Engrossing Saga 2017 October 8-14, 2017 (begins with dinner on the 8 th and ends with breakfast on the 14 th ) 2017 celebrates the 31st year of the Spencerian Saga, and as a special addition to our Traditional program, we are offering a most unique weeklong event: The Engrossing Saga. This program is only offered every 3 years. The focus of the week’s instruction will include techniques of Engrossing: the beautiful art of lettering presented with numerous embellishments such as border designs and many ornamental accents. Used primarily for testimonials, resolutions, recognition certificates and corporate scrolls, the practice of traditional Engrossing has become a lost art, with a few opportunities for interested students to learn the vintage techniques practiced more than a century ago by our master penmen. Through this program, the door to this learning opportunity will once again be open. Participants will be taught such skills as Engrosser’s text lettering, developing acanthus leaf patterns, incorporating the “magic” of filigree, creating decorative “title letters”, employing stippling and cross-hatching, gold leaf application, painting with gouache and watercolor, toning background areas with watercolor and pastels, designing useful and attractive borders, and of course, learning the valuable aspects of layout and composition. Ornamental penmanship will also be presented in the techniques of Off-Hand Flourishing as it was used to create flowing borders, cartouche designs, scroll patterns and decorative title flourishes. And, as always, participants will be able to study numerous original penmanship specimens from past and present master penmen. The Engrossing Spencerian Saga is truly special; there is no other program offered anywhere that presents all the aspects of Engrossing in such detail or depth. Previous experience in Engrossing is not required, but knowledge of basic calligraphy will be helpful. The dates for the Engrossing Spencerian Saga are October 8-14, 2017. The fee for this unique program is $750 [includes registration and instruction]. Due to the special nature of the Engrossing Saga, we are allowing a maximum of 18 students. Increased attendance is anticipated which may exceed room availability at the Lakehouse Inn. In the event that you register and this occurs, Andrea Bushweiler (our Innkeeper) will assist you with the information about the alternate lodging at the new Geneva State Park Lodge, a modern 110-room hotel facility one block away from the Lakehouse Inn. Please remember that all individuals wishing to attend the Engrossing Spencerian Saga MUST register separately with Harvest Crittenden for the week-long program and also with Andrea Bushweiler for

Please remember that all individuals wishing to attend the Engrossing Spencerian Saga MUST register separately with Harvest Crittenden for the week-long program and also with Andrea Bushweiler for

accommodations (meals and lodging).

Registration and Accommodations Registrants will lodge at the Lakehouse Inn – the restful Bed-and-Breakfast Inn located on the shore of Lake Erie. The Inn is also the site of our program. Regardless of lodging location, meal service for all participants will be available at the Lakehouse Inn provided arrangements are made in advance. Upon registration with the Inn, Andrea Bushweiler (our Innkeeper) will inform you of fees for lodging and meals. Please remember that all individuals wishing to attend the Spencerian Saga MUST register separately with Harvest Crittenden for the week-long program and also with Andrea Bushweiler for accommodations (meals and lodging) at the Lakehouse Inn. A workshop store will be open at the Saga each day for those who wish to purchase handcrafted wooden penholders, books, and other workshop supplies.

The cost for the Engrossing Saga program is $750.00. In order to register, a minimum deposit of $250.00 must be sent to Harvest Crittenden to reserve your place as a participant. PLEASE CHECK WITH HARVEST FOR AVAILABLE STUDENT SPACES PRIOR TO MAILING IN YOUR FORM. In addition, you must also contact Andrea at the Lake House Inn and submit a deposit to her for meals and lodging. The year 2017 marks our 31st year of bringing the Saga to those who wish to share this rich legacy of penmanship. I hope you will consider joining us! For further information, feel free to contact me.
