Estemed friends of Magna Graecia,

the Social Year began on 31 July 1915 with

the Fellowship participation to the

“Archaeology Meetings” organized at

Herculaneum by Suor Orsola Benincasa

University along with the International

Herculaneum Studies Center.

On September 10, in Torre del Greco,

Chairman Casale joined the ceremony,

together with a group of Fellowship members,

of the “Leopardi Literary Prize La Ginestra”

(The Broom) – set up by the local Rotary

Club to honor prof. Gilberto Lonardi, a

scholar of international renown on Giacomo

Leopardi, the second greatest Italian poet of

all times.

On Saturday, September 19, a group of

District 2100 and District 2120 members

attended at Paestum the XXXV Edition of

Magna Graecia Colonies‟ International Prize,

on the theme “Paestum - Research and

Studies”.

On Sunday, October 11, there was an

excursion to Velia, the ancient Greek colony

of Elea – now one of the jewels of Cilento

National Park.

The propitious geographic location of Elea,

lying on the old trade routes between Graecia

and Etruria, made it rich and powerful. The

remnants of this city stand now in the territory

of Ascea.

A Meeting at the “Yacht Club Marina di

Stabia”, organized by the local Rotary Club,

was held on November 27. It dealt with the

Rotarian program “Youth Exchange”, and was

attended by a group of members led by

Chairman Casale.

On January 26 – up on invitation by the

Rotary Club Isola di Capri – a guided tour of

the ancient “Pasta Factory” of Gragnano

(near Stabiae) and the annexed “Pasta

Museum” was enjoyed by Club members and

visitors alike. On the occasion, the importance

of pasta in the „Mediterranean diet‟ received

due attention.

On March 16, in Pompeii, the opening

ceremony of exhibition“Myth and Nature -

from Greece to Pompeii” was attended by a

score of Fellowship members and friends.

On April 16 the conference “Climate change

and resources of renewable energy”,

organized by Rotary Clubs of Vesuvius‟

surroundings, saw the presence of Chairman

Casale and several members of the Pompeii -

Villa dei Misteri Rotary Club.

On day 28 of the same month the group

attended the Conference “Pompeii

Excavations by the Spanish Archaeological

Mission”, sponsored by the Suor Orsola

Benincasa University of Naples.

On May 14 in the Duomo of Ravello (the

famous mountain top city of Amalfi Coast)

the presentation took place of “The Noblemen

Seat of Ravello”, a book authored by

Chairman Angelandrea Casale and Felice

Marciano. The „Noblemen Seat‟ is an ancient

institution dating back to the Middle Ages.

The social year closed on June 12, 2016, with

the participation in Pompeii to a theatre piece

aimed at collecting funds for “End Polio

Now”, the Rotary Foundation program

“Polioplus”.

The “Cycling in Magna Graecia”

Fellowship Section

On Sunday 27 September 2015 the Section,

chaired by dr. Pasquale Di Costanzo, in

collaboration with “Greencycle” association,

organized the event “Pedaling across Magna

Graecia - Between Paestum and Agropoli”.

Starting from Salerno, the team, led by prof.

Mario Mello, reached Paestum to visit the

archaeological area and its Museum. After

lunch at a rural tourist resort, the group

moved on to Agropoli and gained admittance

to its imposing Castle.

Happily together once more, on 24 October,

Rotarians, bicycle lovers and „Greencycles‟

stood together to recall that it takes a small

final effort to free the world from polio. The

bicycle excursion then reached Pozzuoli from

Naples for a visit to the Flavian amphitheater

and Emperor Antoninus Pius stadium.

On October 27 a bicycle excursion to the

Cumae woodland was undertaken, followed

by a tour of archaeological excavations of

Cumae Greek polis.

The trip was followed on the 1

st of November

2015 by a tour of Ischia island (reiterated on

the 10th

of April 2016) and a visit to the Lacco

Ameno Archaeological Museum. Ischia is the

ancient Pithecusa, the earliest Greek

settlement in Southern Italy.

