ENGLISH SECOND LANGUAGE
ESL programs are intended for students whose first language is notEnglish and who are unable to benefit fully from regular classroominstruction because of a lack of comprehension or facility inEnglish. The intent of this type of program is to enable thesestudents to develop the necessary English language skills tofunction adequately in school and in the community.
Authorized learning resources for ESL are provided under theReimbursable Text Policy. According to this policy, schooldistricts are required to purchase authorized learning resources andsubmit copies of the paid invoices to the Learning ResourcesDistribution Centre.
Resources for ESL K-6 may be ordered where there is an ESLteacher allocated.
Authorized Resources may be ordered for immigrant students ingrades 3-6 who are functioning at a beginning to intermediateEnglish level or who have major gaps in literacy achievement,regardless of whether there is an ESL teacher allocated. Childrenfunctioning at a beginning to low English level would normallyhave had less than two years immersion in English.

The ESL course offerings at the senior high level are language(1205, 2205, 3205) and literature (3206) based. The languagecourses range from beginner through intermediate to lowadvanced while the literature course is designed to help prepareESL students for English 3201, which is required for entry intomany post-secondary institutions.
