Structural Timber

Fresh Sawn & Air Dried PEFC Structural Oak Over 500 green & seasoned stock beams available from our yard or online stocklist. Sections

100x100 to 350x350mm’s in regular & irregular sizes, lengths 1.0 to 7.0m as standard,

including waney edge curves for bracing.

Stock Most of our structural beam Oak is milled in France by our partner sawmills from French PEFC logs, to our specification. The air dried stock is sourced from the same mills, who lay down stock year on year for French customers (who will only use air dried!) so, beyond our own stock, we have a huge structural timber resource to select from. Our curve stock is in 75,150 and 200mm thick waney edge board, fresh sawn and air dried.

Grade Our structural Oak stocks are graded on request to TH2 (strength class D18) and TH1 (D24) for small* sections or THB (D24) and THA (D30) for large* sections which are standard structural grades that cover service class 2 & 3 (TRADA WIS 1-17). We have two qualified graders on hand to grade timber if required. If you’re unsure about grading, call us to speak to a grader on 01730 816941.

Price & Selection Every piece of structural timber is listed on the stock system with dimensions, grade and price & £/m3. For example:

The online stock list means you can select beams without ever leaving the comfort of your own desk, your workshop or cosy van. Use the picking list to make your choices and then let Graham do all the hard work (good old Graham!) whilst you get on with something more useful instead. We’ll call as soon as they’re ready to collect or we’ll arrange delivery to site. It’s up to you.

Availability If it’s not stock, our structural Oak is cut to order based on specific requirements and delivered on a weekly basis. We work closely with our partner sawmills to achieve the highest quality timber. This means that if we don’t have what you need in stock, you won’t be twiddling your thumbs for long! Your order’ll be ready to be collected or delivered the following week**

What next? Search structural STOCK on our website www.englishwoodlandstimber.co.uk Select your own beams from the yard Send a cutting list to [email protected] Call us with your list 01730 816941

Need a quote? No Problem… send us a cutting list and we’ll get back to you pronto with price and availability. If you’re just pricing, that’s fine. We’ll leave your quote on file and we’ll call you in a month to check the job’s still live. You can come back to it anytime. And when you do need to order we’ll be bringing a lorry in every Monday morning* so as long as you’ve placed your order before the previous Wednesday pm we can usually squeeze you in. *Small = section area smaller than 20,000mm2 & thickness less that 100mm (Grades TH1 & TH2 apply) with the minimum for grading being an area 2000mm2 and thickness 20mm. Large = section area larger than 20,000mm2 & thickness of 100mm or more (Grades THA & THB apply)

**Notwithstanding ferry strikes, blizzards, flu epidemics & the ever plentiful French Bank holiday ( & a couple of our own thrown in for good measure) our haulier is pretty good at getting your timber to us quick-sharpish on a Monday morning (thanks Alain, Sandrine & Tomasz!)

Product Info Sheet Timber Cladding Fresh Sawn (green) Timber Cladding Profiles

Fresh sawn timber is, as it says, fresh sawn straight from the round log. As cladding, it is a very cost effective way of achieving a beautiful, durable timber finish to any building project. All fresh sawn cladding is a custom order item, cut to your specification from Oak, WRC, Larch or Douglas Fir.

Fresh sawn timber is initially high in moisture and will dry out quite quickly after being cut, after which it will season/weather/silver down. The surface is a soft textured, fine sawn finish. This is cleaner and tidier than rough sawn but is not the smooth planed finish of dry machined timber.

Some of the typical profiles used are detailed below with guides on prices: Feather Edge Overlapping cladding, allowing for shrinkage

NB. Fine sawn finish. Other section sizes are available as the featheredge is always is cut to order. Prices are based on using 32mm plank cut in two to produce 25 x 5mm board and a 25mm overlap in lengths up to 4.0m and orders over 25m2. For large volumes please call for a quote. NB. Fine Sawn Finish. Supplied with one straight edge, one waney edge (inc bark & sap wood). Widths vary in sawing runs due to variable diameters of logs. In softwoods, expect widths of 150- 200mm. In hardwoods, expect widths of 200 -350mm. Lengths are usually random, around 2.4m – 4.0m depending on length of logs available. Prices take into consideration the dimensional variations in width when working out overlap for m2. This is not standardised and is worked out on each order - we supply to ensure enough to cover your area. Machined Profiles Fresh sawn timber can be used creatively, in alternative profiles to the traditional or typical. We offer some simple machined profiles that keep the sawn finish - the half lap rebate, chamfered/rhomboid boards, but we can also offer some smooth planed, overlapping or interlocking profiles all of which are fantastic for cladding. Half Lap Rebate with fine sawn finish

NB. Fine Sawn Finish. These prices are based on unspecified lengths from 2.5 - 4.0m depending on species and orders of 25m2 and over. This example gives a 10mm shadow gap between boards.

