Steve Mann started out as a teacher at Select English

London in 1996. In 2005 he was promoted to the

Principal position and has been running Select English

London very successfully ever since. Steve is leading a

team of about six to ten teachers depending on the time

of the year. Steve very carefully selects all the academic

staff to ensure the highest quality of teaching and a

friendly atmosphere for all the students. He is very

approachable and always happy to help students with

any enquiry they might have.

Select English London is part of the Select English group with one

year-round school in London and another one in Cambridge plus

several summer centres in different parts of the UK. The Select English

group is owned and directed by Mervyn and Helena Martin and their

daughter Hanna Claydon. Mervyn and Helena founded Select English

Cambridge in 1992 and developed it into a very successful language

school, which is respected worldwide. In 2003, Mervyn and Helena

decided to expand the business and bought Angloschool in Crystal

Palace, which is now Select English London. Mervyn, Helena and

Hanna are based in Cambridge but regularly visit Select English

London to ensure the smooth and successful running of the school.

Prior to joining theschool, I both taught and studiedabroad for nearly 10 years, so I knowhow it feels to be far from home in aforeign country trying to learn a newlanguage.

I am lucky in the fact that I like my joband enjoy meeting our students.There’s a real sense of satisfaction inseeing them progress and go on tofulfil their ambitions to study atuniversity, find a new career or passthat examination they werepreparing for.

Select English, London is situated in CrystalPalace in the southeast of London. CrystalPalace is a charming and up-and-comingresidential area of London. There are plenty ofcafes, restaurants and pubs within easy reachof the school. It is also very green with plentyof trees and parks. Crystal Palace is thehighest point in south London and offersamazing views over the whole of London.

Crystal Palace takes its name from the famousbuilding that housed the ‘Great Exhibition’ in1851. A fire destroyed the Crystal Palace in1936, and today, near the site of the CrystalPalace, stands the National Sports Centrewhose extensive facilities attract sportsmenand women from all over the world.

ReceptionOur reception is open from Mondayto Friday between 08.30am and17.00pm. Our staff are veryapproachable and always available tohelp students with their enquiriesregarding tuition, accommodation,excursions or any other issues.

ClassroomsThe school has 12 bright and airyclassrooms all appropriatelyequipped for effective languageteaching.

Cafeteria and Garden The school has a lovely cafeterialocated in the school residence. It isopen from Monday to Friday from08.30am to 13.30pm. We serve avariety of hot and cold lunches anddrinks and snacks in all breaks. It isa great opportunity to socialise withother students and practise theEnglish learned in lessons. There iscomfortable indoor seating and alsoa beautiful garden for use in thegood weather.

Computers/InternetOur computer room, open duringschool opening hours, is equippedwith 12 computers all free to use andconnected to the Internet. Theschool also has free wireless Internetwhich students with their ownlaptops can connect to.

Facilities

I like studyinghere because the teachers make thelessons very interesting and it’s quitedifferent from what I had in RussianUniversity. Teachers here focus onspeaking; that is the main thing in thelanguage. I like my host family becausethey are always very kind to us. Iespecially love people here becausethey are quite different; all of them arevery friendly and sociable. I like beinghere and I hope that I’ll come backagain.

Select English owns a large andspacious Victorian house used asa school residence all year.

Location The residence is conveniently located twodoors from the main school building inCrystal Palace. It takes students less than aminute to reach the school from theresidence.

Minimum ageStudents need to be at least 18 to beaccommodated in the school residence.

Rooms The residence has 7 single and 2 twinrooms.

Showers and toilets6 rooms have en-suite showers. For the 3rooms without showers,communal showers arelocated on each floor. Thereare shared toilets on eachfloor.

Internet The residence has wirelessInternet throughout.Students who bring theirown laptop can access theInternet for free 24 hours aday.

TVAll rooms have new digital TVs.

Warden The Warden, who lives inthe residence, is available tohelp and assist studentsduring their stay.

Meals The residence is self-catering. However, theschool café is located in the residence and isopen for lunch to all students. Breakfast andDinner can be prepared by residentialstudents in the communal kitchen.

Communal facilities Communal facilities include a kitchen, alounge, a table tennis room and a largegarden.

LaundryBedding is washed once a week butstudents have to go to a local laundrette fortheir own laundry.

Smoking The residence is no-smoking throughout.

Our Students

Maurice WestMaurice studied English at Cambridge University. He also holds aDiploma in EFL teaching. Maurice has been a teacher of English atSelect English since 1977. He is particularly experienced atteaching our most advanced students.

Gareth ThomasGareth studied English and Philosophy at Middlesex University. Healso completed his CELTA teaching certificate. Gareth has been ateacher of English at Select English since 1977. He is veryexperienced at all levels.

Jeff BanksJeff studied Philosophy, English Literature and Linguistics at theUniversity of Lancaster. He also holds a Certificate in TEFLA.Jeff has been a teacher at Select English since 2003. He is veryexperienced at all levels. He also teaches special courses such asbusiness or military English.

Ben BettsBen studied Chemistry at the University of Manchester. He did hisCELTA teaching qualification in March 2009 and shortly afterstarted working for Select English. He is very popular with allstudents.

