VERB TENSES

What is tense?

Tense is that form of a verb which shows the time of an action or event.

The word "tense" comes from Latin word "tempus" which means time.

Kinds of Tenses

There are three main tenses:

1. Present tense

2. Past tense

3. Future tense

Each of present, past and future tense is further divided into

four kinds.

1. Simple (Indefinite)

2. Continuous (Progressive)

3. Perfect

4. Perfect continuous

In this way, there are 12 kinds of tenses, which are explained in

detail as below.

Present Tense

The present tense indicates that the action is done at the

present time. Present tense usually refers to present time but it

can also be used to describe past and future events.

Look at the following examples:

1. I write a letter. (present event)

2. She leaves for England next month. (future event)

3. He is coming on next Monday. (future event)

4. Napoleon now marches on Moscow. (past event)

(This is called the historical present or historic present. In the

historical present, the present tense is used to narrate events that

occurred in the past)

Kinds of present tense

There are four kinds of present tense.

1. Present simple tense or Present Indefinite.

2. Present continuous tense or present progressive.

3. Present perfect tense

4. Present Perfect continuous tense

Present simple tense

The simple present tense is used:

To express an action that takes place at the present moment; as,

1. He reads a book.

2. John sings a song.

To express universal truth and fact; as,

1. The sun rises in the east. (universal truth)

2. The earth revolves round the sun. (universal truth)

3. Beijing is the capital of China. (fact)

To express habitual action; as,

1. I get up early in the morning.

2. We play cricket in the evening.

To express a future planned event which is already arranged; as,

1. I go to London next week.

2. The college closes on the 15th.

To express a past event, in order to make the description more real

and graphic; as,

1. Napoleon now marches on Moscow. (Historic present)

2. Alexander brings a large army to attack India. (Historic

present)

Note. In the historical present or historic present, the present tense is

used to narrate events that occurred in the past.

How to make the present simple

Positive (Present Simple)

Present simple sentences, have the following structure:

Subject + main verb + Object.

Subject + Ist form of verb (s or es) + Object.

For examples:

Subject Ist form of verb (s or es) Object

I eat an apple.

He plays cricket.

You play cricket.

We go to school.

REMEMBER

SINGULAR AND PLURAL PRONOUNS

Person Singular Plural

Ist person I We

2nd person You You

3rd person He, She, It They

If the subject is the third person singular number, ’s’ or 'es' is added to the

first form of verb in present simple tense; as,

1. John goes to school.

2. He plays cricket.

3. She writes a letter.

Negative (Present Simple)

Present simple negative sentences, have the following structure:

Subject + auxiliary verb+ not + main verb + Object.

Subject + do/does + not + Ist form of verb + Object.

For examples:

1. John does not go to school.

2. He does not play cricket.

3. I do not eat an apple.

REMEMBER

Rules: For present simple negative sentences:

Auxiliary verb “do or does” along with “not” is used.

'Do not' is used with; I, We, You, They, or any plural noun.

'Does not' is used with; He, She, It, name, or any singular

number third person subject.

'S' or 'es' is not added to main verb in negative sentence.

Interrogative (Present Simple)

Present simple interrogative sentences, have the following structure:

Auxiliary verb + Subject + main verb + Object?

Do/Does + Subject + Ist form of verb + Object?

For examples:

1. Does John go to school?

2. Does he play cricket?

Rules: For present simple interrogative sentences:

'Do' is used with; I, We, You, They, or any plural noun.

'Does' is used with; He, She, It, name, or any singular number

third person subject.

Interrogative negative (Present simple)

Present simple interrogative negative sentences, have the following

structure:

Auxiliary verb + Subject + not + main verb + Object?

Do/Does + Subject + not + Ist form of verb + Object?

For examples:

1. Does John not go to school?

2. Does he not play cricket?

3. Do you not eat an apple?
