Long live theconstruction site!

Don’t we all dream of a radio controlled excavator model, espe-cially in 1:50 scale?

It remains to be seen if these dreams will ever be realized. As a first step there is now a crane with flashing warning beacons. This nice little detail is the icing on the cake for the new Liebherr MK88 model, and, if whisperings can be believed, it will not be the last one to see the light, so to speak. Three 1.5Volt battery cells, which are included with the model, fit into a compartment under the motor access hatch to power the lights. The on/off switch is under the re-movable middle part of the model roof between the warning lights. This brings life to model const-ruction sites and keeps our model workers safe, and that is important to us.

Many 1:1 scale constructions si-tes could also be found at the Bau-ma. At many stands, gravel, sand and earth were formed into arenas. On these stages, gifted operators

preformed impressive tricks and manoeuvres with the best of the machines on display. The perfor-mances were choreographed in mi-nute detail to prevent clashes with other machines or damage to the expensive hardware on display.

How much life a model cons-truction site can exude is shown very well on the diorama presented by Ladegueter Bauer. We introdu-ce this fine display in this issue. In 1:87 scale and using a plethora of machines and herds of works an old factory is being dismantled. The de-construction business is booming! Wherever one looks there is work being done and as a viewer one can almost hear the motors roar and the old iron work being crushed.

I wish you many lively Model and real life construction sites and, of course, a lot of fun reading this issue of BAGGERMODELLE!

Hiab offers, with its XS series, a flexible crane program that allows each customer to order a crane ex-actly to their specifications. The building block like concept allows the choice between different com-ponents. Crane geometry, joint system, hydraulic valves and even the electronics and the steering parts are customizable within the system.

Teckno-Modell has brought out the Hiab XS 600HiPro in 1:50 scale as an example of the above customizing process; a crane of the 60 metric ton class that is equipped with the HiPro steering system. With the crane arm extended 4.5 meters, it is capable of lifting 11 tonnes, an impressive performance for a truck mounted crane.

For the first example of this concept, Teckno-Modell used the Scania R500 combined with a four axled Goldhofer Lowboy trailer in the very attractive color scheme of Ejler Chr. Knudsen of Denmark. A lot of work has gone into the highly detailed and completely functional model. This closes a gap in the ac-cessory department for heavy duty trucking models.

There are two massive hydraulic cylinders that control the positi-oning and stabilizing of the crane boom. The boom itself can be ex-tended nine-fold for a total calcu-lated distance of 18 meters. The crane arm is made from plastic and its 10 part light weight assembly makes the moving the telescoping

pieces effortless. Despite this, the hook can lift “real” loads; this ma-kes the crane a welcome addition to any diorama.

The two stabilising support struts are telescoping and reach a scale width of 8.5 meters. The support cylinders and feet for the support struts are included in the box and have to be attached by the model-ler. On the console between the steering and the crane boom is a small drilled hole, this is to insert the overload lamp casting. Just like a traffic light, the light changes from green to orange and red when in remote control, so that the crane operator always knows if his load is within the safety zone.

Whilst there were no modifica-tions made to the lowboy trailer, the tractor unit was detailed with additional toolboxes and safety tread surfaces. The paint job and the printing are, as usual, first rate.

Conrad 1: 50

To transport the growing fleet of historical construction machines, Conrad is offering the MAN DHAS 26.240 tractor with low boy trailer. The new model comes in two paint variants: as shown in the picture with Schmidbauer lettering and in the same paint scheme without let-tering but with a Saviem radiator grill. The latter version is very ap-propriate to match the historical ex-cavator models from this producer.

This now gives the collector four different versions of this nice Old-timer. A historically correct con-

crete mixer is a wish still unfilled for the collector.

NZG 1: 50

Extremely well executed is the model of the AW300 small tandem drum roller by Atlas whose proto-type weight was 3 tons. The nice detailing and the all-round clean finish leave nothing to be desired.

Busch 1:87

There are two new paint versions of the Weimar mobile excavator. As T 174-2 “In constant use”, the model is weathered. From among the weathering jobs offered from various suppliers this is one paint job that convinces. The model was not simply dusted with brown paint, but weathering was applied at the right spots. Only the grappler bucket was left out. As T174-2 the model appears in bright orange for the former Reichsbahn and is lette-red for the Nossen Division point.

SpecCast 1:50

The well known model of the Le-Tourneau SuperC with Carryall LP Scraper comes as a tropical version for countries that are blessed with an abundance of sunshine. Wit-hout a cabin, the old timer is even exuding more brute force, and it is easier to get a closer look at the Spartan work area. There are some working lines to lower and raise the bucket and to open the trap door in it.

Herpa 1:87

There are many new items for the red in-house fleet from Herpa.

Leading the parade is the Merce-des Actros LH 08 8x4 heavy duty tractor, followed by the Scania R 09 Topline, for the first time as a just a tractor unit by itself. For the construction fleet designation are the MAN TGS M Concrete mixer with the new all wheel drive chassis and the Scania R three way dump truck, on an all wheel drive chas-sis as well. A great addition and oozing construction site atmosphe-re is the construction trailer with “Max Wild” lettering which would look great being pulled by a truck. The new concrete beams are now offered on an extendable low boy trailer, pulled by an Mercedes Act-ros L 02 in the very attractive paint scheme of the transportation firm “Eisele”. All in silver is the DAF XF 105 SC in the livery of the well known concrete parts transporter firm of “Bender”. There are small

detailing parts included in both models that have to be mounted by the purchaser.