An evening gathering was dedicated to the

Fellowship on the 1st

of May 2016. Speakers

were prof. Mario Mello, a distinguish hed

authority on Magna Graecia studies, and

archaeologist dr. Costanza Gialanella.

Complementing Chairman Casale and several

Fellowship members, there were Rotary Club

members from Napoli Castel dell‟Ovo,

Napoli Nord Est, Aversa Terra dei Normanni

and Pompei Villa dei Misteri.

In a combined operation the “First Magna

Graecia Bike Tour Meeting” involving both

the Fellowship and the “Greencycle” team,

took to the road on 2 to 4 June 2016.

The first day of the archaeological and oeno-

gastronomical itinerary started from Maratea,

on the Basilicata Region seashore, and moved

to Sapri and Policastro on the southern most

coast of Campania.

The second day, after visiting the Elea

excavations at Velia, the party mounted on

their bicycles, pedaling all the way to

Battipaglia via Casalvelino, Pioppi, Acciaroli,

Agnone, Ogliastro, San Marco di

Castellabate, Agropoli and Paestum.

The third day the party rod e round the

ramparts of Paestum and ancient Capaccio

(Paestum being a district of Capaccio city)

under the leadership of prof. Mario Mello –

then cycling to Salerno along the seaside

road.

We are glad to close this Report with the

auspicious address by the Fellowship founder

Giovanni Lazzara to the above tour

participants.

Dear Friends,

At last the tour-meetings of Magna Graecia

Fellowship started again. More than anybody

else, I wish to thank Pasquale Di Costanzo

who, fulfilling my expectations, achieved our

plan to revitalize this joyful Fellowship of

ours.

Due to my long-term personal experience, I

am well aware of the work and commitment

required by an undertaking of this kind, and

of how many persons deserve our gratitude

for their active cooperation.

I am ever so happy for the enthusiasm

aroused by our initiative, and wish all of you

a lot of pleasurable and fruitful gratifications.

Cari amici della Magna Graecia,

l‟anno sociale è iniziato con la partecipazione

il 31 luglio 2015 ad Ercolano agli Incontri di

Archeologia “Ercolano e le Antichità”, a cura

dell‟Università Suor Orsola Benincasa e del

Centro Internazionale Studi Ercolanesi.

Il 10 settembre il Chairman Casale e alcuni

soci hanno partecipato a Torre del Greco al

Premio Letterario Leopardiano “La ginestra”,

organizzato dal locale Rotary Club con lo

scopo di premiare lo studioso internazionale

di Leopardi, prof. Gilberto Lonardi.

Sabato 19 settembre un gruppo di soci del

Distretto 2100 e del Distretto 2120 ha

partecipato a Paestum alla XXXV edizione

del Premio Internazionale Colonie Magna

Grecia, sul tema “Paestum ricerche e studi”.

Domenica 11 ottobre 2015, escursione a

Velia, l‟antica colonia greca di Elea, uno dei

gioielli del Parco Nazionale del Cilento. I

resti di questa antica città si trovano nel

territorio di Ascea. La felice posizione

geografica di Elea, situata al centro delle

antiche rotte commerciali tra Grecia ed

Etruria la rese molto ricca e potente.

Il 27 novembre allo Yacht Club Marina di

Stabia, si è tenuto un Convegno, organizzato

dai Rotary Club, dedicato al programma

rotariano “Scambio Giovani”. Un gruppo di

soci guidato dal Chairman Casale ha

partecipato ai lavori.

Il 23 gennaio 2016, su invito del Rotary Club

Isola di Capri, si è svolta una visita guidata a

Gragnano (Napoli) all‟antico pastificio “La

fabbrica della pasta di Gragnano” con

annesso museo. La visita ha messo in luce

l‟importanza della pasta alimentare nella

“dieta mediterranea”.

Il 16 marzo a Pompei Scavi, inaugurazione

della Mostra “Mito e Natura. Dalla Grecia a

Pompei”.

