III. NUMBER OF NOUNS (Rules in Forming the Plural of Nouns)

Here are some rules in forming the plural of nouns.

To form the plural most nouns, add –s.

Ex. Trees Legs Arms

Add –es to form the plural of nouns ending in s, z, x, ss, sh, or ch.

Ex. Bushes Boxes Churches

To form the plural of nouns end in y preceded by consonant, change y to i and add – es.

Ex. City- Cities Duty- Duties Secretary- Secretar ies

Add –es to form the plural of most nouns ending in o preceded by a consonant.

Ex. Potatoes Tomatoes Echoes

To form the plural of some nouns ending in f or fe, change the f to ve and add – es.

Ex. Knife- Knives Life- Lives leaf- Leaves

For some nouns the plural is formed by changing a vowel sound or by adding a syllable.

Ex. Mouse- Mice Goose- Geese Child- Children

Some nouns are the same in the singular as they are in the plural.

EX. Deer Equipment Jewelry

To form the plural of hyphenated compound nouns, make only the most important noun plural.