NZG 1:50

Almost all MAN TGX models have arrived at the dealers. The 6x4 tractor with the Nooteboom Pendel X lowboy trailer is a very attrac-tive model in its anthracite color scheme. The 8x4 heavy duty trac-tors with trailer appear in no less than three variants. In a red color and with the lettering for the firm of “Give Svaergods”, the second one heavily chromed with a large heavy duty tower and the third one in orange with a somewhat smaller tower assembly.

As a two axle tractor comes the TGX in black with V 8 lettering and chromed hub caps and as a se-parate model fully chromed (wit-

hout a picture). Also fully chromed is the TGX as a three axled tractor (without a picture). All models are very nicely detailed.

Hits for Kids: Siku 1:50

These powerful tractors with dump trailers that are used to carry away the spoils from construction sites are found not only in moun-tainous regions but also in front of disc harrows to ameliorate the soil conditions on construction sites.

Siku has now started a new se-ries of these machines in 1:50 sca-le with the Fendt 936 Vario and a half pipe dump truck trailer from Krampe. The simply detailed mo-dels with the legendary Siku quali-ty must surely have lots of play ap-peal for the youngest generation.

The 29th Bauma in

Munich has closed

its gates with most of

the models arriving

in time on the exhibi-

tions stands, despite

flight delays due to the

ash cloud problem.

by Daniel Wietlisbach

There were no big surprises as far as models were concerned

however, the surprises came from different corners than expected and gave rise to some lively dis-cussions.

At the front of the line-up was Bymo with the contract for a mo-del of the hefty Komatsu PC8000 followed very closely by NZG with four new Volvo models. Among other models Conrad shone with the Vögele Super 3000-2 and the Liebherr MK88 and TA230 mo-dels. The introduction of the mo-dels follows with the producers in alphabetical order. At the Bauma, the new models where available only in the Fan shops where as af-

ter the end of the Bauma they will be available in the shops of the producers and shortly thereafter in the open market.

A special thank you goes out to Rainer W. Marktgraf for his hospi-tality, enabling us to take some of the model pictures presented here.

Bauer

The BC40 trench cutter by Bymo, which we mentioned in the last issue, was discovered in a display cabinet on the stand. The fine detail and the huge size of the cutter made a great impression and will close a gap in many collectors’ cabinets.

Case

Despite rumours that another his-toric Poclain model would appear, none was present on the Case stand. But as a surprise, from the proven Case CX240B, an interesting Long Reach Version to complement the existing fleet was shown.

Caterpillar

There were some long faces from collectors at this stand. The new AP655D tracked paver and the AP600D were stuck in a plane

in Prague that was grounded due to the ash cloud problem so that not a single piece was sold at the show. When asked about a Bauma-speci-fic new release, the response was that the next new models would be released in the fall. For a market leader, this was somewhat of a slim offering.

Doosan

The Doosan Moxy MT31 made by NZG, in an orange paint sche-me, new lettering and a new radia-tor grill was on offer on the Doos-an/Bobcat stand. Just in front of the shop, the prototype could be admired in action in a show. Un-fortunately in 1: 40 scale, a model of the excavator of the future was discovered and could be seen in a computer animated display screen. The edgeless machine looked more like an insect in its movements than an excavator.

Hitachi

New at this stand were the models of the short tail Zaxis 225 USRK Hydraulic Excavator with very fine detailing and metal tracks along with, in 1:87 scale, the EH5000AC large volume dump truck. There were no progress reports or mock

ups from the two tracked excavator models from NZG (ZK1000 K-3) and WSI (Zaxis ZX870-3).

JCB

On the stand of this British firm was the first production model of the JS220 with Long Reach attach-ment in the new corporate mar-kings was shown. This model was announced first at the Nuremberg Toy fair.

Komatsu

In a dark corner, as if Komatsu wanted to hide this model, was an outstanding diorama produced by Peter Veicht that displayed the pro-totype of the huge PC8000 Backhoe excavator. In a realistic setting and surrounded by two Komatsu 960E large volume dump trucks, the ex-cavator looked great. All hydraulic lines are freestanding and mounted on the jib and boom. The already fine handrails and grips will be made even finer with special etched components for the model and the yellow paint used will be changed to match existing models.

Liebherr

As expected, Liebherr supported the launch of its articulated dum-per with a model of the same. Pro-duced by Conrad, the TA230 in the prototype capacity of 30 tons, was one of the positive surprises at the Bauma. The very fine detailing of the hydraulic lines and the etched grilles over the spotlights will in-crease the heart rate for many coll-ectors. The well known functiona-lity in a Conrad model was retained without compromises. Besides the

individually equalized rear axles the front axle is also equalized. The innovations did not stop at the MK88 with its functioning flas-hing warning lights. Metal pulleys for guiding the operating lines and some of the stabilizing bars made from metal fulfill some wishes of collectors. For the first time it was possible to acquire the models in-troduced at the Nuremberg Toy fair, namely the R944C Tunnel excavator, RL64 Pipe layer, LB28 Drill rig and LR1300 tracked crane with a matching Derrick-set. As a Bauma special, the historical L300 from NZG was offered in a gold paint scheme.