For half lap fitting, overlap is 20mm to allow for shrinkage. Boards must be fixed approx 15/20mm from overlap butt joint or 35/40mm from overlap edge, this method will restrain overlap and clamp down on board underneath. If board is fixed towards the centre of boards there is a greater risk of cupping and warping than when fixed at overlapping side. Planed Profiles

Cladding Battens Battens provide the framework for fixing cladding and the air gap behind the boards that allows air to circulate to keep the timber dry and avoid fungi & bacteria growth. They don’t need to be a particular species of timber but they do need to be a good grade to stay intact and secure. Ideally they should be strong and durable.

Rule of thumb for centres is 400 - 600mm centres maximum. 400mm is a good tight fix for your fresh sawn cladding and will clamp it down well. Some example prices are shown below but the battens can be custom cut to your size requirement. Prices are based on centres of 400mm therefore 2.5 linear metres per square metre and orders over 25m2. For use with fresh sawn timber (pre-drilling may be advisable when used with Larch, Oak & Chestnut ) We advise the use of austenitich stainless steel fixings for all of our timber cladding products to avoid corrosion and staining issues. Finishes To prevent silvering and weathering of external woodwork we stock OSMO UV protection oil Fire retardant HR Prof is an an easy to use, non toxic, spray/paint/dip for timber substrates that require Euro class B fire protection for prevention of spread of flame. Ask for our product sheet and prices on HR Prof Fire Retardant Treatment. Pressure treatment is also an option on drier timber. Stock The reason fresh sawn timber is only available to order is to utilise the best qualities of the timber - that initial softness and cleanness, ease and simplicity of use, low cost – all are negated when the timber is kept in storage for more than a couple of weeks and has begun to season. It can harden, bow, twist, split, mildew, stain and cannot be fixed in ways fresh sawn can. It also results in wastage. All things we want to avoid! Certification We hold chain of custody certification for both PEFC and FSC timber supply. We also work with the Forestry Commission and owners of well managed woodlands to source homegrown timber, inherently a sustainable source of timber and are working towards a new certification of British timber with Grown in Britain (gorwninbritain.org.uk) We hope this information is useful and we look forward to talking to you about cladding timber soon! Product Info Sheet Timber Cladding - English Larch and Western Red Cedar Air Dried (seasoned) Timber Cladding Profiles

For sophisticated cladding profiles, smooth finishes & cleaner grades of timber seasoned timber can be preferable to the fresh sawn options. The seasoning lowers the moisture content giving a more stable timber cladding. We offer some standard profile shapes but we can also create cutters to any desired profile for bespoke machining.

Machined surfaces will be smooth and can be left to weather and silver down or will take finishes, stains or paints.

Timber Cladding Sweet Chestnut Cladding (Finger-Jointed)

Sweet Chestnut cladding is overtaking Oak in the popularity stakes, partly for it’s lovely, long, machine profiled, finger jointed boards and partly for it’s outstanding sustainbility creditials.

We keep air dried Sweet Chestnut boards to stock to machine in your choice of profile to produce beautiful, durable, PEFC certified hardwood cladding that will enhance any building project. Chestnut is versatile, durable, tough and stong with a density of around 560kg/m³ when Kiln Dried ( at 12% moisture content) and a great lifespan potential.

When it’s newly machined your cladding will have a smooth planed surface with a warm yellow honey colour that varies with the grain and that mellows to a golden colour if oiled but slowly greys to a subtle silver if left to weather which will vary in tone and depth depending on orientation and weathering.

Profiles We machine air dried (seasoned) finger jointed boards to create a more sophisticated, smooth planed, overlapping or interlocking cladding profile. This also includes profiles for rainscreens and louvres and we can also produce additional detailing in matching timber for corners or around doors and windows as required.

If there’s anything you need that you don’t see here we can probably produce it, just ask us!

NB (Cont) It is worth noting that Chestnut does have a high tannin content and a tea coloured staining and leaching is likely to happen over the first 12 to 18 months. There are also issues to do with corrosion of Ferrous metals - see Cladding Notes or contact us for more info.

Sustainability Not only does our Sweet Chestnut comes from well managed woodlands with PEFC certification but the finger jointing is part of a process which utilises more timber than a typical production and is a more efficient use of the raw material. Coupled with the saving on application time on site because of the long lengths it’s no surprise our Sweet Chestnut cladding is getting the edge over our old faithful, the Oak.

