Learning Objective:
To identify suffixes within a text.
I can identifying different suffixes in a text.

Our topic this week is…
Science Fiction
Today, we are going to explore suffixes.
Can you remember what a suffix is?
That’s right… A suffix is a group of letters that go at the end of a word
that change the meaning.
See how many suffixes you can write down in 2 minutes…Go!
(If you need some help – have a look at the next slide).
Now, copy the box below in your books and have a go at writing as many words with the following suffixes as you can in each
box.
Look at Chapter 4 of our book ‘The War of the Worlds’.
Write down all the words with suffixes from this page and on the next slide.
I am especially interested in you can find the suffixes –ful, -less, -able
Then, underline the suffix (if possible in a different colour).

Now, choose a book, newspaper, magazine etc. from your house and repeat the activity of
finding words with suffixes and writing down the words/underline the suffix in a coloured
pen or pencil.
Challenge Task:
Can you write your own Sci-Fi story introduction and then underline the suffix in
colours again. I am especially interested in you can add the
suffixes –ful, -less, -able

Can you write sentences using one of these words in each sentence.
Aim to write 10 sentences if possible.
(Try to use a new word you do not know. This will increase your vocabulary. Look the word up in a dictionary or online to find out the meaning).

Let’s look at some Sci-Fi story starters and consider what it includes:

Writing a descriptive setting, helps the reader to imagine and leaves them wanting to read more.
When we are writing a setting, we must try to include the following items on the checklist.
The next few slides will show you Sci-Fi setting scenes. Some of these we have looked at before last week.
Imagine you are in the setting.
Use your senses to describe the setting.
I would like you to write down key words and phrases in your books to describe the settings .

Now, you are going to have a go at writing 1-2 paragraphs introducing a setting from your own Sci-Fi story.
You need to use your own imagination and your own story ideas.
Please use your previous words and phrases in your writing.