Mammoet

The Tadano-Faun HK70 from WSI was, as predicted, a super model available at the Mammoet-Shop. The truck mounted crane on a five axled Mercedes chassis shone with similar features to the Liebherr LTM 1050 and left a good impression.

Meiller

This dump truck specialist had the MAN DHAS bonneted tractor with a new two axled dump trailer by Conrad. The color scheme in yellow, silver and black was very attractive. An actual prototype has the new three way dumper on a MAN TGS three axle chassis, also from Conrad. Both models func-tion just like the prototype.

Nagel

Displayed on the stand of this wholesaler was the Liebherr L586 2plus2 in the color scheme of the

firm’s rental unit. This was a limi-ted release with only 500 pieces made by NZG.

Sandvik

On a diorama at the Sandvik stand, the promising pre-produc-tion model of an articulated under-ground dump truck, the TH550, was displayed. The model, produced by Conrad, is finely detailed and has, among other features, fine cooling and radiator grills and an etched protective screen over the air filter intake.

Soilmec

The model of the SR-100 is well conceived but uses a lot of plastic parts. After the Bauer BG40 it is the second model with continuous flight auger and so compliments the fleet of drilling equipment from the Italian supplier.

Vögele

Yet another Conrad surprise awaited the collector at the stand from Vögele. The new flagship of the Pavers, the Super 3000-2 paver, was introduced at the same time as the prototype. The outstanding de-tailing down to the motor, the easy moving tracks and all the functions are inspiring and one is tempted to hold the model again and again to see a new angle or admire a new feature. It can, like the prototype, extend the working width to a scale 16 meters.

Volvo

The Swedes showed off with four new models, all from NZG. The

smallest is a very well-executed EC20C mini excavator which is well detailed with great functionali-ty. Next in line is the EW160C mo-bile excavator in a version for the loading/unloading of material. Be-sides being equipped with a special grappler attachment, the cabin is also height adjustable and has been

upgraded with many fine detail parts. The largest new release is the EC460Cl, a superb model that will excite not only Volvo fans. The par-tially open upper carriage deman-ded more detailing than usual, and the motor, visible when opening the appropriate hatch, is a hit and the easy going tracks make this model

”carpet operational”. To finish off the quartet is the L50F wheeled front end loader, a well thought out and executed model. Under the mo-tor hood is a multi-coloured engine mock up. Included with the model are rear view mirrors, antenna, win-dow wipers and hydraulic lines.

Goldhofer low loader trailerfrom Conrad in 1:50 scale

For heaviest loadsThe name Conrad stands for solid, detailed

and highly flexible low load trailer models.

The newest horse in the stable of the Kalch-

reuth firm is the Goldhofer low loader trailer

painted in the Maxikraft colors.

by Carsten Bengs

To begin with, the basic model comes with two chassis pieces that have 4 or 6 axle modules. New in comparison to existing axle as-semblies is the fact that these new modules have axles that are equa-lizing and movable therefore pro-ducing better traction. Conrad has modelled this very nicely and even the hydraulic cylinders that lift the modules on the prototype are simu-lated. All axles are steerable and linked with a rod, thus allowing parallel driving at any time.

Between the two modules, it is possible to attach two adapters with plastic bolts. This is where the high degree of flexibility of the model starts. The low loader bridge can be used to transport oversized loads such as transformers. This is possi-ble on the model by telescoping the bridge part both lengthwise and si-deways. The two modelled adapters even include the hydraulic cylinders that make the sideways enlargement possible. Plastic rods take care of stabilization of the model and are used also for a load bearing surface. Conrad has included sets in three different lengths. As an alternative, small sheets with an imitation wood grain are also included. For the transportation of larger construction machines, the low load trailer unit is needed. This unit is considerably

narrower and to attach it, the second set of adapters is required. These are also attached using plastic bolts. For loading, the front unit can be uncoupled from the axle module. The tractor backs away to the side and an excavator, for example, can then drive right on to the low loader. After re-coupling the axle module, the axle cylinders push the trailer bridge with the loaded machine up and the trip can start.

The third possibility is to couple the axle modules directly together. Connected with the plastic bolts, a 10 axle unit for heaviest loads is then created. Number plates on the rear axle module round out the wealth of detailing.

Concentrated pulling power

For pulling power, a four axled MAN TGX tractor unit is included

in the set. Both front axles are stee-rable and have single rims and tires, both rear axles have double rims and tires, and as a bonus feature are not fixed in place but are mo-vable. Small surface modulations during forward or sideways mo-vement are effortlessly overcome. No wheels are connected rigidly with metal axles but are attached so that they move independently of each other. Fenders on all axles are there and also the steps behind the drivers cabin.

For maintenance work on the “model engine” it is possible to tilt the cabin forward. This then shows off the motor and heavy duty load console unit. This holds the tank and an extra cooling unit. The screen attached above this unit is nicely executed photo etching. The double exhaust pipes are, as in the prototype, chromed and shiny.

