Heath Gunn appointed as CEO

We are pleased to let you all know that Heath Gunn was appointed CEO, ratified by the Board of Trustees on 30th January 2017. Heath started his new position on 1st February this year.

“I was honoured to be offered the opportunity to become the new Chief Executive of Enham Trust, in February. There are exciting things on the horizon from Enham Trust and I look forward to the challenges that will no doubt come up along the way. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of helping to bring the whole community closer together and have recently met with the Rev’d Val Gagen and the Parish Council members to start talking about how we can work more closely to make the village a great place to both live and work.

I’d love to see us having village fete’s and events that mark significant points in history that see the whole of Enham, Village and Trust, coming together more regularly and would look to you all to get involved over the coming months, should you wish to.

Kenny and the team are working hard to act on the feedback you have given us recently through the survey and we will work hard to improve the service you, as tenants, can expect and receive from us.”

Welcome to the Spring edition of the Enham Echo. Over the last 6 months we have seen a lot of changes here at the Enham Trust and hopefully you will not have experienced any changes to the services you receive from us.

We now have a new CEO and the organisation has gone through a restructure to make sure we have the right people running the charity, giving you all best value for money.

I am also pleased to announce that the Enham Board have just agreed our biggest investment in our stock for some years, with an emphasis being on external decoration.

Following the results of the resident’s survey we have earmarked funds to improve footpaths and signs around the village as well as using volunteers to help decorate your homes where you may not be able to do so. More information on this will follow.

The Scrutiny Panel are a group of Enham tenants whose aim is to make sure that Enham Trust residents are at the heart of the landlords service. They work in partnership with the housing team to monitor and improve the quality of the service, its performance and aim to drive up housing standards. Their role is to take an independent and objective view of the landlords service and consider (by scrutinising) service performance against local and national housing standards.

Property Maintenance

What are your maintenance responsibilities as a tenant?• Internal: Replacing plugs and chains on baths, basins and sinks. Trying to clear blockages in basins, sinks, baths and toilets. Repair and replacement of internal door furniture, locks, latches and coat hooks. Replacing floor coverings supplied in kitchens and/ or bathrooms and all other fixtures and fittings. Adjusting doors when you have fitted new carpets. Replacing of filters for cooker hoods if applicable.

• Gardening: Maintaining general garden paths but not those giving the main access to your front and back doors. Maintaining trees within the boundaries of your property. Repairing any fencing, steps, patios, sheds or other garden features we did not originally provide. Replacement of clothes lines or post (except in communal areas or part of a supported living scheme). Keeping all gully grids and gutters clear of leaves and other rubbish (not blocks of flats or bungalows).

• Electrical: Replacing light bulbs, electrical fuses, electrical plugs (not sockets) and plug fuses to your own appliances. Testing and cleaning of smoke alarms and replacing batteries.

• Other: Care and provision of electricity, gas and water meters. Draining of the water supply when away from home (such as on holiday or in hospital) during the winter months from October to April. Maintaining a garage, driveway or shed which has been constructed by the current or previous tenant. Cleaning windows (not flats over 2 stories). Replacing any lost keys.

Village of the Year Success for Enham Alamein!Back in October 2016, Enham Alamein was awarded Highly Commended for ‘Village of the Year 2016’ and ‘Excellence in Localism for Enham Trust’ for their visionary work in Enham Alamein.

Well done to everyone in the village coming together, maintaining and improving their properties appearance!

Doug Saunders“I refer to myself as a ‘child of the settlers’. My father, Walter Saunders, served this country in the war and was held as a prisoner for 4 years. After a recommendation from a friend, my father applied for housing in Enham Alamein and they were the second family to move into the village in 1919, actually in the Cottage on the Green as it’s now called.

Enham Industries back then offered soldiers a wide range of skills to train in, including boot repairs, basketry, upholstery, wood work, painting and decorating and probably more.

My father trained in boot repairs, and became the village cobbler. He was asked to stay as a permanent resident in Enham Alamein. I remember my father always said how “Enham gave me my life”.

I was born in 1928 and I have lived in Enham Alamein ever since. I went to the nearest school in Smannel and I remember the community spirit and the parent run clubs, including scouts and brownies, and held parties throughout the year.

At the age of 14, I left school and started work at the Carpentry workshop for Enham Industries. I worked there for 4 years until I joined the Royal Engineers at 18. I married my wife Margaret and

we moved into our own home when I was 25. We had 3 children and we raised them in our home where we still live.

I was always happy at work; I worked for 51 years at Enham Industries. I worked as Carpentry Foreman up until the workshop closed 15 years before I retired. I then went onto work as a QA in the cabinet shop as management in the packing and transport department, until I took full retirement. A short while later I was then asked to take on the role of Rent Collector, a job I thoroughly enjoyed and can still recall the names of all the village residents today! This brings my total service to Enham to 68 years; Enham’s been good to me. When I retired in 1993, I arranged for a reunion for the settlers children and 250 people travelled from all over the world to attend. It was a great experience.”

This month is special for Doug, as he celebrates his 89th year in the village! We appreciate all the hard work Doug and his family has provided throughout the years; from the day his father moved here in 1919, working at Enham Industries and serving on numerous committees and raising money for the village. Doug now spends his time serving as a member of the Tenants Scrutiny Panel. A big thank you goes to Doug and his family!

‘Fly-Tipping’ and what is it?Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste. It can be liquid or solid in nature and can vary in scale significantly from a single bin bag of waste to large quantities of waste dumped from trucks.

If you see fly-tipping, you can report it to the Housing Team at Enham Trust on 01264 324800 and Test Valley Borough Council on 01264 368000.

The Legal Bit; Anyone who produces waste has a duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, to ensure that it is disposed of properly. Therefore a person may be guilty of an offence under section 34 if their waste has been found to be dumped, even if the dumping was carried out by someone else. The duty applies to both businesses and householders.

Door Step CrimeHampshire County Council’s Trading Standard Service would like to remind residents to be wary of people calling at home offering to do home maintenance, gardening, roofing, driveways, etc. These may be rogue traders looking to make money out of you in return for very poor work.

Ready, Steady, Veggie!National Vegetarian Week is between 15th – 21st May! The aim of this week is to celebrate and promote delicious foods that can be eaten as a vegetarian.

Working with our nutritional advisor, Diana Smith, National Veggie Week will be a chance to learn about ingredients, the nutritional benefits and how to cook vegetarian recipes easily. Residents at Enham Trust will be supported to chop, cook and create tasty vegetarian meals. This is will coincide with the Village Lunch on Thursday 18th May, so please do join us!