Finishes We love the low maintenance option of ‘do nothing’ but if you do want to use a finish on your cladding there are lots of options. We have experience with Osmo oils and would be glad to talk about what you want to achieve.

Fixings We advise the use of austenitic stainless steel fixings for all of our timber cladding products to avoid corrosion and staining.

Orders & Availability We keep Chestnut in stock to produce the cladding to order and can give you a current lead time (usually with in 2 weeks) and any other advice you need about cladding by email [email protected] over the phone on 01730 816941

Delivery Delivery is no problem wherever your project is based, whether it’s delivered locally on one of our trucks or nationally (or internationally!) with our haulier partners, just let us know your site address and we’ll give you our quote.

Shingles Bias Cut Shingles in certified timber

These beautiful timber tiles are our Bias Cut Shingles. Still a sawn shingle, but a very different product from any other sawn European, American or British shingle. Sourced from France (PEFC certified) from high grade logs, these shingles are an offshoot of the barrel making industry.

The sawyers, whose main operation involves production of barrel staves for wine barrels, have produced these incredible timber tiles for use as cladding on walls and roofs. What’s wonderful is the sawyers are about as particular as you can get about quality (you can imagine!) so the logs are the best they can source, resulting in superb quality shingles with lovely straight, intact grain.

Bias cut shingles have a neat, clean cut appearance. They offer a beautiful, distinctive finish to a modern construction or traditional building whilst being durable and tough. As they weather they harden and need no additional treatment. The key to their longevity is good fixing and good detailing. In addition, the multiple layers tiles give a very good insulation.

The ‘bias cut’ actually describes the sawing down the grain (almost like riving) leaving the full length grain on the surface of the shingle, which replicates the traditional riven shake.

The point of this method is to allow water to naturally run off rather than ‘stick’ to the surface or be drawn back up through the endgrain that occurs in regular sawn shingles. It’s quite a clever adaption from the barrel making staves which are required to have full length grain so they can bend, be incredibly durable (not rot and leak wine everywhere!) and remain stable over long (really long) periods of time.

The overall result is a shingle of superior finish with the durability of a traditional shake, the ease of fix of a sawn shingle, and a price that beats them both!

Notes All prices are excluding VAT and delivery.

Availability would usually be 2-3 weeks.

The rule of thumb for laying tiles is 2 layers for a wall and 2.5 - 3 layers for a roof depending on pitch/slope/orientation etc. The shingles are consistent in dimension which helps for ease and speed of fit.

The colouring of each species will vary but when weathered all species will turn silver grey. During the weathering period there colouring will be uneven. Fixings should be stainless steel.

We recommend stainless steel fixings for longevity and to avoid corrosion, staining and rust. The fixing type can vary with application eg; they may be staples, nails or otherwise.

We recommend taking the advice of a professional roofing or cladding tradesperson for an individual specification. 01.09.2013

Hand-drawn Tapered Carpenter’s Pegs

These pegs are used in the construction of heavy timber frame buildings to secure joints. We’ve found these to be the preferred peg of the green Oak framer! Especially the ¾” (18mm). The pegs are cleft Oak, whittled down to produce a gradually tapered, roughly hexagonal peg. The pegs are available in packs of 10 and we usually have plenty in stock - check the stocklist!

Product Info Edge Glued Panels This is our new range of Oak panels made from wide lamellae (50mm plus), full length, square edged, European Oak boards that are glued on edges (no biscuits or finger joints). Ideal for use in furniture and kitchen making where low moisture content and stability are of vital importance and where savings in time and money are crucial for maximising profits. The grades available are Character and Prime. Character grade includes sound knots and pip, shows good grain pattern and character of Oak. Prime grade is a superior grade Oak, very clear with only small sound knots allowed. Sapwood is allowed on reverse face in either grade. The panels are kiln dried to 8-12%, they are filled and sanded to finish on front and back and then individually wrapped in a clear sticky vacuum sealed packaging. This keeps each board clean and dry until required for use. The sticky plastic not only keeps the panel’s integrity in storage but also means it is possible to cut and shape boards with the protective plastic still in place and that means less sanding later on.

Engineered Flooring

This is flooring that has been engineered (lots of thin layers of wood, glued together) for stability and includes a thicker layer of wood on the top. Sometime this is left unfinished for you to finish after the floor is laid, others are ready finished (as shown here) so you don’t need to do anything else, it’s lay and go! Otherwise this flooring is as you would expect, it is tongued and grooved, it has microbevels (v on edges)

All engineered flooring is subject to stock with a lead time of around 5 - 7days.