Excavator Legend

Northwest 25-DThe dragline excavators from Northwest

were the almost indestructible work horses

on many construction sites right up to the

1970’s. The 25-D was a rather small but all-

round machine.

by Robert Bretscher

The Northwest Engineering Company of Chicago, Illinois

dates back to the year 1920. Before that, under the name of Hatman-Greiling Company of Green Bay, the firm produced large boilers and steel beams. Under the leadership of L.H. Barkhauser, one of the founding members, the first plans were drawn up for a track moun-ted crane. During the First World War the factory shelved plans for the development and construction of their track equipped excavators and cranes. Paul Burke, Vice Presi-dent and a key figure in the firm, fi-nally succeeded in 1921. The new-ly created Northwest Engineering Company of Green Bay designed and produced the first tracked ex-cavators. The first models leaving the plant were the type 104 with a 1 cubic meter bucket. Paul Burke was also responsible for the exte-rior design of the model, giving it the typical look of Northwest ma-chines. By 1927 Northwest was the second largest producer of excava-tors in the USA. In its best year of production, 1955, Northwest pro-duced over 1,000 units.

The bigger Northwest models, like the 80-D or the well-known Northwest 95 were used in Swit-zerland during the 50’s and 60’s. These units were employed in the construction of Hydro dam projects for example, sometimes equipped

with the less common back hoe bucket. The middle and small size models of the 25-D type and 50-D were found on smaller construction sites or in gravel pits with bucket scoops or dragline buckets.

The Northwest 25-D with a weight between 19 and 25 tonnes was introduced in 1958 and could be used as dragline excavator with grappler and with a scooping bu-cket, back hoe bucket or even as a crane. Shovel and back hoe versi-ons had a capacity of 0.6 cubic me-ters. The type 25-D was powered with a standard Murphy Motor and occasionally with GMC or CAT power plants. Models used in the USA could be made with a Con-tinental Gas engine especially for use as a truck mounted crane. The 25-D gathered praises for its robust construction and especially for the well-dimensioned coupling system that allowed for a greater power thrust on the drag line. The produ-cer especially touted the fact that the undercarriage was sealed and waterproof. These facts lead to the excavator sometimes being used

while submerged in water. Typi-cal for the D-25 were the control levers. They were equipped with a spring system arm, somewhat si-milar to a hand brake on a bike’s handle bar. With this lever mecha-nism it was possible to move the lever to the coupling directly into the gear using an ant tripping mo-vement. According to the 50 year- old advertising prospectus this contributed to the ease of operation and a decrease in operator fatigue.

The size of the machine’s base plate was designed to facilitate the transportation of the machine. The undercarriage had a length of bet-ween 3.35 and 3.88 meters and a width, depending on the base plate used, between 2.87 and 3.15 meters.

As a truck mounted crane the up-per part of the 25-D was used. Nor-thwest Engineering even offered to build the truck part of the combi-nation if the customer requested it. Production ceased in 1974. Even today, the 25-D can be found in service as a crane at a construction firm’s compounds or in the role of bulk commodity transferral.

by Daniel Wietlisbach

The appearance of models of the great manufacturer Northwest,

especially the Northwest 25-D was long overdue. The models look very attractive at first glance. Che-cking the measurements confirms that the models are true to 1:50 scale. Especially attractive is the undercarriage with the two track units. The metal tracks are made from 25 individual pieces with a scale width of 70 centimetres. The suspension for the track rol-lers is not rigid so that the tracks can move freely without binding. The running wheels and track gui-des are cast in place and the chain drive is finely modeled but has no functionality.

Upper housing

The plain upper housing greatly simplified the making of the mo-del. Nuts and bolts, screens and door joints are delicate engravings and the paint applied is not so thick as to obscure these details. The only freestanding handrail is on the driver’s cabin. The second one, as well as the exhaust stack on the body of the winch house is moul-ded on. The sliding door of the driver’s cabin can be moved back-wards as in the prototype and al-lows a look at the workplace of an excavator operator of the 50’s and

60’s. As well as the three freestan-ding levers and two pedals which are visible, there are a few levers moulded on the wall leading to the engine room. The operator’s seat is mounted too far back; this ma-kes the installation of an operator figure difficult. The sliding door on the engine room is also made to open. There one finds a simplified imitation of the engine and also the location of the key which operates the rear winch. Right beside is ano-ther winch whose line is operated through on opening in the housing. This is where the greatest compro-mise of the model shows. In the prototype the two winches were mounted side by side and connec-ted to one drive shaft. The exca-vator model from SpecCast has a second winch drum hidden in the housing assembly. This winch’s line comes out of an opening in the left side wall. The controls neces-sary to move the boom and jib as-sembly are connected with the gui-de pulleys and hidden in the engine

room. The line guiding A frame is moulded rigid and does not move.

Equipment

With two drum winches functio-nality is limited, even more so due to the fact that for all three models the lines have been wrongly rig-ged. For the connoisseur of old drag line excavators a quick reach for the scissors in the toolbox is called for and then the lines need to be re-rigged. Please see the rigging plans for the three versions on the next page. At least the re-rigging is easier than expected to do. It is considerably easier to thread the plastic pulleys than the metal pul-leys usually found on most other models.

In our opinion, the version with the general purpose bucket is the one that works best right out of the box from the factory. Boom, jib and bucket are well executed and the pulleys are at the right spot. Despite that, even on this version

Northwest 25-D by SpecCast in 1:50 scale

Triplets! At its show last year, Toyfarmer launched an

exclusive model of the Northwest 25-D which is

equipped with a dragline bucket by SpecCast.

The version with backhoe and the one with ge-

neral purpose bucket are to follow later.

the lines are threaded the wrong way. However this error can be left as it works perfectly as is.

