ENGLISH SECOND LANGUAGE

ESL programs are intended for students whose first language is notEnglish and who are unable to benefit fully from regular classroominstruction because of a lack of comprehension or facility inEnglish. The intent of this type of program is to enable thesestudents to develop the necessary English language skills tofunction adequately in school and in the community.

Authorized learning resources for ESL are provided under theReimbursable Text Policy. According to this policy, school boardsare required to purchase authorized learning resources and submitcopies of the paid invoices to the Learning Resources DistributionCentre.

The ESL course offerings at the senior high level are language(1205, 2205, 3205) and literature (3206) based. The languagecourses range from beginner through intermediate to lowadvanced while the literature course is designed to help prepareESL students for English 3201 which is required for entry intomany post-secondary institutions.