Susan Newell Sue studied French withSpanish at Durham University.After having worked at auctionhouses Bonham and Sotheby’sfor over ten years she got herTeaching Certificate in 2010 andhas been working for SelectEnglish ever since.

Teaching MethodologyOur teaching method is the communicativeapproach which means that the emphasis ison students practising English in differentsocial contexts through different teachingtechniques. For example students regularlywork in pairs or engage in role-play topractise what has been covered in thelessons. Classroom material and activitiesare often authentic and reflect real-lifesituations and demands. Skills areintegrated from the beginning; any givenactivity might involve reading, speaking,listening and perhaps also writing.

Maximum Class SizeThe maximum class size is 14.

Learning Material All learning material is provided. Teachersusually work with a variety of course booksand other teaching material such asnewspapers, DVDs and songs, etc.Teachers also use the computer room or aninteractive whiteboard for lessons.

Certificate and CourseReportsAll students that have attended at least 80per cent of lessons are given a certificate atthe end of their course. We can also providecourse/progress reports on request.

General English courses -16+

General English Our general English courses run all year.Students can start any Monday from Januaryto December. The school only closes onofficial bank holidays. Students can studyfrom a minimum of two weeks, up to a long-term course of four, six or even more months.We offer a choice of 15 or 25 hours ofGeneral English per week. The 15-hourcourse offers grammar-based lessons linkedto a variety of topics. Speaking, listening,reading and writing skills are also integratedinto the teaching. The 25-hour course, inaddition to what the 15-hour course covers,offers further skills-based lessons in theafternoon to give students the opportunity forextra practice.

LevelsAll students are given a level test on their firstMonday and will be placed at the appropriatelevel. We offer six levels from A2 – C2(elementary - advanced plus). Please notethat we do not offer group classes for A1(beginners). Beginners can take one-to-onelessons until they reach the right level to joinour elementary group.

Syllabus All levels have an on-going eight-weeksyllabus with an attainment test at the end,after which students then move up a level, ifthey have passed the test.

We are very experienced atorganising and accommodating groupcourses. Select English London’slocation is ideal for either homestay orhotel accommodation. All homestayfamilies are close together and closeto the school, whilst the Queens hotelis less than 5 minutes from the school(see page 7). Group courses aretailor-made and can include onlyEnglish tuition or tuition plus socialactivities or specific project work.

We offer one-to-one tuition all yearround. One-to-one courses aretailor-made for you. Students getthe closest possible attention fromtheir own teacher. Exam PreparationCourses

Christmas CourseDates Select English London is one of the few schoolsthat is open at Christmas. We only close onofficial Bank Holidays. It is a great opportunity toexperience an English Christmas and alsoLondon in this very special festive season. Our

Christmas course runs for three weeks,however, students are welcome to starttheir course earlier or stay longer in theNew Year.

Programme We organise a trip to Oxford Street so thatstudents can experience the world famousChristmas lights. We also organise aChristmas party with Santa Clauspresenting the students with a smallpresent. On Christmas Day and BoxingDay, students celebrate in their hostfamilies. On New Year’s Eve students havethe opportunity to visit central London andsee the spectacular fireworks display.

IELTS IELTS (International English Language TestingSystem) is a highly practical and valid Englishlanguage assessment, primarily used by thoseseeking international education or professionalrecognition. It has become the most widelyrecognised international measure of English abilityfor university entrants.

DatesWe offer two different starting dates for a four-week IELTS preparation course. Please seeregistration form for more details.Tuition The IELTS preparation course is a combinationof 10 hours IELTS preparation and 15 hoursGeneral English per week.LevelStudents must be at least (B2) upper-intermediate level (according to our placementtest) to join the IELTS preparation course.Examination The IELTS test can be booked through SelectEnglish (extra costs apply) and is available at anearby IELTS test centre most Saturdays.

FCE and CAE CambridgeExam Preparation CoursesSelect English London has been aCambridge examination centre since the 1960s.Cambridge exams are the world’s leading range ofcertificates for learners of English and they arerecognised by thousands of educationalorganisations and employers throughout the world.

DatesWe offer exam preparation courses for FCE and CAEexams in March, June and December. The exampreparation courses start up to 9 weeks prior to theexams. Please see registration form for more details.Tuition The FCE and CAE preparation courses are a combinationof 10 hours FCE or CAE preparation and 15 hoursGeneral English per week.LevelFor the FCE exam preparation course, students have tobe at least upper-intermediate level and for the CAE exampreparation course, students have to be at leastadvanced level (according to our placement test).Examination The examination can be taken at our school as part ofthe course, but it is not compulsory. Trinity Select English London is also a test centre forTrinity exams. Trinity certificates are recognised bycolleges, universities and employers worldwide.Trinity offers three different exams: GradedExamination in Spoken English (GESE), IntegratedSkills in English (ISE) and Spoken English for Work(SEW). Trinity preparation courses and exams canbe organised upon request.

This programme is ideal for students andyoung professionals who want to improvetheir English in a working environmentand gain practical knowledge of a certainUK business sector (minimum age 18).

For Select English to arrange the workplacement it would have to be precededby at least a four-week English course.The candidates’ English level should be astrong B1 level (IELTS 5.5) at thecommencement of the placement. Theinternship can be from four weeks to sixmonths.