The lattice mast in the Dragline version is a bit on the clunky side but the drag line bucket is perfect-ly fine. The dragline itself has been omitted, and because the pulling line and the lifting line are spooled onto the same winch drum, they are not functional. Since the mast is seldom moved in the dragline po-sition, we decided to fix it in place to prevent it from moving. Another possibility would to use this model in a crane configuration if a suitab-le hook could be found.

The most complex movements were on the backhoe version. It is impossible to mimic all the mo-vements with only two lines. It is possible to move the arm and jib up and down but it is impossible to extend the arm or to open the bu-cket of the model. On top of that it is impossible to understand why the two control lines have been rig-ged in reverse.

Finish and in conclusion

The paint job and the lettering are superb and without any fault, especially the satin matt lacquer

paint coat underlines the fine me-tal construction of the model. The lettering is legible and none of the paint shines through it.

For a price that is less than other dragline excavators in the same weight class the collector receives good value for money despite the reduced functionality.

For this year’s Toyfarmer show the well known Bantam C-35 with a grappler attachment mounted on a truck chassis was announced as an exclusive model. Let us hope that a version with the Northwest 25-D in the same configuration will also be realised.

This is a picture of a dozer loa-der, delivered about forty ye-

ars ago to the Swiss Army. Around

1995 they were declared surplus and many found their way to pri-vate owners as this one did.

Fresh traces of use show that the unit is used regularly despite its advanced age. Do you recogni-ze the machine? If so, write us a post card with the exact type and maker’s name. We accept emails too of course. Addresses are on page 42. The competition ends on June 15th 2010. If there are more

The unique red Ra-

was and is a sensatio-

nal model.

by Robert Bertscher

Besides the fact that this model just oozes charm, it has a lot

of functionality. To produce a mo-del that, as well as lowering and raising the jib and scoop and di-scharge, could also slew the boom hoisting was extraordinary for the time. The bucket scoop could be opened with a cable to discharge

and clicked into closed position when the boom was lowered.

But there was more: The upper part, which rotates on three mo-vable rollers, is connected to the under carriage with a king pin and can be turned 360 degrees with the help of a key.

The rubber tracks can be arres-ted from moving forwards or back-wards by engaging a lever attached to the undercarriage. All control cables are secured in their position by levers that have notches in their guides for this purpose. To opera-te the levers, both back doors can be opened and so the boom and jib can be released. The model shown is about 60 years old and is as fully operational as it was the day it was purchased.

Hermann Gysel too was infected with the construction machine

virus in his early childhood, since his father worked as an excavator operator in the clay pit of the Port-land Concrete works in Thayngen, near the German border. Sitting on an upside down tin beside his father in the operator’s cabin of a Priestman dragline excavator with a jib boom and bucket, he was able to get a close up experience of this working machine. Sometimes the opportunity arose to sit on the tool box of a D8K, with an open driver’s compartment, and accompany fa-ther on the ride. The first model Herman Gysel acquired, he “placed an order” from his sister for. She was going to go to Schaffhausen on a shopping spree with a group of her friends. Her assignment was to look around and see what kind of construction machine models she could find. It was an Allis-Chalmers Motor Scraper from the Match Box “King Size” Series (Number 6). This model, in pristine condition, is still in his collection today.

Collecting by Manufacturer

The young collector was able to help out in a nearby carpentry shop

during any spare time and so was able to earn a few Francs to expand his ever-growing collection. Gy-sels’ first apprenticeship placement went into receivership during the economic crisis of the early 70s, necessitating a switch to the firm of MBA. MBA at this time was the Swiss importer for O&K machines. Although at that time no models were available for the collector, a model was given to the customer as a gift as the purchaser of the real thing. It was possible for emplo-yees to purchase these models at a special rate.

After two decades with MBA, and the main interest in his collec-tion dedicated to O&K, a change in employment to the maintenance department of a construction firm with a machine park of mainly

Caterpillar machines ensued. The-re Hermann Gysel was very im-pressed by the quality of workman-ship of this industry leader. And so the collection of Caterpillar models began to grow in size. The econo-my in the mean time started to pick up in the construction industry and so many hours of overtime were called for. Since the proprietor of the firm was a engaged collector of Caterpillar models himself, and he knew the weak point of our collec-tor, he agreed to pay for the over-time with models.

During a meet with like-minded collectors in a loosely organized group, Herman Gysel struck up a friendship with a Liebherr fan and was infected by his passion. That was the reason for a further expansi-on into collecting Liebherr models.

Collectors portrait

Herman Gysel, 55, began his apprenticeship as a heavy duty con-struction equipment mechanic in a construction firm that went into receivership during his apprenticeship. He concluded his apprenti-ceship with the firm of MBA, the then dealer for O&K in Switzer-land (today New Holland). After 20 years he left the firm for a job as head mechanic for a construction outfit specializing in heavy duty excavators. Today he works in a firm dealing in specialized attach-ment for excavators. He regularly attends meetings with the above described group of enthusiasts. Anybody interested in attending the group can reach Herman Gysel at 079 584-01-27 or Urs Peyer at 079-642-08-26.

Beside his passion for collecting construction models, his other hobby interest is model railroading.

4000 ModelsToday the Liebherr collection

graces the office on the first floor, the Caterpillar collection is in the library on the ground floor and the O&K collection, with additional models from different makes is housed in the basement. Hermann Gysel estimates that his collec-tion numbers about 4000 pieces. The largest number if for the Cat collection with about 600 models, followed by Liebherr and O&K with about 350 pieces each. Most of the models are in 1:50 scale. A small part in 1:25 or larger while the construction cranes are kept in 1:87th scale.

