Introduction Control Omni is an advanced remote control system with a built-in mobile phone, adapted for people with disabilities. Control Omni is controlled by direct touch on screen but it is also possible to connect external control switches to use a scanning function. Control Omni is programmable, which means that it can "learn" IR codes from other remote control units such as those for a TV, video or stereo system. Control Omni is equipped with a built-in radio transmitter for environmental control. The screen is dynamic, and the information displayed can be arranged according to the users’ needs and preferences.

Advantages of Control Omni Control Omni makes it possible: to control the environment with both IR and radio. to learn IR codes from most IR remote control units on the market. to add an unlimited number of IR codes (is only limited by the memory in Control

Omni) to create macros that can transmit both IR and radio. to make phone calls and send SMS with the built-in mobile phone. to create different pages with different numbers of functions. to copy, move and exchange the location of functions. to receive auditory feedback and use auditory scanning with recorded speech. to connect one or more control switches for scanning. to select between several different scanning methods. to add a delay before activation. to select between several hundred pictures that are included. to select between over 30 completed pages. to make back-up. to easily select different languages for menus, help texts and prediction lists. to use alert function to attract attention. for the user to make almost all settings himself or herself.

Starting Control Omni for the first time 1. Insert the enclosed charger into the outlet (see fig 1).

2. Charge until the battery indicator shows a green light. It is

important that Control Omni is fully charged the first time in order for the battery to receive a maximum capacity. NOTE! The batteries must be charged at regular intervals, once a day. Do not let the batteries run out completely.

3. Start Control Omni by pressing the stylus on the ON/OFF button (see fig 2).

Brief Demonstration When Control Omni has been started it takes some minute before it is ready for use. Select “Go to Start page” when this page is shown (fig 3). Press on different buttons on the screen to get an idea of how Control Omni works (fig 4). The buttons with symbols represent functions that can be controlled, e.g. by pressing the telephone buttons you will reach a new page where you can make a phone call or send an SMS (fig 5) with the built-in mobile phone. By pressing the TV button the different functions on the TV can be controlled. Return to the start page

by pressing on the image of the house . You can continue pressing different buttons to find out how they work. In order to test how the scanning function works, you can connect a control switch, see fig. 1 on page 5. The default setting for Control Omni is to use automatic linear scanning with one control switch. Start the scanning by pressing on the control switch. The next press activates the function, which means, for example, that another page is activated or an IR signal is sent. The standard pages can be used as a starting point for adapting the system for different users. Pages can be removed, and new pages can be added. There are 28 completed pages that can be selected and added. The images can be changed, functions can be added, speech can be recorded, etc.

Scanning Settings

Scanning Methods

Different scanning methods can be used in Control Omni. Selections can be made between one or two control switches, automatic or manual scanning, row/column or linear scanning, forced scanning or repetition. The setting selected when Control Omni is delivered automatic linear scanning that is controlled by one control switch. The various scanning methods are as follows: Automatic scanning: Control Omni steps forward automatically following a press on

the control switch.

Manual scanning: Control Omni steps forward one step at a time for each press of the control switch.

Forced scanning: It is possible to force automatic scanning by pressing the control switch several times.

Repetition: It is possible to make Control Omni step automatically when using manual scanning by keeping the control switch pressed.

Row/column scanning: This can be either manual or automatic – the principle is the same in both cases. First, steps are taken row for row and then buttons along the selected row are stepped.

Managing Pages

Adding a Completed Page

Control Omni is delivered with standard pages that are described in the section "Brief Demonstration", page 6. An additional 30 completed pages are included so that you don't have to create pages from scratch. The pages included are suitable for different items that are to be controlled, such as telephone, TV and DVD. Some pages are complete with GewaLink channels and images, other pages have only images. Each image represents a function, such as opening the door, switching the light on. These functions are arranged to suit the needs of the user, with respect to both logic and frequency of use. Much time can be saved by using these completed pages, rather than starting from scratch and building new pages. Note that it is possible to browse both forwards and backwards in Control Omni when selecting pages. It is quite possible to modify a completed page. When you add a complete page, a link is created to the first available button on the starting page. If no button is available, a new row is added. The text on the button can be exchanged for an image. See the section "Adding Images", Page 28.

Changing a Page Name

A user sometimes has several devices in different rooms. It is easy to get confused about which pages belong to which rooms, when adding completed pages. It is possible to change the name of a page to, for example, "TV bedroom", "TV living room", or "TV kitchen". Change the name of a page by the following procedure:

Pages/buttons Select page browse among the pages available Select

this page Properties Change page name Write in the new text.

Adding/removing buttons on a row

The number of buttons on a row can be changed, e.g. a row might have one button and the next row 4 buttons. Add/remove buttons by the following procedure:

Pages/buttons Select page browse among the pages available Select

this page Properties Buttons select add or remove button.

Exporting Pages It may sometimes be necessary to be able to copy a page that you have created, such as a page for a TV in one room to a page for a TV in another room. Or you might have created a page that is useful for other users. The page must be exported to make this possible. Note! There are three things you should be aware of when exporting a page: 1. Give the new page a new name, in case Control Omni must be reset. If the page has

the same name as one of the completed pages in Control Omni it will be overwritten when Control Omni is reset.

2. Always make a back-up when an exported page has been used for a user. Thus the page will always be saved on the memory card.

3. If you want to save the page for future use, you should copy it to a PC. The next section describes how to copy a page to a PC.

