. Its a very spiritual place, retaining traditional Bali culture as well as local customsand beliefs.

One morning, I wandered into the Arma Museum and Resort Spa, where I immediatelygazed upon a magical wonderland coveringseveral acres of the most beautiful Balineselandscape and architecture imaginable.

While in Ubud, the Hindu spiritual festi-val of Galungan was taking place, whichis a holiday celebrating the victory ofdharma over adharma symbolizing thevictory of good over evil. For ten days,Balinese families will entertain and wel-come prayers, oerings and ceremoniesto cleanse and balance the inner andouter energy on the island. I absolutelyloved watching the Barong dances,which went from temple to temple ineach village.

Ill put this out there now,traveling all the way to Baliis worth it!

The time, the money,whatever the sacrificerequires.

There is something aboutthe vibe and the way thelifestyle plays out over there.

I wanted to stay longer to experience the cer-emonies of Ubud, but my invitation at Spa Vil-lage Tembok Resort was waiting. The next day,Tembok sent a driver to pick me up, and we setout for the long drive to the north end of Bali.

It was an exciting three-hour journey aroundthe prodigious volcano of Mount Batur to getto the Spa Village Tembok Resort. We traveledalong twisty narrow roads over mountains andthrough valleys, passing through countless lit-tle villages. In this area of Bali, you forego thecrowded big named resorts.

My Arrival

There are no close-by villages, no stores andInternet is a very slow dial-up aair. yes, uphere on the north end of the island, its justthe purity of a glorious unspoiled beach anda fabulous resort!

The Spa Village Tembok Resort is one of thenest retreats you could ever visit. The invit-ing and gracious hospitality and rst-classservice were in evidence from the moment Iarrived, when I sat in the huge open-air reception area and received a refreshingglass of Jamu, a Balinese health tonic. Next,my feet were cleansed along with a foot andneck massage at the same time. What a gracious welcome after the long drive.

Situated in an oasis of peace and tranquility,with just the gentle soundtrack of thenearby ocean, Spa Village Tembok Resortpromotes a deep sense of balance. you simply cannot be uptight here. The quietsolitude brings you immediately into thesense of calm needed for a two-week retreat.


Visitors are mostly from cities inthe E.U. and Southeast Asia they come here to escape theirofficial life.

The all-inclusive 5-star resort serves threemeals a day on the beautiful Balinese verandathat overlooks the ocean, and while dining atnight, you can see the distant lights of shingboats dotted about the horizon as they gatheryet another harvest. Mued chanting and incense emanating from the nearby templesadd to the serenity.

During the day, the resort oers all types ofactivities, including my Chinese Fan Danceand Bamboo Bo Sta martial arts classes,which went quite well. The young Balinesemen were some of my biggest fans, andloved that I was bringing Kung Fu to theisland.

The resort is an enchanting paradise, due inno small part to Sharron Hopley, the resi-dent manager. Shes totally at one with theenvironment and runs the whole show withincredible ease. I cant praise her or her stahighly enough.

This recipe is to be made with fresh whole Tamarind,Turmeric and Palm Sugar.

Peel the turmeric skin and wash it. Slice the turmeric intothin slices. Boil t he sliced turmeric, tamarind, palm sugarand salt. Cool it down for a bit, then store in bottle. Servewarm or chilled.

ReflectingI reected on this very special experience over thenext few weeks. The deserted beaches, thebeauty of the foliage, the beautiful gentle people,the free divers catching sh for dinner, the smallshing boats lined up along the beach and thespaaaa - - all this made the experience. If every-one on earth were able to chill in this quiet soli-tude, we might well have world peace.

nick, you have had an amazing journey with body bliss how did your connection to botany and plants originate?

Everyone in my family was deeply connected with nature, andwith plants in particular. My grandfather, an Air Force ocer andkeen amateur botanist, was my rst teacher. Following him insearch of rare plants as a child, I began to absorb his passionand understanding of the plant world. Among his many inu-ences on me, his interest in Asia, comparative religion, and theZen tradition have stayed with me all my life.

My love of plants eventually led me to completing my degree inBotany at Oxford University under the tutelage of Dr. Barry Juniper.

When going to a spa, we often see aromatherapy as an addon to a massage or treatment. I always thought that spasshould oer the aromatherapy as a standard part of a treat-ment. do you have an opinion on this?

Absolutely this is one area where I have a lot of opinions! I thinkof Aromatherapy as one of the three pillars of spa the othersbeing touch and water. People sometimes think they are over-whelmed by, or allergic to, aromatherapy when often they arethinking of unpleasant experiences they have had when smellingsynthetic or poor quality oils. True aromatherapy is a subtle experience and in a spa treatment, if the therapist includes anaromatherapy element early on, the healing eect of the sessioncan be greatly enhanced.