There is no favourite model for this collector, but there is a special segment of the machines that are his favourites, the dragline exca-vator being a favourite since his childhood. Deciding factors for this were not only memories of his father but also first impressions as

an apprentice at his first placement. That firm had an Akerman dragline excavator with pile driving equip-ment in its inventory.

The most expensive model in his collection can also be found in the dragline excavator catego-ry. It is the Manitowoc 4100 from CCM made in 1989 and was the very first model ever released from this exclusive manufacturer. The purchaser had to sign a purchase agreement without the faintest idea as to what he would get. The joy and excitement of the collector was then even greater once the model arrived. Today this model is very sought after and trades for many times the original purchase price. The rarest model however is the Caterpillar D9 by Spot-On in the exotic scale of 1:42. Even then it featured movable axles and had a cable-controlled blade which could be operated from a lever beside the driver’s seat.

The collection is still being added to but only rarely now when visit-ing swap meets, as a favourite cus-tomer at a dealership and in group purchases for models from the Uni-ted States. The next purchase will be the D9H series from CCM in 1:48 scale. He is also searching for the hydraulic excavator from Clark Lima 2505 (NZG 147) which was produced in a limited number in the 70’s for the USA.

Collector’s group

The collector is participating in the monthly meeting of a loosely arranged friendship group of like-minded collectors. The attendance varies between ten and twenty members for an exchange of infor-mation and a chat. Some members show off their progress in scratch or kit-bashed or super detailed mo-del, others show off photographs of trips to view special equipment. At year end, a full day photo shoot trip for this purpose is organized.

Herman Gysel himself has built some of the models in his collec-tion. Mostly they are attachments to existing models, for example a concrete cutter made using a kit. If he completely scratch builds a model, he just starts and gets go-ing, relying on his eye for accuracy as he does not want to count rivets and watch for every millimetre.

Casual visitors to Herman Gy-sel, and those who do not know anything of his passion for collec-ting would be easily excited about the models and would ask too many questions, it would not be in his style to “show off” his collection to outsiders, he prefers to show it like minded colleagues and to the cognoscenti.

Tunnelling means

tough working con-

ditions, tight spaces,

dusty workplaces and

shift work

by Urs Peyer

Starting in the 1960’s, three Aus-trian engineers began to use

the shotcrete process, a concrete mix that is sprayed on the freshly excavated portion of the tunnel to secure the walls as construction progresses. This process is now a standard procedure in tunnel ex-cavation under the acronym NÖT. The process of driving a shaft for a tunnel into non solid ground is divided in to three sections. First the tunnel roof, about 35% of the shaft is excavated, followed by the middle and finally the tunnel sole.

Liebherr

During the 1980’s, for tunnel excavation according to the NÖT protocol, Liebherr developed a po-werful and yet economic tunnel ex-cavator in the form of the R942HD with a weight of 35 tonnes. One of the specialized adaptations to the equipment was a swivel arm. It has 2 45º swivel joints and a 4.5

meter long jib boom. Depending on the density of the material to be removed, the excavator can scoop up 1 to 2 m3 from the tunnel face within the outlined profile of the shaft. After every slice of rock and debris has been removed, workers secure the tunnel profile first with steel mats and anchors, then with steel forms and then a 20 – 30 cm thick layer of shotcrete. Under pro-tection of the first secured section the next portion of the excavation can now be undertaken.

Later on Liebherr replaced the R924HD with the 34 tonne R932, followed shortly thereafter with the 40.8 tonnes R934B

During the 2007 Bauma, Lieb-herr introduced their new flagship for the tunnel construction machi-nes line. Depending on the track width chosen (500-600 mm) the R944C reaches a working weight of between 43.5 and 44 tonnes. A 10.5 litre 6 cylinder inline diesel engine from Liebherr produces 190kw of power. The swivel arm with integrated hydraulic dumping mechanism for the attachment re-mains unchanged at 4.5 meters length. The hydraulic lines used to power the optional attachments are routed underneath the arm and are therefore protected from falling debris. The 700 mm wide mining scoop weighs in at around 1100 kg. At a shaft height of 6.1 meters the R944C can extend its special bu-

cket attachment horizontally for 2.7 meters without having to move the undercarriage ahead.

To create greater manoeuvra-bility, Liebherr developed a new tunnel excavator in 2009 using the R924 compact as a basis. The mi-nimal tail swing design allows the upper part of the 32.4 tonne exca-vator to be rotated by 180º, even when the undercarriage almost tou-ches the tunnel face. The 4.2 meter long boom is designed to allow the attachment of a wrecking hammer with a weight of up to 1700 kg or a disc stone cutter with an 80 kW power output.

Caterpillar

The industry leader introduced its first tunnel excavator at the 1998 Bauma. The 325LBN was used as a starting point. Including the blade and a HD undercarriage, the weight of the Cat 325B LN tun-nel excavator reached 33 tonnes.

Since 2007, the German Caterpil-lar Distributor, Zeppelin, in Boeb-lingen participated in the develop-ment of the new tunnel arm for the 328D LC. As a starting point, the boom with swivel joint from 1998 was used. It was then re-enforced at critical points. For some time now the works in Boeblingen has produced all the specialized booms for all Caterpillar382 LCR tunnel excavators. Steel profiles with an

above average size and special stiffening gussets are used for the tunnel boom with its two 45º swi-vel joints.

