How to fx common windows !nd windows "# $%o&'(ms

     By Matt Smith — January 25, 2014

icrosots newest operatin# system has its air share o problems, and while many issues arerelated to the conusin# new interace, some have deeper roots$ 5es, li"e any new operatin#

system, Windows H has bu#s$ DaspN

    %ortunately, Windows H shares somethin# else in common with prior version o Windows& a

trend towards maturity$ any showstoppers and annoyances now have solutions$ )ere are the

common problems weve run into A and how to i* them$

    1. 9inding the Start menu

The number one issue that new Windows H users complain about is the missin# start menu$

-espite what early rumors su##ested, Windows H$1 didnt brin# the (tart enu bac", thou#h it

did add an 0pp view,/ which sorta="inda does the same thin#$

%ortunately, there are some third party solutions that resurrect the (tart enu in Windows H, and

weve already covered the best options$ I you install one o these menus, then set Windows H$1

to boot directly to the des"top, you can almost or#et that the etro interace e*ists$ 0lmost$

(ome users have reported repeated appearances o Windows 3*plorer has stopped wor"in#/

ater installin# a resh version o Windows H$ The problem usually occurs every ew minutes,

which obviously ma"es Windows a bit hard to useN

The tri##er or this appears to be a bu# between the operatin# system and a hardware driver or

installed sotware >usually the ormer@$ To i* the problem, youll need to use the Reresh y

open Recovery, and clic" or tap et started under "efresh your 5- without affe+ting your

0 common Windows system process, svchost$e*e, can start consumin# processor cycles it

doesnt need$ This can ma"e your system eel slu##ish, and may even cause it to crash$

There are a ew potential causes$ The irst is malware$ Because svchost$e*e is a common

    0nother potential tri##er is the Windows u:8: >universal plu#=and=play@ service, which scans

    . a+kup sa8es multiple +opies of files that ha8ent *een +hanged

Windows has a robust bac"up utility with ile history unctionality built in$ This means the

bac"up service can detect iles that chan#ed and bac"up the new version while retainin# the old

one$ I you later decide somethin# you did to the ile was in error, you can restore the older

     bac"up$

This is a #reat eature, but some users have noticed Windows H bac"in# up new versions o iles

that havent chan#ed$ This ills the bac"up drive to capacity with redundant iles, which is a

nortunately, while this issue has #enerated many complaints, the e*act cause is un"nown and
