In 2011, Dayna Pool visited MiriSarawak to work with PDK indeveloping a staff trainingprogram as well as setting uptherapy treatments for childrenwith physical disabilities.

During this visit, it became veryapparent that the greatest need was foressential therapeutic equipment.

“Children of all ages were being carriedin by their parents, siblings orgrandparents. There was simply noother option to transport their children.

"Many of these children would spendthe entire day on the floor lying on theirback because they did not have asupportive seat and wheelchair toenable them to be upright and providea means of transportation and mobilityin their own home and city.”

The lack of equipment due toinsufficient financial support andexpertise means that children are oftenconfined to their home and cannot goto school to learn like other childrentheir age.

Get Equip'd will facilitate financialpartnerships between PDK and theirlocal community. The establishment ofthese partnerships are crucial as thiswill enable the purchase of essentialequipment not just for now but wellinto the future.

Many allied health and medical studentstrained in Western Australia havelimited hands on opportunities to worktogether in an interdisciplinary way.

Get Equip’d provides the opportunity forstudents to be supported with theirlearning in the most practical way, promoting health professionals to worktogether for a common goal.

Forming a partnership with positivemutual outcomes - Get Equip’dcombines the needs from both Miri andWestern Australia. For the children andfamilies in Miri, it means receiving thesupport they so desperately need whilststaff at PDK develop the necessaryskills to ensure long-term sustainability.

For our students in Western Australia, the hands on experience will ensurethey have the necessary skills that willeasily translate to enriching our therapy

services and will directly impact andimprove the care of people withdisabilities in Australia.

The combination of years of experiencein this field, training program andstrategic plans makes the partnershipand goals of Get Equip’d in Miriattainable and achievable.

We envisage PDK being self-sufficientwith the children receiving theequipment and support they sodesperately need.

Students choosing to do their practicumthrough Get Equip'd will have a trulyunique, memorable and positiveexperience, coming home with skillsthey would not have otherwise had.
