be ing Lloyd's Co f fee H o u s e in L o n d o n .

T h e old print on t o p of page six repre-

sents such a scene. T h e girl in the next

p h o t o g r a p h is ho ld ing a b u n c h of r ipe

co f fee berr ies; another phase in the

processing of co f fee is i l lustrated o n page

e ight , w h e r e the beans are dr ied o n large

concre te surfaces. T h e ripe co f fee beans

are covered by a k ind of f leshy frui t husks,

a n d t h e y g r o w in pairs in the w a y w h i c h

is i l lustrated on page seven. W h e n the

a b o v e - m e n t i o n e d d r y i n g - p r o c e s s is f i -

n ished, th e f leshy husk and t w o protec-

t ive layers of v e g e t a b l e p a r c h m e n t a n d

so -ca l led "si lverskin" are threshed of f .

T h e beans are n o w ready for being sorted

and packed .

Co f fee is a di f f icult c o m m o d i t y for a

ship to carry because it is very sensit ive

to moisture a n d smell . It shou ld be kept

dry, cool a n d we l l ven t i l a ted and also

w e l l separa ted f r o m other c o m m o d i t i e s

g iv ing f ragrance of a d i f ferent k ind, or

w h i c h m i g h t themse lves be a f fected by

the cof fee .

Brazil has for m a n y years b e e n d o m i n a t i n g

as a co f fee nat ion. Severa l t imes u p -

w a r d s of 6 5 per cent of t h e w o r l d p ro -

duct ion c a m e f r o m this c o u n t r y ; a n d it

might be m e n t i o n e d t h a t dur ing the

years 1 8 5 0 t o 1 8 5 4 t h e Danish ship

f r o m S o u t h A m e r i c a to D e n m a r k , a n d

o n b o a r d w a s a y o u n g sailor n a m e d

In an area the size of D e n m a r k and

S w i t z e r l a n d put toge ther t h e y subsisted

currents meet is o n e of t h e w o r l d ' s

th ree largest f i sh ing -a reas w i t h a n a b u n d -

a n c e ot sa lmon, t rout , c o d a n d c r a b s —

unti l the J a p a n e s e g o v e r n m e n t f o u n d it

necessary to d iver t s o m e of the ever -

g r o w i n g surplus p o p u l a t i o n especial ly

f r o m H o n s h u , w h e r e less t h a n 2 0 per

cent of the soil c a n be t i l led.

T o d a y H o k k a i d o c a n s h o w u p not only

m o d e r n i z e d agr icu l ture a n d dairy pro-

d u c t s but also a rapidly g r o w i n g indu-

stry, part ly based o n the large forests of

t h e i s l a n d — a b o u t 7 0 per cent is covered

by forest, but e v e n steel a n d chemica ls

are m a k i n g t h e m s e l v e s felt . T h e r e is also

a large shipyard, t h e H a k o d a t e Sh ipyard ,

a n d t h e S a p p o r o brewer ies cover about

2 5 per cent of the tota l beer c o n s u m p t i o n

in J a p a n .

T h e c l imate of H o k k a i d o is d i f fe rent f r o m

t h a t of the rest of t h e country , a n d s n o w

covers the island f r o m D e c e m b e r to Apri l .

T h e r e is an a n n u a l s n o w - f e s t i v a l at

S a p p o r o in February and there is a

c o m p e t i t i o n for t h e best s n o w sculptures

e a c h year. S o m e of last year 's "entr ies"

News f r o m the Mærsk Refinery A special t ranspor t by rail t h r o u g h C o p e n -

l u m n of rather unusua l d imensions . T h e

c o l u m n , w h i c h is 3 6 metres long a n d