On the undercarriage, a robust 3190mm blade is standard; this is designed for cleaning away debris and is also as a safety feature for

the unit. The 43.5 tonne machine is powered by a C7 ACERT diesel engine with a displacement of 7.2 litres and produces 140 kW.

Liebherr R944C tunnel from NZG in 1:50 scale

Tunnel masterA special occasion

this year is the appea-

rance of a tunnel ex-

cavator in 1:50 scale.

Collectors devoted

usually not spoiled

with models.

by Daniel Wietlisbach

Liebherr had its ears open and listened to the wishes of coll-

ectors, proven when reading the NZG forum online. Since this is a model of a most unusual and high-ly interesting machine, executed in first class quality workmanship, it will find homes in display cases

where there are no other tunnel ex-cavators.

Checking the measurements of the model against the specifica-tions of the prototype, it becomes clear that the model is true to scale. Let us start the examination with the under carriage. It is there that the specialisation starts. The bla-de at the front of the unit and the cylinders that operate it are both protected from falling debris by their location underneath the upper carriage. Taken from the standard model is the narrowness of the car-riage to optimize the space availa-ble to manoeuvre. The tracks are made up of 46 individual metal pi-eces, compared to the prototype’s 48, that are under tension over the guide wheel. Unfortunately the tension is so high that the tracks are locked. The bottom plate cho-sen for the model was the wider 60 cm version. The two support

wheels are modeled and work, but the smaller running wheels have been omitted as the four chain gui-des cover them completely.

Upper carriage

The upper part of the model is impressive with the multitude of details added. Firstly in the open driver’s cabin built in a utilitarian way deviating from the usual Lieb-herr design. To the back, higher up, right and left glass panes are modeled with exactly fitting plas-tic glass pieces. The interior deco-rations are moulded in two colors and outside of the workspace there is even a fire extinguisher.

There are eleven free standing hand rails, three mirrors, and a few extra spotlights, the exhaust stack and a thick bundle of hydraulic li-nes make this a finely detailed mo-del. The diverse protective grills

Page 18: English text€¦ · BAGGERMODELLE 3-2010 3 Translation of pages 6 – 9 Tekno 1: 50 Hiab offers, with its XS series, a flexible crane program that allows each customer to order a

over the backup lights deserve a special mention. The other light covers are only printed on the fix-tures directly.

Equipment

The best comes last and is the most exciting part of this, the R944C tunnel excavator. The spe-cial box-like construction of the boom and jib makes the unit look hefty. Contributing to this is the fact that the seven hydraulic cy-linders require a greater number of lines than is usual. The hydraulic lines on the upper part of the arm are fixed but are mounted free-

standing and it goes without say-ing that the two 45º swivel joints function without any problems. As in the original, the hydraulic cylin-ders that control the movement are modelled on the underside of the boom so as to be protected. The one for the attachments is even modelled fully-enclosed making it invisible. It is commendable that as well as the standard stone cutting disc attachment for the model as delivered, a special tunnel bucket comes with the model. The very well chosen and well hidden hyd-raulic line connection to the cutter needs to be studied before taking it apart as there are no instruction

tips on how to re-assemble the at-tachment.

Paint job and final commentsMany of the smaller detail parts

of the model such as lines, bolts, lids or opening hatches have been painted separately to give the mo-del an additional level of finesse. As usual, the lettering is printed sharp and is consistently even.

Pictures of the tunnel excavator at work just cry out for a specialist collector to weather the model.

In closing it only remains to say that NZG has hit it the nail on the head (again) with the excellent mo-del of the Liebherr R944C Tunnel excavator

The title of world’s

largest hydraulic ex-

cavator was given to

the RH60 from Oren-

stein & Koppel in

1970. However, that

title was usurped in

only a few weeks by a

rival in the industry.

by Albert Schmid

In the spring of 1970, the machi-ne was introduced at the Industry

Exhibition in Hannover, Germany. The 100 ton heavy weight RH 60 from O & K astounded the public. A great novelty was the hinged scoop with a capacity of over 6 cubic meters. It was powered with twin, air cooled Deutz 8 cylinder diesel engines, each producing 210 hp. After only a few machines were produced the power plant was

changed to two, Deutz 12 cylinder diesel engines increasing the pow-er output to 2 x 315 hp. Interesting to note is that it appears that up to the end of the production in 1976, the RH 60 was only produced with a scooping bucket.

The master model builder, Peter Keim, from Gottingen has built the RH 60 with a scooping bucket in 1:50 scale. In his workshop he has created exclusive construction models of O&K, Liebherr and la-tely also Menck. The model of the RH60, limited to only 30 pieces, was created using brass, aluminum, tin and polyurethane, better known under the name of resin. Depen-ding on the choice of the custo-mer, Peter Keim builds the RH60 with regular or elevated operator’s cabin. The paint schemes on offer are the factory paint scheme from O&K or the colors of the above ground coal mining firm of NSM, (Northern Strip Mining).

By the way, it was Poclain with its EC 1000 that took the title of world’s largest hydraulic excavator back to France.

An exquisite diora-

ma was purpose build

for “Ladegueter Bau-

er” to show at Fairs.

