partment for fourteen years is Ken Helms, a talented amateur photographer/editor out-side of his professional role as Fire Marshal. Ken first became interested in photography in his teens, when he worked with Southwest Radio Church on their monthly newsletter and magazine. While employed in their graphic arts department, he learned the basics of black and white photography, developing, and half-tone re-production. Southwest Radio Church also provided him with opportunity to travel to take pictures on a Middle Eastern tour to

Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Italy and a few other Mediterranean cities. He made a sec-ond trip to northern Europe/Scandinavian countries. After working with Southwest Radio Church, Ken became an assistant to a wedding photographer. While Ken dis-covered that shooting weddings was not his favorite avocation, he did enjoy gaining knowledge of and the experience of us-ing a Hasselblad large format film camera. Though Ken Helms has taken a class taught by one of his favorite photog-raphers, mentor, and friend, Mike Klemme,

(whose professional work can be seen in the city’s administration building and in other lo-cations in Enid), he has otherwise been self-taught with minimal formal training. This minimal formal training is quite surprising when you see his firefighter photos have the striking quality of the iconic “Raising the Flag at Ground Zero” by Thomas E. Frank-lin, and the frozen emotion of the “Two Minutes of Silence” Peter O’Neill painting. Working as the Assistant Fire Mar-shal for five years and then another four and a half years as the Fire Marshal, part of

Did you know that the City of Enid Recycle Center accepts old computer moni-tors, appliances, tires and even used oil? It’s true, and it gets even better! The oil can be further recycled and used to heat certain City of Enid facilities. But with these benefits, many times the City of Enid gets asked, “Why don’t we have a re-cycle pickup service?” Good question! To be frank, recycling is a busi-ness. At different times, the market deter-mines a need for certain recyclables, thus making it a profitable commodity. Many of us have lived in larger metropolitan areas where a recycling pickup ser-vice was offered. This service was offered for different reasons: 1) The higher the popu-lation density, the more recy-clables collected. 2) Shorter hauling distances to the recy-cling centers. This presents two problems for the City of Enid: Picking up the recyclables and hauling the recyclables to a central recycling point. In order to pick up your recyclables and pick up trash daily, the City of Enid would have to in-crease personnel and most likely would have to purchase more trucks and more fuel for the job. So the City of Enid came up with a great alternative in order to make your tax dollars go farther and recycle at the same time. A drop off center.

Those wishing to recyclecan easily take their items to the drop-off center located near downtown Enid. Not truly the ideal spot for a drop off point, the City of Enid is considering alternative locations for this center. Not interested in dropping off your recyclables? Keepin’ Enid Green is a great privately owned company that for a small charge will pick up your recyclables weekly. Check out www.keepinenidgreen.com for more information.
