Niigata, January 4, 2014

Dear Ketut,

How are you back there in your beautiful country-in Bali right? Miss you so much in this ski resort. I dont have anyone to be my racing partner... True, there are many people here, but we cannot compete people from countries with no winter and people from Niigata right. So An Indonesian vs. A Pilipino, it was fair enough, wasnt it?

And this afternoon I had an unforgettable experience. I was cycling with my new roommate around the country lane when we saw some children playing on a frozen pond.

Suddenly we heard a shout. One boy had fallen through the ice. We immediately rushed over to help, but it was too dangerous to walk across the ice. My friend and I ran to borrow a ladder. I put the ladder on the ice and crawled across it towards the boy. I caught hold of his hand and finally manage to pull him out of the icy water. Luckily the boy wasnt hurt, but he was very frightened.

His parents turned up about ten minutes later. When they saw him, they were shocked and very angry with him! I felt a bit sorry for the boy. He had certainly learnt a lesson the hard way.

Sincerely,

Gene

MarieCuriewasbornas Maria Sklodowska in Poland in 1867. Though Maria excelled in school, no university in Poland at that time allowed female students.

In1891,Mariatraveled to Paris, France. She called herself Marie, the French form of Maria. She attended the Sorbonne, a famous college in Paris. Marie studied physics and mathematics and graduated at the top of her class. She also met a French chemist named Pierre Curie. They married in 1895.

MarieandPierrewere pioneers in studying radioactivity. Radioactivity is a process in which certain elements, such as uranium, break down into other elements. In the process, they give off energy in the form of radiation. Marie and Pierre built on the work of Wilhelm Roentgen, who discovered X rays, and Antoine Henri Becquerel, who discovered radioactivity in the element uranium. X rays are a type of radiation.

TheCuriesdiscovered that a mineral called pitchblende was radioactive. Pitchblende contains uranium. But pitchblende gives off more radiation than uranium alone could. The Curies guessed that there must be other radioactive elements in the pitchblende.

TheCuriesseparatedhuge amounts of pitchblende into its chemical partsthe elements it is made of. In July 1898, they reported the discovery of a new element called polonium. In December, they announced the discovery of another new element, radium.

In1906,ahorse-drawn carriage hit and killed Pierre. Marie stepped into his teaching post at the Sorbonne. She was the first woman to teach at the university. She poured her energy into research and raising her daughters. One daughter, Irene, followed her parents into scientific research. In 1914, the Sorbonne built a new laboratory to research radioactive materials. Today the laboratory is named after Marie Curie.

MarieCurieearnedlittle money from her famous research. Her Nobel Prize money paid for more research. She did not patentreserve for her own gainher discoveries. She left them free for other scientists to use.

Samas Beach is located at the west of Parangtritis beach, at Srigading village, District of Sanden, about 14 kilometres south of Bantul. From downtown Yogyakarta, you could travel to the southwest for 35 kilometres to get to the beach. Samas Beach is easy to visit with private or public vehicles.

In the beach there are many estuaries which form into lake and used as a place for cultivating fresh-water fish and shrimp. Besides its beauty, the specialty of this beach is sea turtles. Samas beach is a beach often visited by sea turtles of many kinds like the Hawksbills sea turtle, the leatherbacks sea turtle, and the green sea turtle. Those sea turtles come at a certain time and during the egg-laying season.

In this beach you will find a conservation area of sea turtle as a concern from the society and the government toward this endangered species. In the conservation area, you will find a pool for the sea turtles babies. The babies will be kept in the conservation to avoid them from the predators, until it reached certain age and ready to be released to the sea.

Besides seeing the sea turtles in the conservation, you can also go to the lake which is formed from the rivers estuaries to fishing, or perhaps to ride boat in the lagoon. This beach is suitable as a natural tourist object where you can enjoy the natures beauty, learn about the sea turtle or simply refresh your mind with your friends or family.

Hundreds of years ago, during the reign of the last king of Majapahit (13 14 century AD) Brawijaya, one of the kings' wives gave birth to a girl, Roro Anteng. Later she was married to Joko Seger, from Brahman (priests) caste. Because of an unfortunate situation, they were forced to leave the kingdom. The settled an area in the mountain named "Tengger".

For years, they were unhappy because they didn't have a child. They climbed the peak of the mountain prayed to God. Betara Bromo (God of fire) promised them many children, but they had to sacrifice their youngest child.

Finally they had 25 children, and they had to sacrifice the youngest, Kesuma, but they hid him. But an eruption happened and Kesuma fell into the crater. Then his voice was heard. "I have to be sacrificed so that you will always all stay alive. From now on you should arrange an annual ceremony on the 14th of Kesodo."

Kesuma's brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year by offering fruits, vegetables, rice and meat. This has been done until today by Kejawen sects (the Javanese original religion mixed with Islam).

Long long ago there was a kingdom in West Java. The kingdom was ruled by a king. called Prabu. Prabu was a kind and wise king. No wonder if that country was prosperous. But it was a pity that Prabu and his queen hadnt got any children. It made the royal couple very very sad.

The queen was very sad. She often cried. That was why Prabu decided to go. He went to the jungle. There he prayed to God. Everyday he begged for a child. His dream came true. A few months later, the queen got pregnant. All people in the kingdom felt happy. They sent many presents to the palace to express their happiness.

Nine months later a princess was born. People welcomed her happily. The king and the queen spoiled her too much. Thats why she had a bad temper.

Before her seventeenth birthday people presented so many gifts.Their presents were very beautiful. Prabu only took some gold and jewels. Then he brought them to the goldsmith to make a beautiful necklace. The birthday came. People gathered in the palace. When Prabu and queen appeared, people welcomed them happily. Prabu and his wife waved to their beloved people.

Cheers were louder and louder when the princess appeared with her fabulous pretty face. The king presented the necklace to the princess.

My beloved daughter, I give this necklace to you. This necklace is a gift from people in this country. They love you so much. Princess accepted the necklace and looked at it briefly. I dont want it it! Its ugly! . Then she threw it away.

Everybody was speechless. They couldnt say anything. They never thought that their beloved princess would did that cruel thing. Nobody spoke. The queen and the people began crying. Then there was a miracle. Earth was crying. Suddenly, from the under ground, a spring emerged. It made a pool of water. The place was getting full. Soon the place became a big lake. The lake sank all of the kingdom.

Nowadays the water on that lake is not as full as before. There is only a small lake now. People called the lake Talaga Warna. It means Lake of Colour.

Its located in Puncak, West Java. On a bright day, the lake is full of colour. So beautiful and amazing. These colors come from shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky around the lake. But some people said that the colours are from the princesss necklace, which spreads at the bottom of the lake.