It depicts a whole fac-

tory site being demo-

lished, or in today’s

lingo, being de-cons-

tructed.

by Daniel Wietlisbach

Ladegueter Bauer is the name of a manufacturer with a line

of scale cargo loads and is a whole network of specialized manufactu-rers. The product listing contains, as the name suggests, freight and loads for model trains, and now also for low boy trailers in 1:87 scale. The loads are mainly new construction or machine parts or large industrial scrap loads. All items are handmade and painted and weathered individually. The weathering seems to be a speciality of this firm of modellers, since the rust is so realistic that it is hard to curb the impulse to touch it.

A Diorama forthe exhibitions

Other dioramas have been used in the past, so that all products can be displayed in an appropriate set-ting. This, the latest of the display diorama deserves our special atten-tion. The main actor on this set in a Liebherr R954 Litronic with a de-molition arm and concrete cutting scissor attachment. It is in the pro-gress to reduce a five story office building to rubble. The excavator seems to have no problems with the utilitarian building. But this is only one part of the story told on the diorama. Right behind this unit another R954 is ripping old pipes out of the ground and a Liebherr L580 wheeled front loader is loa-ding a dump truck with the accu-mulated rubble. Unfortunately the driver was not careful enough and has backed in to a concrete pillar. The fallen pillar is now draped ha-phazardly over the round side bin of the waiting tractor trailer unit. There is a great amount of excite-ment among the crew around the scene. Further in the background a Liebherr A922 excavator is wor-king away.

The large manufacturing plant building with a sheet roof has been stripped of half the bricked exteri-

or walls, so that a part of the steel skeleton is visible, and a great amount of rubble and debris besi-des. Workers are busy cutting the larger pieces of construction debris in to smaller bits using iron rods, welders and jack hammers.

A Liebherr PR 734 Litronic is parked outside the building and right beside it a L580 wheeled loa-der is loading concrete rubble di-rectly in to waiting train cars. Since the factory had a siding, part of the debris can be removed by rail. The third Liebherr wheeled loader is getting a new front tire mounted, a job that keeps four men busy.

Not a coincidence

“That we had to have road and rail road on our diorama was a gi-ven” explains Huber Wein, who in the network is the specialist for weathering and diorama construc-tion. The purpose of the exhibit is to display the loads for road and rail transport, just like on a stage. For this reason the front part of the diorama slopes downwards in steps. That the display uses mainly Herpa construction models is due to the readily availability. In the mean time to assist in the work, an excavator model from Kibri has been added.

To depict the concrete scale rubble, slabs and pillars of it where poured including wire mesh depic-ting the rebar. After the casts had set they were then broken in to pi-eces using a variety of tools inclu-ding Hammers. Almost as created as if without trying the desired pi-eces of rubble emerged. The paint process deserves a special mentio-ning. “It is not really that difficult” says Hubert Wein. The first step

is an undercoat of all the rubble and the building in a grey tone. Following this several washes of differing weathering paints are ap-plied, these are thinned down as to run in to all the ruts and crevasses. A sprayed on top coat highlights the models and gives the overall dusty appearance. The rust effect was achieved using a similar me-thod. On to the still damp under-coat, a dark brown color, fine sand

is sifted on. The next step is pain-ting thinned down rust paint in dif-fering tones so that they can flow together. To weather the vehicles and machines a thinned grey color was brushed on, so that it could run in to the grooves and cracks. The excess was wiped off and a final coat of grey, applied with a spray gun completed the process.

Eder 8 150

One of the biggest surprises at the 2010 Bauma surely was the 150ton Eder 8150 backhoe exca-vator. The construction and design of this prototype was undertaken in Dortmund. The hydraulics system is from Rexroth and as a propulsion plant, the Cummins V12 diesel en-gine with an output of 780 hp was chosen. The exhibited excavator was equipped with a 9 cubic metre backhoe bucket and will be marke-ted worldwide. A few years back Eder announced that they would produce a shovel excavator in the 800ton class. Unfortunately, only a model in 1: 50 scale was ever pro-duced.

Liebherr R9100

Liebherr is expanding their offe-rings in the mining excavator sec-tor with the new R9100 weighing in at 110 tons. This new model fits in between the R974C and the R984C already offered. The pow-er unit used in the new offering is the same V12 Liebherr with a dis-placement of 24.24 litre and produ-ces 565 kW. The standard backhoe bucket has a capacity of 6.8 m3 and the shovel version has a 7.0m3 capacity. The newly designed operator’s cabin offers first class comfort and an ideal working envi-ronment. Not officially introduced was the R9150 excavator model that will replace the very success-ful R984C in the near future.

O&K switches to anew color scheme

It was a surprise when Bucyrus took over the mining construction machine sector from Terex in 2009. Two excavators were shown in the new Bucyrus colors for the first time at the 2010 Bauma. The Bucy-rus RH120E with a working weight of 287t, was without any doubt the largest excavator shown at the Bau-ma. The bottom dump bucket has a capacity of 16.5 m3 and the power plant consists of a choice of either two Cummins or two Caterpillar engines with an output of 1008kW or 1140 kW respectively. Since its introduction in 1983, the RH120 has been the worldwide sales leader in its class. At the western entrance to the Bauma, visitors were greeted by a Bucyrus RH40E excavator, weighing in at 105t and equipped with a backhoe bucket with a capa-city of 7 m3. With the takeover and the new paint scheme, all traces of O&K machines are now in the con-struction machine Nirvana.