Sabato 16 aprile a Pompei si è svolto il

Convegno “Il cambiamento climatico e la

risorsa delle energie rinnovabili”, organizzato

dai Rotary Club dell‟area vesuviana. Il

Chairman Casale e numerosi soci hanno

partecipato all‟evento.

Il 28 aprile partecipazione al Convegno “Gli

scavi della missione archeologica spagnola a

Pompei”, a cura dell‟Università Suor Orsola

Benincasa.

Il 14 maggio nel Duomo di Ravello, città

della Costa d‟Amalfi, alla presenza di soci

italiani e stranieri, si è tenuta la presentazione

del libro del Chairman Angelandrea Casale e

di Felice Marciano, dedicato a “Il Sedile dei

Nobili di Ravello”, antica istituzione di

origine medievale.

L‟anno sociale si è chiuso il 12 giugno 2016

con la partecipazione ad uno spettacolo

teatrale a Pompei, per raccogliere fondi per il

Programma Polioplus “End Polio Now” della

Rotary Foundation.

Sezione Fellowship Cycling in Magna

Graecia

Domenica 27 settembre 2015 la Sezione,

presieduta dal dott. Pasquale Di Costanzo, in

collaborazione con i Cicloverdi, ha

organizzato l‟evento “Pedalando per la

Magna Graecia. Tra Paestum ed Agropoli in

bici”. La ciclo pedalata da Salerno ha

raggiunto Paestum, con visita al Museo e

all‟area archeologica, guidati dal prof. Mario

Mello. Dopo il pranzo in agriturismo, il

gruppo ha raggiunto Agropoli, dove è stato

visitato il Castello.

Il 24 ottobre, rotariani, cicloamatori,

cicloverdi, insieme in bici per ricordare che

basta poco per liberare il mondo dalla

poliomielite. Escursione in bici a Pozzuoli,

visita all‟anfiteatro flavio e allo stadio

dell‟imperatore Antonino Pio.

Il 27 ottobre giro in bici alla foresta di Cuma

e agli scavi archeologici della polis greca.

Il 1 novembre 2015 e il 10 aprile 2016 giro

dell‟Isola d‟Ischia, l‟antica Pithecusa, primo

insediamento dei Greci in Italia Meridionale,

con visita al Museo Archeologico di Lacco

Ameno.

Il 1 marzo 2016 serata dedicata alla

Fellowship. Relatori il PDG prof. Mario

Mello, docente universitario e studioso della

Magna Grecia, e la dott.ssa Costanza

Gialanella, archeologa. Presente il Chairman

Casale e numerosi soci, nonché rotariani dei

Club Napoli Castel dell‟Ovo, Napoli Nord

Est, Aversa Terra dei Normanni, Pompei

Villa dei Misteri.

Dal 2 al 4 giugno 2016, con i Cicloverdi, è

stato organizzato il “I Magna Graecia Bike

Tour-Meeting”. L‟itinerario archeologico ed

eno-gastronomico in bici ha previsto il primo

giorno la partenza da Maratea, verso Sapri,

con arrivo a Policastro. Il secondo giorno

visita agli scavi di Velia e partenza in bici per

Casalvelino, Pioppi, Acciaroli, Agnone,

Ogliastro, S. Marco di Castellabate, Agropoli,

Paestum, con arrivo a Battipaglia. Il terzo

giorno visita in bici delle mura di Paestum e

dell‟antica Capaccio con il prof. Mario Mello,

poi per il lungomare arrivo a Salerno.

Cari Amici,

finalmente i tour-meeting della Fellowship

Magna Graecia riprendono.

Più di tutti, vorrei ringraziare Pasquale Di

Costanzo che, rispondendo pienamente alla

mia fiducia, ha reso possibile la

continuazione del progetto di dare vita al

nostro gioioso Magna Graecia Fellowship.

Dalla mia lunga esperienza personale, so

bene quanto lavoro richieda un’impresa di

questo genere, e a quante persone deve

andare la nostra gratitudine per la loro

fattiva collaborazione.

Sono contento che si è creato l’entusiasmo

necessario per tale iniziativa.
