In the present day world the two words ‘quality assurance QA’ and ‘quality control QC” sound synonymous, but actually they are not. QA is a set of activities for ensuring quality in the processes by which products are developed. QC aims to identify (and correct) defects in the finished product. Quality control, therefore, is a reactive process. The goal of QA is to improve development and test processes so that defects do not arise when the product is being developed. The goal of QC is to identify defects after a product is developed and before it's released. Recall the famous inscription of SDS or ISO certification where Quality Assurance and Quality Control are applied. This quality system applies to all business areas and not just production. It is designed to meet customer requirements from ordering through to dispatch ensuring traceability at all stages. At Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi we have one such company

operating for many years. We have Mr. Azam Hadi working as General Manager. Azam qualified as a doctor with the Dow Batch of ‘79. Azam is involved in this difficult business since 1998. Time has proved that he had an inherent aptitude for this line. It took about two decades to hit the jackpot.

Azam’s example is not unique in Pakistan. He did his intermediate from D. J. College as a meritorious student and a position holder in matric. If one is born in a lower middle class stratum the best way to survive is to be firm in belief that there are no wrong turnings and the only way to survive is the path of uprightness. Azam graduated with few friends around and did a house job in Medical Unit II and surgical unit I. Khwaja Muin and Fazal Ellahie Sahibaan were known for their honesty of purpose. Passing commission with Sindh Public Service brought no laurels as posting in Larkana was inundated with handicaps. Azam proceeded to Iran as a medical officer for a stay of about 10 years. In 1992 circumstances forced him to return to Pakistan. For the next seven years he struggled with general practice in different areas of the city. To maintain an ethical self-esteem, decorum and dedication he found himself to be a square peg in a round hole. Was it a lack of aptitude? Was he idealistic? Was it the intrinsic pitfalls of our social milieu that great fortunes only knock at your doors unless you indulge in criminal practices? The answers to the queries are not very simple.

The shift of gears brought happiness, wealth and prosperity to Azam and it looks now that he was lucky to find the opportunity according to propensity. He is married with two children. Studying in IBA secures future for granted. I asked Azam a tricky question. If given another lease of life will he opt for medical profession? ‘I am now experienced and wiser. I will choose to become a doctor again but will structure my carrier based on acquiring higher education on top priority’. Azam’s life tells us "With confidence, you can reach truly amazing heights; without confidence, even the simplest accomplishments are beyond your grasp”. It is vital to keep exploring your own potential all the time. It becomes a pity when life is spent in repentance without any fulfillment by oneself of the possibilities of one's character or personality.

2013, on my 2nd sons wedding in Karachi. I had invited some of my class fellows on that occasion, but
