In our comment piece last November we touched on the subject of “reshoring” suggesting that, while there was a lot of noise about returning

manufacturing to a company’s home country, there was little evidence of this happening to any large degree.

Well all that has changed with the publication of the results of a study in the UK that suggests that one in six manufacturers have either switched production back home or are in the process of doing so. And it appears the UK is not alone as the same trend seems to be happening in several parts of the World.

It seems that many of the factors that made off-shore manufacturing popular are no longer so attractive. Undertaken by the UK Government’s Manufacturing Advisory Service, the survey found 15 per cent of companies were returning production – a much higher number that those who shipped production offshore during the same period.

More than a quarter of those surveyed suggested concern over the cost of offshore production was the principal reason for reshoring. They have seen local labour costs rise significantly coupled with hefty increases in the cost of shipping. Next on the list was a desire to increase quality by having more control locally, followed by a need to reduce delivery times as demand increases. These three factors

– cost, quality and availability – would seem to make reshoring a “no-brainer” and it will be interesting to see how reshorers fare as they bring production back.

During the coming months, we will try and get some feedback from electronics companies that have taken the reshoring route and report back to you with the results.

All this is potentially good news for the electronics production industry in those countries where manufacturing is returning. This key sector of our industry has been through difficult times in recent years, but things seem to be improving. Last year’s Productronica in Munich was a successful and very busy show and, as global demand increases, the need for more manufacturing capacity will also increase.

To provide all the latest information for the electronics production industry, we have just launched a dedicated site - http://production.electronicspecifier.com

Visitors get the chance to read about the latest developments in component manufacturing, component placement, inspection and test as well as PCB technology and manufacturing and process software. There is also a section on 3D printing. Make sure you send us your news.

Read and enjoy.

Paving the way for industrial adoption of thermocompression bonding for 3D IC manufacturing, imec and Besi have announced a partnership to develop a thermocompression bonding solution for narrow-pitch die-to-die, and die-to-wafer bonding.

Aiming to increase functionality and performance of next-generation ICs while reducing footprint and power consumption, 3D IC technology involves the stacking of multiple dies into a single device. The technology is key in enabling the next generation of portable electronics, such as smartphones

and tablets, which require smaller ICs that consume less power.

One of the key challenges facing 3D IC manufacturing is the development of high-throughput automated process flow for narrow-pitch, high-accuracy die-to-die and die-to-wafer bonding. Flip chip and reflow soldering, which are currently combined for bonding, require lenient bonding accuracy on large bump pitches (around 150-50µm bump pitch). Bump pitches need to further scale down to 40-10µm to realize a sufficiently high performance.

Collaboration could pave way for adoption of 3D IC thermocompression bonding

Featuring an adapter glued to the FFC/FPC, the HF512S high speed connector series expands the Non-ZIF connector family and extends Yamaichi’s FFC/FPC connector offering. The addition of the HF512S to the Non-ZIF connector family primarily means quick, reliable assembly of the FFC/FPC without opening/closing a flap or drawer as conventional zero-force connectors require.

The adapter glued to the FFC/FPC ensures the safe handling of the FFC, because the FFC is inserted into the connector with the adapter. This makes it impossible to insert at an angle, mistake the polarity, or

damage the FFC/FPC contact pad. The adapter engages audibly and perceptibly into the connector housing, locking the board side to the cable side. Pulling the FFC out is possible after pressing the adapter. That permits high extraction forces to be guaranteed, resulting in a very secure connection.

In order to reduce the overall noise of the detector/amplifier module, the capacitance connected to the amplifier has to be as small as possible. LASER COMPONENTS’ H0 series of avalanche photodiode (APD) receivers make the connections as short as possible to make the parasitic capacitance as exceptionally low as the junction capacitance of the company’s low-noise Silicon and InGaAs APDs (SARP-Series and IAG-Series).

The simplest way to use a detector is with a receiver circuit, where quality is judged according to the amount of noise produced. The company’s Silicon and InGaAs APDs offer the optimal pre-requisites for detectors. But for the entire system, amplifier noise is the dominant source of noise. When developing the H0 series of APD receivers, LASER COMPONENTS aim was to achieve low noise performance with high responsivity without the need for a thermoelectric (TE) cooler (with only a thermistor required for stability).

Supporting riders when braking hard in bends, the Bosch MSC motorcycle stability control could prove to defuse thousands of critical situations and significantly bring down the number of fatalities in bends.

If the rider brakes or accelerates too hard, MSC reduces

the brake pressure or the acceleration to a level that allows the motorcycle to be steered much more safely. The system was first applied at the end of 2013, in KTM’s 1190 Adventure and 1190 Adventure R. Now ADAC has recognized this major safety improvement: on January 16, 2014, it awarded

the Bosch MSC its 2014 Yellow Angel in the “Innovation and Environment” category. “MSC makes even the tightest bend safer,” commented Gerhard Steiger, president of the Bosch Chassis Systems Control division.
