Types of Japanese Drama

Noh 1. derived from the Japanese word for "skill" or "talent" - is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the 14th century. 2. Many characters are masked, with men playing male and female roles 3. Traditionally, a Noh "performance day" lasts all day and consists of five Noh plays interspersed with shorter, humorous kyōgen pieces. 4. This form started from the ancient Shintô ceremony. Later the stories of Noh plays developed Buddhist themes dealing with the great sadness of life, especially death of loved ones and lost hopes.





RolesShite appears first as a human and then as a ghost.

Waki performs the role that is the counterpart or foil of the shite.

Kyōgen interludes during plays. Kyōgen actors also perform in separate plays between individual noh plays.



Chorus- often echoes the words of the characters but it may also speak for them.

Hayashi are the instrumentalists who play the four instruments used in Noh theater: the transverse flute, hip drum or ōkawa, the shoulder-drum, and the stick-drum .The flute used for noh is specifically called nōkan or nohkan.

StageThe traditional Noh stage consists of a pavilion whose architectural style is derived from that of the traditional kagura stage of Shinto shrines, and is normally composed almost entirely of hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood.

Kabukiis a classical Japanese dance-drama.Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing.“In modern Japanese, the word is written with three characters: ka, signifying “song”; bu, “dance”; and ki, “skill.”Kabuki was popular among the common townspeople and not of the higher social classes. Kabuki plays are about historical events, moral conflicts, love relationships



Kabuki takes place on a rotating stage (kabuki no butai). The stage is further equipped with several gadgets like trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another specialty of the kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that leads through the audience.

In the early years, both men and women acted in kabuki plays. Later during the Edo Period, the Tokugawa Shogunate forbade women from acting, a restriction that survives to the present day. Several male kabuki actors are therefore specialists in playing female roles (onnagata). Male actors specialized in womens roles are called onnagata

Two other major role types are aragoto (rough style) and wagoto (soft style).