What can you share about how to feel the energetics of plantsand what do you think a person can gain from having a connec-tion with plant life?

Plants reect beauty and practicality in every aspect of life. Isometimes spend time with one plant aroma to the exclusion ofall others trying to become sensitive to how that aroma aectsmy thinking, my feeling and my physical state. My interaction withplants, and especially their essences, enriches my whole day and,I feel sure, benets my well-being. I cook with essential oils, travelwith essential oils, sleep with essential oils! For me, aromatherapyis an integral part of a healthy, happy and abundant lifestyle.

I can see where your life path is what has inuenced the linesyou have created. Im thinking that the chakra line naturallycame from your years in India? how did that part of the jour-ney become an inuence?

One of the reasons for me being in India was my interest in med-itation and the esoteric. These interests led me to Sedona, andblossomed even more as a result of being there. This fascinationwith exploring chakra energies as a way to understanding theself was shared with my original Body Bliss partner, and theChakra Balance Vibrational Oils were the rst creation of BodyBliss. This line also uses the vibrational qualities of gemstones toattune and protect the oils.

My time in India also led to a profound appreciation of Ayurvedichealing, and as a result we were commissioned to make tradi-tionally prepared herbal oils for the Chopra Healing Center inthe US. Our Ayurvedic products are an extension of my deep feltlove of India.

Scents are so evocative, and justas the smell of ripe mango or coconut can transport us to tropicalclimes, I am sure that the scent of wild sage might communicatethe inspiring spaciousness and clarity of the Southwest to some-one lucky enough to breath in its scent in Thailand.

With being in the southwest I can imagine you really took tothe dierence in plant life here.

The Southwest was quite an adjustment for a boy from rainy Eng-land! Over the years I have fallen in love with its grandeur andthe tenacity of the plants that survive here. The local Indian cul-tures of course knew the potential of every plant of the desertand canyon, and these plants became the inspiration for our Native Botanicals collection. Extracts of white sage, prickly pearand wild chaparral are just some of the healing botanicals weregularly use.

I can see where this has signicance within the story you toldme about the barefoot doctors from china. I love this story,can you share this knowledge?

After the Cultural Revolution in China healthcare provision wasprimarily only available in urban areas. To address this ChairmanMao instigated a program to train rural farmers in basic health-care infection control, basic medical procedures, midwifery andthe like. They were given a set of medicines, both Western andChinese, that they would dispense. Often they grew their ownherbs in the backyard. It is interesting that although these Bare-foot Doctors, as they came to be known, still spent about halftheir time involved with farm work, about twenty percent of themlater went on to enter medical school.

Anyway, I have always loved this idea of people going barefootfrom town to town spreading wellness and compassion. I spend


much of my time travelling from spa to spa, visiting communitiesof spa therapists, and spreading my enthusiasm for the therapeu-tic power of botanical aromatics. I envisaged a character that Icalled the Barefoot Botanist who spends his time coaxing thegoodness from plants and sharing it around. He is a lot like me!This led to the development of our Barefoot Botanist collection,home to some of my favorite healing herbs such as calendula,chamomile and lavender.

Is there a nal product line that brings it all together?

Last year we took time to re-invent and re-package everythingwe do. As part of this process we lighted on the words Inten-tional Aromatherapy as the best descriptor of what Body Blissas a company does. Everything we do involves the use of trulytherapeutic aromatherapy oils, and everything we make, everyformula, contains a specic intention for a positive outcome fora persons well-being. This led to our Intentional Aromatherapycollection. It contains many of my favorite blends, from the extremely exotic and luxurious I LOVE blend of sandalwood,white magnolia and neroli to the precisely practical mlange ofimmortelle, lavender, marjoram and wintergreen in I PLAy.

now, you are 14 years with this journey developing body bliss- what will be your focus now in the future?

Our aim is to continue to strengthen the educational reach ofBody Bliss and to nd partners that can help spread these incredible products around the globe. Just What You Need After a Great Hike

As hikers come from around the world, we provided Asian-style foottreatments on the expansive deck of the lodge, which looks directlyat Longs Peak, the highest in Rocky Mountain National Park. Hikerswere able to replenish tired feet while they enjoyed wine, cheese, andcrackers. The focus was to oer a spiritual time-out, a rejuvenationof the mind and body at the end of the day.

Beating Cancer - Again!

Sally continued, After being cancer free forseveral years, I once again received the devas-tating news that another tumor had developednext to my Carotid Artery. This was 4 1/2 yearsago. The tumor was increasing in size everythree months, and if it did not stop, I wouldhave to have a very serious operation to re-move the tumor, which was growing on a majorartery.
