You may recall a previous Summation article where I mentioned several reasons the practice of law is the best profession in the world, and I still believe it. However, we should be humble enough, nay, realistic enough, to remember that while we tend to get the majority of the credit when we succeed on behalf of a client (however that is defined by the circumstances) we rarely do it alone. Paralegals, legal secretaries, and law clerks are key components of an attorney’s ability to practice. And we cannot forget the Vice President of First Impressions, the receptionist. My guess is that one or more support staff played a pivotal role in helping you meet that deadline. I recently had to file something with mere hours’ notice, and no one worked harder than my assistant to get it done. These are good opportunities to make mention of our appreciation. To the support staff in a law office of any size, please know your work is appreciated. Your role is important and the attorneys know that. But I have a suspicion that while it may not be an employee, you too have people upon whom you relied to reach your goal at one point or another. The fact is, very rare is the single person who truly does it all, and that is with good reason: History and personal experience teaches that going it truly alone is arduous and sometimes ineffective. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!

I f I’m lucky, this Summation article will go down in the annals of the

EBA as having the cheesiest title ever. It was meant to pique your

curiosity enough to get you past the first line. If you’re still reading,

it’s working. But wait, there’s more…

As attorneys, we are professionals. We are perceived, rightly or

wrongly, in a certain light and held to a certain standard. We should

feel genuinely honored when people ask for our advice. You may recall a previous

Summation article where I mentioned several reasons the practice of law is the best

profession in the world, and I still believe it.

However, we should be humble enough, nay, realistic enough, to remember that while

we tend to get the majority of the credit when we succeed on behalf of a client

(however that is defined by the circumstances) we rarely do it alone. Paralegals, legal

secretaries, and law clerks are key components of an attorney’s ability to practice. And

we cannot forget the Vice President of First Impressions, the receptionist. Between the

first telephone call and the closing of a file at least one other person played an

important role in working with the client for most of us. Attorneys are the ones who hear

“thanks for everything you did” or “you do good work!” But we know it could not have

happened without the help of our team.

To the attorneys, think of a time when you were under a deadline that was imposed on

short notice, or which you conveniently allowed to sneak up on you. My guess is that

one or more support staff played a pivotal role in helping you meet that deadline. I

recently had to file something with mere hours’ notice, and no one worked harder than

my assistant to get it done. These are good opportunities to make mention of our

appreciation.

To the support staff in a law office of any size, please know your work is

appreciated. Your role is important and the attorneys know that. Your work is not as

glamorous and likely receives less credit than it deserves.

These thoughts are not restricted to law firms. Corporate counsel offices, legal aid, and

the courts all rely on a team approach. The machines may look different, but they all

have working parts that integrate to work effectively.

Finally, to the rare, true solo fort-manner who do not have help somewhere along the

line: If you have made it this far in the article, thank you. Perhaps much of this does not

apply to you. But I have a suspicion that while it may not be an employee, you too have

people upon whom you relied to reach your goal at one point or another. The fact is,

very rare is the single person who truly does it all, and that is with good reason: History

and personal experience teaches that going it truly alone is arduous and sometimes

ineffective. To bookend this article with clichés, “None of us is as smart as all of us.”

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE EBA BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

The mission of the Evansville Bar Association is to enhance the practice of law, cultivate professional excellence, promote high ethi-

cal standards and uphold the honor of the profession.

The primary role of the EBA’s Board of Directors is to set policy, oversee finances and determine the viability of programs and

projects. To do this, a member of the Board of Directors is expected to:

Attend Board meetings regularly and miss a Board meeting only for a very compelling reason.

Attend with regularity EBA and Evansville Bar Foundation activities and social functions and positively consider donation or

financial requests in keeping with personal capabilities.

Promote the involvement of members of their firms/companies/agencies in EBA activities and functions.

Serve as a “Board Liaison” to at least one committee, section or program, providing leadership, direction and communication

for and between the Board of Directors and the relevant group.

Conscientiously review written material presented to them in their capacity as members of the Board of Directors.

Be active in the affairs of the Evansville Bar Association and diligent in the performance of all duties during the term of office.

If you are interested in serving on the EBA Board of Directors, please submit a letter of interest to the EBA Nominating Committee, 401

SE 6th Street, Suite 101, Evansville, IN 47713 or e-mail [email protected] by March 31, 2017.

EBA activities, committees, and sections.

By: Judge Smith and Magistrate Corcoran

The Volunteer Lawyer Program serves clients in our district through a variety of staff and volunteer efforts all designed

to maximize the availability of civil legal aid services. Most of these services are done in partnership with our friends

at Indiana Legal Services or the Legal Aid Society of Evansville, often with pro bono volunteers. Through the

operation of self-help clinics, such as our monthly family law clinics in Vanderburgh, Daviess, Pike, and Spencer

Counties or our annual participation in Homeless Connect, our staff does its best to come to members of the bar for

full representation only in those matters that must have an attorney to ensure their case is completed

correctly. Molly Briles recently stepped up for just such a matter, immediately accepting and filing for a client

referred by one of our local domestic violence shelters. This client would not have been able to navigate the legal

system without a lawyer and Ms. Briles’ work is just one of many examples of pro bono service in our district. So,

when VLP comes to you asking for help on behalf of a client, please consider assisting our justice system by offering

your services.

Also this month, VLP wants to congratulate Katherine Rybak, long time pro bono volunteer and ILS staff attorney, for

being honored by Cornell Law School with its Alumni Exemplary Public Service Award.