Export a page by the following procedure:

Recording IR codes If Control Omni is to be used to control a TV, for example, or a video, stereo, DVD, toys, lamps, etc., these devices must have a remote control unit that emits infrared light (IR light). Most TVs have a remote control unit that is used to control various functions. This remote control shall be used to teach Control Omni IR codes Before starting to record IR codes, ensure that Control Omni is fully charged and that the batteries in the remote control unit are also fully charged. Do not place Control Omni and the remote control unit in bright light (such a strong sunlight) during the learning procedure. When you have learnt how to record IR codes, you can proceed and use the rapid learning procedure, which is described in the section "Rapid Recording" page 21.

Creating Macros Control Omni can send macros which means that Control Omni can emit both IR-signals, radio signals and activate a button with recorded sound. Control Omni automatically carries out a sequence of operations after one button is pressed. For example, 4 buttons must be pressed in order to reach a page on Text-TV. You can create a macro from these four button presses. A macro can last for up to 11 seconds. When creating Macro it is possible to set the time between each button press. This is made by pressing the same button on which the Macros can be stored . When creating the Macro the time for each press is also shown. Note! The button that is selected for storing the macro is given a temporary image .

Adding radio control In Control Omni it is possible to control different devices with Gewa Radio (GR). GR-unit can be a radio receiver (GR-receiver) or a radio transmitter (GR-transmitter) from Abilia or a switch and wall outlet from Schnider (Connect) and Merten (System M). Before entering GR-units the following must be considered:

Appliances possible to control are switches and wall outlets from Schnider (Connect) and Merten (System M).

We recommend you to start by resetting GR-units (Delete GR-units) before entering them in Control Omni. If a GR-unit has been programmed it cannot be added again without a reset.

Control Omni must always be used as the primary transmitter. Start by progamming Control Omni and then add other GR-transmitters. To add other GR-transmitters we recommend you to read the GR-manual.

When a Control Omni has been programmed with GR-units a back-up should be made to save all settings. It is always possible to use the backup-file for another Control Omni and thus restore the same functions.

If Control Omni should be switched off or break other GR-transmitters, programmed in the system, will always continue to work. If Control Omni is replaced by another Control Omni a back-up must be used from a broken unit.

To be able to add GR-unit you must understand the vocabulary below: Include GR-unit (Include) Include GR-unit in Control Omni which shall be able to control. Exclude GR-unit (Exclude) Exclude GR-unit from Control Omni (is recommended if GR-unit is available).

Page 24: English Manual Control Omni - Zyteq...Automatic scanning: Control Omni steps forward automatically following a press on the control switch. Manual scanning: Control Omni steps forward

Control Omni must always act as Primary transmitter which means starting to program Control Omni and then add other GR-transmitters. To include other GR-transmitter we recommend you to read the GR-manual. Confirmation Off/On To receive confirmation of whether a function is performed or not, for instance switch on the light in another room. If the function is not performed you will get a beep. It takes a few seconds before you get a confirmation.

Recording Sound

It is possible to record sound in Control Omni, which is heard when scanning between different buttons and when a button is activated by pressing on the screen. For example, if the function of a button is to switch on the light, Control Omni can be made to say "Lamp". A maximum of 10 seconds can be recorded for each button. A built in microphone or a microphone via headset can be used to record sound, see fig 13, page 13. Recording starts directly once you press "Start recording" and it ends when you press "Stop". You can listen to the recorded sound when the recording is finished, and re-record the sound if you are not satisfied. If no sound is heard, check that the sound is not switched off – see the section "Sound Volume for system sound” on Page 14.

placed Select this page Edit button Select the button on which the image is to

be placed Appearance Change image Select category Select image

Adding Your Own Images

It is also possible to use your own images in Control Omni. For this a PC is needed. The images to be used should be approximately 100 x 100 pixels, and they should be in PNG-format. Photos taken with a digital camera are far too large to be used, and cause Control Omni to work very slowly. This problem can be avoided by reducing the dimensions of the images, using an image processing program. One such program is the simple "Microsoft Office Picture Manager" that is part of Microsoft Office or Paint.net which can be downloaded from internet free of charge: When the image has been edited to an adequate size and format it is to be moved to Control Omni. 1. Remove the memory card from Control Omni by pressing

with the stylus. The memory card will now come out. 2. Insert the memory card in the memory card adapter, fig

20 (is enclosed). 3. Connect the adapter to the USB port on the computer.

The computer will now register the memory card as a movable disc. Note! The memory card adapter might be turned in wrongly when inserted in the USB port.

Transfer the image to the memory card. Path: Movable disc\AutoCopy\FlashDisk\Gewa\Omni\user\default\images\MY OWN PICTURES. 4. When the image has been added to the memory card,

remove the memory card adapter form the USB port.

Adding alert function “Alert” is used when you want to attract somebody’s attention. Control Omni can activate Alert in different ways:

Transmit an IR-signal which activates a relay in an IR-receiver. Transmit an RF-signal which activates a relay in a radio receiver. Send an SMS with the built-in telephone. Call a telephone number with the built-in telephone. Activate the built-in relay output.

When selecting function an IR-signal, an RF-signal, a telephone number or SMS is also set. Note! Several functions can be activated simultaneously.

Completed Pages The following completed pages are delivered with Control Omni. Select a completed page as required and add it using the Settings page. Once a page has been added, it is easy to add or remove functions. Many of the pages already have IR channels set up, for example, for controlling the GewaTel loudspeaker telephone. The GewaLink channels are shown in the pages. IR codes must be recorded from the original remote control unit in order to control other items, such as TV, DVD and CD. All GewaLink channels are used only once on these completed pages in order to avoid one channel controlling several functions. Many pages contain shortcuts for answering the telephone, answering a Duocom hall telephone and for opening the door. These short-cuts make it easy to operate these functions quickly.
